Charlie Rangel Wins New York Primary …(Democrats Love Their Crooks!)

Democrats love their crooks.

Censured Democrat Charles Rangel won his primary tonight in New York.
The New York Times reported:

Surviving one of the toughest re-election fights of his career, Representative Charles B. Rangel fended off four challengers on Tuesday to win the Democratic nomination for a 22nd term in Congress.

“I’m just glad that my community has faith and confidence in me,” Mr. Rangel told reporters shortly before declaring victory at Sylvia’s, the famed Harlem restaurant.

Mr. Rangel’s victory capped a gripping campaign for a Congressional seat that for decades has been at the center of black political power — and preserved a career in Washington that had been threatened by ethics troubles and changing demographics.

Mr. Rangel was censured in 2010 after the House Ethics Committee found him guilty of 11 counts of ethical violations, including failure to pay taxes, improper solicitation of donations and failure to report his personal income accurately.

Rangel was censured on the House floor in 2010.

Tonight he won his Democrat primary.

Rangel has strengths of his own, though. Interestingly, despite the redistricted seat’s new majority-Hispanic status, it also has over 24,500 more African-American residents than the old version of the district. And Rangel’s four-decade career in Congress has engendered abiding loyalty among many blacks and a large swath of Democratic voters in the area. Even though Rangel only won 51 percent in the 2010 primary, he actually won more primary votes (over 26,000) than all but one House candidate in the entire state.

Obama Cites Tax Dodger Marc Anthony to Push Higher Taxes

Tuesday, President Obama attacked Mitt Romney and Republican lawmakers for opposing increased taxes on the rich. The President referred to himself and singer Marc Anthony, who performed at the event, as examples of those individuals who would ideally pay more under his plan:{..}

In 2007, the crooner paid $2.5 million in back taxes to federal and state goverments for failing to file returns on nearly $15.5 million in income over a five-year period.

This report was from 2010. The current status of Mr. Anthony’s tax filings is unknown.
