Obama arrives at his taxpayer funded campaign speech at the University of Iowa on Wednesday where he smeared Missouri conservative Rep. Todd Akin. (AP)
On Wednesday at a campaign stop at the University of Iowa, President Obama mischaracterized and ridiculed Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) who is running for US Senate in Missouri. Obama’s attack came in response to a statement Akin made when asked about government funding of student loans at a debate last weekend.
Here is what Rep. Todd Akin said about the current administration during the debate:
“America has got the equivalent of the stage three cancer of socialism, because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no business tampering in. So first, to answer your question precisely, what the democrats did to get rid of the private student loans and take it all over by the government was wrong, it was a lousy bill, that’s why I voted ‘no’.”
The President responded by smearing Todd in front of students and supporters:
“You’ve got one member of Congress who compared these student loans – I’m not kidding here – to a ‘stage-three cancer of socialism.’ Stage three cancer?… Come on. Just when you think you’ve heard it all in Washington, somebody comes up with a new way to go off the deep end.”
in response to the President’s remarks, Todd said,
“The President’s attack mischaracterizes my comments. The cancer infecting our society today is not student loans themselves, but the massive expansion of federal government into every sector of private business. From Obamacare to the failed stimulus, and from Freddie and Fannie to student loans, this administration has consistently trampled private business and our personal freedoms to expand the power of the federal government.
“The President’s comments today show the deep divide between our philosophies of government – mine of states’ rights and free markets and his of socialistic government expansion.
Any Republican who is not afraid to use the word “socialism” in reference to Barack Obama’s policies gets a gold star in my book.
UPDATE: I spoke with Rep. Todd Akin on Thursday night and here is his response to this smear by President Obama.
“He’s good at personal attacks but bad at attacking problems. He uses the same solution on every problem – that is more government and more and more and more debt. Obamacare has taken over one-sixth of the economy and the government has pushed private lenders out of student loans. Now they’re creating the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac of student loans. And as the government takes it over, more and more debt is created. The reason Obama is upset about use of the word socialism is because his administration is asserting the government into what was once private sector areas. The reason Obama is attacking me is that I don’t have the same faith in big government as he does.”
