Rick Santorum: “I Don’t Want To Make Black People’s Lives Better By Giving Them Someone Else’s Money” (Video)

Good grief.
At a campaign stop in Sioux City, Iowa on Sunday, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum singled out blacks as being recipients of assistance through federal benefit programs, telling a mostly-white audience he doesn’t want to “make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money.”
CBS reported, via Pat Dollard:

Rick Santorum:
“It just keeps expanding – I was in Indianola a few months ago and I was talking to someone who works in the department of public welfare here, and she told me that the state of Iowa is going to get fined if they don’t sign up more people under the Medicaid program. They’re just pushing harder and harder to get more and more of you dependent upon them so they can get your vote. That’s what the bottom line is. I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.”

  • regularguy

Having listened to the segment on video, what in hell is the matter with what Santorum said? The American people have allowed the destruction of blacks, whites, hispanics and others on the public dole for decades under the guise of compassion, and Santorum is supposed to, by political correctness defined by said destroyers, parse his words like everyone else and not speak this truth? Good grief, what he said needs to be shouted from the rooftops. The time for destroying the dignity of people on behalf of political expediency and votes has long since PASSED.

Furry, I agree. That shouldn’t stop ANY CONSERVATIVE from telling the truth. Here is why.

YOU and even I, realize that the MSM is going to lie, cheat and steal to win for the Kenyan Dimwit. We have to hit, hit hard, hit again, kick scratch and claw. And we START by backing the TRUTH. I like Santorum, and I realize that he is not going to win ,but for the love of Gawd, we need to take the fight to THEM.

Maybe, but I suspect that this will be used by the MSM to mainly smear him, especially if he begins to gain even more traction. Unfortunately though, this is an unforced error on his part. Why mention one single ethnic group when the problem encompasses more than just one?

I can hear Al Sharpten now. And Rick is right. Why would anyone think that keeping Blacks on government benefits be making “Blacks lives better”, and the “better” part is where the problem lies because their lives aren’t being made “better”. They are enslaved by Socialist Democrat social and domestic spending programs and none of those were designed to make anyone’s lives better. Better than what? Having a good paying job, with raises and promotions? Getting a college deploma and starting out somewhere at $60,000 a year is worse than being on benefits? Damn, where do I sign up for these benefits? I know that the Negro’s in my town are doing damn good, and if Al Sharpten says anything about “po'” Blacks, I want him to come to my town and take a look at how our Blacks live. They’re driving cars and SUV’s that most working White folks can’t afford, their kids are wearing $300.00 worth of sport clothes on, the mother(since they don’t have a father, just baby daddies) is wearing $500.00 worth of clothes and jewellery and shoes, and go into WalMart and buy $300.00 worth of meat White people can’t afford plus a bunch of other stuff and pay cash for it all, except the food of course and for that they are using a Food Stamp card.

I don’t know, but whose paying for what here?

  • dave in dallas

It’s a fact that blacks have been hammered by Obama’s policies. I thought it was appropriate for Santorum to use that particular demographic to highlight the failure of “hope and change.” sure, the MSM will twist what he said, but in the end, I don’t think it will sway voters one way or another. Forget the so-called “undecideds,” if those folks actually exist. You either want Obama or you don’t.

  • Ipso Facto

Santorium is COMPLETELY correct. The Democratic Party has decimated the black community with the “crack” of welfare money they have been giving them for decades now. It’s nothing more then a con that gives people immediate gratification, but they pay for it with the sad loss of their life potential down the road.

Look at all of the able-bodied people on welfare. Does anyone see them developing the values that have propelled the Jewish people or the Asian people into successful careers? I don’t. Just look at the numbers for high school graduation and college board scores and incarceration. The black people have been going down hill for decades and it is completely attributable to the Democratic Party which would rather have black and other disadvantaged kids grow up to be street urchins than doctors or engineers.

They give them the “crack” of “assistance” and they NEVER realize their fullest potential, in life because of it. Instead, they just vote for the Democrats who give them more money and the cycle goes on.

There is a reason why Sanitarium was at 5% until the spooked government media complex got worried about a rising Paul victory failing their plans in Iowa. Rick has been inflated faster than an emergency spare tire to drag votes away from Paul . Its all hype. There are no actual polls that show Rick close . They are just playing a head game …If they say Rick is within striking distance hard enough, enough fools will believe it , bolt from Paul, and clear the win for Romney. Pay Sanitarium any attention and he will shortly remind you why he was at 5%. Rick will focus the conversation on dead babbies within minutes , say something offensive to gays , and say something offensive to minorities. A Sanitarium Presidancy would dwell obsessively on abortion politics every day blocking movement on the whole agenda, squandering the conservative victory .

In which Gateway Pundit race-baits Rick Santorum just because Obama is black. If you read Tommy Christopher over at Mediaite, he has the real transcript. Santorum said, “I don’t want to make -bhaugh- people’s lives better by giving them someone else’s money.”

That being said, Santorum does sound kind of disingenuous saying he doesn’t want to make people’s lives better by giving them someone else’s money. While in Congress, he was one of the leading earmarkers and even bragged about it on Hannity, so he has a track record of trying to make people’s lives better by giving them other people’s money.

He at first thought that Santorum said “white people” but then we both thought that he stumbled, saying “live/people’s lives.” In fact the cbs article reports that he makes a similar stumble in response to questioning: ””Let me just say that no matter what, I want to make every lives [sic] better – I don’t want anybody – and if you look at what I’ve been saying, I’ve been pretty clear about my concern for dependency in this country and concern for people not being more dependent on our government, whatever their race or ethnicity is.”‘

This is a sign of the dumbest political offerings.

Santorum foolishly offers some ugly racist snipe, which only weakens the effort to bring sanity back to this Country – and focus on removing the Democratic Party.

The fashion which hyped Trump, Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Gingrich (the worst of all), now desperately rushing to Santorum, etc., continues to provide a dreadfully weak – self destructive offering.

It is almost as if some want to enable the Democratic Party further.

Santorum would lose dramatically in any National Election. Ironically, he has no executive experience, no proven private sector ability, no economic credentials, etc., even lacks political influence in PA – his home state. Rick is simply a terrible candidate for the Presidency.

Again, it is so vividly clear Mr. Romney is the best offering by far. The recent Rasmussen poll, clearly indicating his lead over Obama by some 6%, is making Democratic Partisans terribly nervous. Gingrich, Santorum, etc., are losing to Obama by a whopping 10% in the same poll data.

Ann Coulter, Gov. Haley, Sheriff Babeu, Sen. Thune, Gov. Christie, Jack Welch, etc., are right, Mitt Romney is the best offering for the job.

Tell the fricking truth and let is sound all across the land?? This country is drowning in debt from decades of payments in the trillions to “help” blacks. They just keep doing worse, behaving worse, and demanding more.

You people whining about this are a bunch of dumb-ass, weak-kneed suckers and deserve to get fleeced and flash-robbed into oblivion.

Those people have an average IQ of about 80, live in the moment, have never succeeded anywhere on the planet in any society, including all-black societies, run every municipal government they’ve been given to manage straight into the gutter and/or bankruptcy, and would not be able to survive more than a couple years, if that, without white people’s “help” forced from us through legislated guilt payments.

What a bunch of gutless wonders.

  • [email protected]

Ipso Fact @ 42, I usually agree with you. But let’s get real. WHAT potential? The truth is that, as a group living in any country on the planet, blacks are an EPIC failure. They’re all about instant gratification and self-preservation through someone else’s loss or suffering and attacking the weak. They cannot produce or behave in a civilized manner. They cannot plan. They cannot build. They cannot invent. They cannot engineer. They cannot learn. They cannot associate today’s actions with a pay-off tomorrow. They cannot live or think beyond the moment they are in. Yeah, yeah, you get your disclaimer “It’s not all blacks” Right. I’m only talking about 90% of them. The other 10% are fine. Left to their own devices, 90% haven’t progressed beyond mud huts, bad ju-ju and spears even to a written language in thousands of years.

We are politically-coerced idiots for supporting the abject lunacy of the myth that blacks are the same as whites and other races and are just as capable. They are not, and have never demonstrated anywhere on earth that they are.

Truth is, black people are still racially profiled. We get educated and apply for what white people think are “white jobs” we’re deemed “not as smart” as you or if we do get the job we got it because of “the government” to keep you from being racial bigots, we’re never promoted to higher position OR if we do fall through the cracks, we don’t know our place and we’re trying to take over.

  • RedBeard

I’ve listened to the quoted phrase 6 times, and it sounds as if Santorum did, in fact, step on his own tongue and bring race into the discussion. Not a very wise thing to say at a campaign stop, no matter how much truth there is in it.

  • daryl

    Hint to the wise.

This is unbelievable. People are posting that he didn’t say “black”, then in the next breath, they are saying even if he did say it, it’s true!

Best example of doublespeak I’ve ever heard. Hello 1984.

  • daryl

I’ll say one thing for #80 the penumbraic racist who hates poor whites cutting in on the freebie welfare game. He/she likes his/her sources aged. That link takes you to an article 1991 Time Magazine article.
    How now brown bovine?

  • Shadeaux

I’ll say this to #84, ALSO KNOW AS DARYL. It was the truth then and it’s the truth now. It was also quoted on FOX NEWS which I am sure is the only place your get your news. Another truth is, if your race is the dominate race using govn’t help then it is YOU who is mad about other races cutting in on the freebies. Funny how that was the only thing you commented on. I’m far from racist but you need to look in the mirror. “How now” your damnself.

  • RedBeard

Shadeaux very correctly stated: “The fact is he should have said “PEOPLE” instead of singling out one race. He’s a politician and singling out one race is WRONG.”

On the other hand, Shadeaux incorrectly used statistics. Of course whites use more welfare than blacks in total dollars. But it helps no one to fail to take into account the fact that blacks are only 12% of the population and use a disproportionally much higher per capita amount of welfare. This is simply a fact, not a pejorative.

And finally, Shadeaux correctly points out the sad fact that racism against blacks still exists, even though it has abated dramatically. But Shadeaux’s anger is self-defeating in the struggle to, as he puts it, “consider us all citizens and say ‘people’ in lieu of ‘blacks.'” My personal goal is just that, to have us all be Americans, without hyphens. For that to happen, everyone needs to adopt that attitude, including government stopping the pigeonholing of us by race.

  • Shadeaux

Thanks RedBeard! Your comment that ” … whites use more welfare than blacks in total dollars…” is precisely my point. It seems like WE (Blacks) are being blamed for this whole economic down fall. Even though I know that not to be true, it does feel like we are always singled out.

I am guilty of coming across as angry, and I don’t want anyone to think I have anything against white people at all. I LOVE MY WHITE PEOPLE… It just really hurts bad that most of them hate us so much… even those who are working and trying very hard. And to those who are not as mean spirited as others, I would like to THANK YOU very much!

  • ej

If you thought he said “black” people you are simply nuts. He was talking about the PEOPLE IN THE ROOM being dependent on government…did you happen to see the people in the room??? They were white. Cmon you might not want to vote for him but don’t lie about what he said and it’s very obvious what he meant.

  • Texmom

He began by addressing the people in attendance and his overall point was that we all need jobs and opportunity now, not expanding government hand outs which are unsustainable and make people dependent. This is racist, crazy talk? Sounds like common sense.

  • RedBeard

Shadeaux, I really have to argue a point here, the one where you stated that most whites hate you. I simply cannot believe that’s true. At least in my circle of friends and family, I can’t think of anyone who speaks hatefully about others based upon ethicity or race.

Oh, believe me, I hear such idiocy spouted out there in the real world, and don’t deny it exists. But just as you would have white people give you the benefit of the doubt, I would ask you to do the same, and not assume that most whites hate you. The ones who do are a tiny sliver of the population, and only deserving of being ignored as the irrelevant people they are.

  • Dwayne

Santorum is an idiot. About 85 percent of the people on welfare in Iowa are WHITE! WTF is he talking about?

  • RedBeard

Texmom, I’m sure that was his actual intent, but he ruined a great opportunity by bringing race into the subject. It’s not about race; it’s about government dependency, no matter who is on the receiving end.

EJ, after reading your post, I went back and listened to the clip again. It still sounds clear that Santorum said “black people.” What he meant was somewhat different, and I believe his point was about welfare in general, but we’re talking about his actual words. Foot in mouth.

  • Ann Marie

He said black people and he only stumbled because he realized what he’d said. Uhhmmm….people clapped- very disturbing.

Nope Redbeard…he did not say black people…he stumbled on his words and the fact that the first part of his statement specifically addressed those in the room as “you” and the rest of his statement was still in that context. Seems to me he wanted to say something like “give back peoples lives” from being on the government dole or something to that effect. Cut the racist crap and lets get on with the real issues.

  • Objective Analysis

As a Black American, I don’t want you to steal someone’s money and give it to me, I WANT TO EARN MY MONEY. It is the very definition of hardwork, self-determination and FREEDOM.

  • Amjean

Get your hearing checked folks! He did not say “black”. He stumbled over the word
    “lives”.

He said black people and he only stumbled because he realized what he’d said. Uhhmmm….people clapped- very disturbing.
    Uhhmmmm…NO HE DIDN’T.
Geez people even that far Leftie Loon Tommy Christopher at Mediaite admits that CBS, using NPR as a source, was wrong. Santorum did not say Black and he kept saying “you” to a room full of White people. I’m not a Santorum supporter but this is a sad attempt to smear someone.

  • RedBeard

What does Santorum say about this? Has he commented yet?

Do you know how to kill a “welfare recipient?

Hide their food stamps under their work boots.

So, are we inserting racism ahead of time to save the progressives from having to do it later? Just trying to beat them to the punch, I guess? Not sure that’s a winning strategy:)

Rick is a truth speaker. That is whats shocking everyone right now.

Thanks Deanna…I can’t stand when people jump on something without first really listening to what was really said. We will never get out of this mess if people on our own side cut our own people down. I AM a Santorum supporter, but would be happy with any of our nominees except for Ron Paul. He gets votes from the youth who say “dump the fed” just to use it as a smokescreen because what they reallty want is legalized pot; that’s no way to vote for a president.

I’m a conservative and Santorum was a true conservative long before it was cool. He won in PA as a conservative and lost his last election because of his support Arlen Specter who he supported because he was assured two conservative supreme court judges would be appointed to the bench. This indeed happened and we now have Alito and Roberts on the bench. So Santorum took a principled stand and lost in a terrible election year for republicans overall. Nobody’s perfect but at least Santorum stands by his priciples.

Iowa has less thean 6% unemployment and #5 rated economy in the U.S. I’d like to see that 6% broken down into ethnic groups, because I’m sure ole Rick did when he was at that office talking about those numbers and that’s what he’s saying. Simple fact. To say otherwise would be misleading and an out right lie to America.

  • http://Ughnot9-9-9again Brian

Watched the video, heard the quote. It’s not difficult to hear “black” in there. Yeah it’s a really stupid gaffe, possibly even a freudian slip. Regardless I tend to still support him more than the other repub candidates although I’ll vote for any of them (except perhaps ron paul) in a general election. It’s pretty hard to come up with another Ronald Reagan.

  • zooomzooom

when the comment is put in context, even Bill Cosby would agree with him.

    Have a nice day.

I would submit that evidence that black people have EVERY bit as much potential as any other race on the planet is self evident. Look at Jazz music. Jazz is a total creation of black people at a very difficult time for their community. This illustrates that adversity is much more conducive to success than affluence. There is so much genius in Jazz music I cannot begin to delineate it here. Likewise, look at the black people who have achieved incredible success in the entertainment industry and in professional sports. Both of these fields are pure meritocracies.

The black people who have achieved great success in sports and entertainment have exhibited that black people do indeed have the very essence of excellence in their genes. The black people in sports worked VERY hard, postponed gratification and focused on success and they didn’t stop working for it until they attained it. The same thing goes for the black people in the entertainment industry. So, give them their due.

The elements of success are the same for every single discipline on the planet – if the blacks can attain great success in anything, they can attain success in everything.

The problem for the black community is that due to the “assistance” that has been given to them, large numbers of their community have been robbed of their pride and motivation to succeed. We can see throughout history that any downtrodden people do much better off with adversity than affluence.

When the Democrats give “assistance” to the blacks, they systematically destroy the fabric of their community. The black people would be perfectly capable (and much better off) if they took care of themselves instead of buying the victim mentality. I also believe the culture of failure that exists in the black community is not indigenous. That culture of failure is an artifact of the “assistance money”. Left to their own devices, the black community would look at the people that have achieved success and they would duplicate those efforts in other fields by adopting the values of the blacks that have achieved success. But no, the Democrats do not want that. If the black people emancipated themselves from the Democratic Plantation, they would stop being Democrats.

Thus, it is the Democratic “crack” of entitlement money that has decimated the black community. Did the Jewish people seek “assistance” after they were nearly annihilated in Europe – I don’t think so. Has anyone ever seen the boat people from Vietnam ever seek “assistance money”? I don’t think so. How about the Asians? Again – no. The only other groups that have gotten on the “assistance” band wagon are the Hispanics and the native Americans. In both cases we can clearly see large numbers of people in those communities failing to develop to their fullest potential in life.

It’s counter-intuitive, but when you “help” people by doing things that relieve them from being responsible for their own lives, they inevitably falter and fail. And this also breeds resentment which we can see in black racism all over America today.

    Wow

  • Perry

The issue here isn’t what Rick said. The issue is how he presented this idea that black people on welfare in Iowa is the problem. Do you know how many black people are in Iowa? Less than 3.0%. Do you know how many Norwegians are in Iowa? Twice that. Not to mention, a vast number of black people is Iowa are college students, and will eventually leave. Norwegians are looking for help from the gov’t too. Twice as many. How come they weren’t singled out? What about farmers who were forced out of business because the gov’t would only subsidize corn? They ALL need help, yet they weren’t singled out either. His tactic is to divide, and his tactic should insult your intellect.

This is classic example of, “Blame the guy who’s not in the room”. It’s cowardly, and intentionally racist.

To all those who continue to trumpet this, “It’s the liberal media skewing everything” approach…are you daft. Poor people, black and white are getting sh*t on everyday be these greedy, “do whatever it takes to get in office”, politicians. They aren’t here to help you because you’re white, and they identify with you. They are going to screw you out of your pensions, medical benefits. social security, etc…as soon they deem it necessary. Wake up.

I wonder if Jim Hoft believes the insane lies he repeats?

Taking half of the words someone says and making a story out of it is a fraud.

Does this blog think it can survive by promoting lies?

  • Black Shadeaux

Hey Shadeaux. Blacks average $3230. per capita in welfare expenditures at the last census.
Whites??? Oh dear, only $1022 per capita. Oh dear oh dear. You see Shadeaux, you are not very bright. Blacks are 3 times more likely to recieve welfare payments than whites.
Would you like to know about the illegitimacy out of wedlock birth rates of blacks versus whites??
You want to talk race? Let’s have that chat you pathetic windbag??

“Your” people are 3 times more likely to recieve welfare. Thanks for playing.

  • Black Shadeaux

That was deep Perry. Are you retarded or just slow?? Who is supporting dead beats, who is regulating and taxing businesses until they leave or close??

Perry, dimwits like you are a dime a dozen.

  • AW08

“Blacks are 3 times more likely to recieve welfare payments than whites.”

However, the money that comes out of your paycheck for welfare payments is more likely to go to a White person/family than a Black one. That is the point. And Perry, ignore the idiots. Your post was refreshing.

It seemed like I was in a KKK rally in here at one point….read some of these posts and maybe you can understand WHY Blacks think most Whites are racist. My God, what is the matter with you people? Blacks can’t learn? Blacks can’t invent or “act civilized”? REALLY? In 2012, THAT is acceptable to post…and a whopping TWO people speak out against that type of trash? I have heard many Blacks talk about racism, and have been guilty of thinking they are exaggerating or “playing the race card”, but after reading this filth that you trolls are so gleefully posting makes me see that THESE are the racists they are talking about! They probably have to deal with morons like this everyday…I thought that this type of ugliness died along with the Jim Crow laws of yesteryear…clearly it has not.

God help us and you bigots should be ashamed.

    Population 191…87%white, 0.09%black

  • nora

A lot of your comments are rude and utterly ignorant. Do some checking before your rants. He was talking to someone at the department of public welfare in Indianola population 191…, 87%white, 0.09%black. You dont need a whole department with that few blacks. Don’t let your world be run by lies, yes the truth hurts. If you learn it, you’ll become a better citizen.

i’ve been reading this blog since the last election, and this post and your general inclination to bash Santorum with no good reason has annoyed me enough to call it quits here.
here’s something i’ve wanted to tell you for four years
    SPELL CHECK

  • Jim from Easton

Shouldn’t he have said, “I Don’t Want to Make Black People’s Lives WORSE By Giving Them Someone Else’s Money”?
Because that’s what has actually happened. That’s what’s happened to all people who have gotten caught up in the dependency cycle, whether they are black, white or something else.

  • LC

Here are the FACTS: In the state of Iowa, 84 percent of the people on food stamps are white and only 9 percent are black. In the United States, 70 percent of Food Stamp/welfare recipients are white, and 4 percent are black. Seems as though blacks are not necessarily the ones who need to “get off the dole.”

  • Love for allpeople

I am glad someone focused on the facts! Yes, there are more Whites on welfare and sucking off of goverment’s pacifier than any other race of people in this country. It’s so sad that Santorum is cursed with a generation curse from his forefathers of hate for the “African Americans” people. May God have mercy on this country!

  • BigBlackDude

Absolutely amazing! Just read the stats for true the recipients of public assistance.

  • 30-something Black Chick

Not all black people are lazy, ill-mannered or recipients of assistance. furthermore, not all black women have many children by multiple “baby daddies”. I.m a single industrious 30-something black woman with no children and I find these remarks and generalizations deeply offensive and hurtful.

The road to self-sufficiency is so much more complicated than just “getting off welfare”. It’s a feel-good politically savvy phrase that ignites people on both sides of the debate; self-sufficiency is, indeed, a lofty goal and a bi-partisan issue. However, punitive policies, for instance, like not allowing those with certain drug-related criminal convictions to recieve Federal aid TO get an education or bettter themselves or not hiring someone with a criminal record even make it difficult to turn ones life around, even if they wanted to. Know all the facts before judging or making broad characterizations about races of people and their economic situations. “Getting off welfare for a person of any race is not as easy as it sounds.
