Newt Ginrich’s former wife told ABC that the former Speaker lacked moral character to be president. Marianne Gingrich also said Newt wanted an open marriage.

ABC reported:

Newt Gingrich lacks the moral character to serve as President, his second ex-wife Marianne told ABC News, saying his campaign positions on the sanctity of marriage and the importance of family values do not square with what she saw during their 18 years of marriage.

In her first television interview since the 1999 divorce, to be broadcast tonight on Nightline, Marianne Gingrich, a self-described conservative Republican, said she is coming forward now so voters can know what she knows about Gingrich.

In her most provocative comments, the ex-Mrs. Gingrich said Newt sought an “open marriage” arrangement so he could have a mistress and a wife.

She said when Gingrich admitted to a six-year affair with a Congressional aide, he asked her if she would share him with the other woman, Callista, who is now married to Gingrich.

“And I just stared at him and he said, ‘Callista doesn’t care what I do,’” Marianne Gingrich told ABC News. “He wanted an open marriage and I refused.”

The Washington Post is also ready to pounce on Newt.

  1. I wouldn’t care if he did have an open marriage.

I don’t want to marry him; I want him to run the country.

ANYTHING is better than the America-hating Kenyan.

  2. Well, yes, that’s Newt. DC already knows, but nobody wanted that cat to get out of that bag . . .

The presidency is also about the First Lady.

    No Newt. No Callista.

Two candidates have moral character: Romney and Santorum.

Besides, Newt has wanted to be president since he was an adolescent. Married his high school teacher, 10 years his senior, then another to help take him to the presidency, then another 26 years younger than himself–for all the wrong reasons.

  3. What agenda do ex-wives have? Jane Wyman was a lady about Ronald Reagan, said nothing.
My first ex-wife is on her 5th husband, does that make me a bad guy? Let’s give Newt some time to counter allegations about Marianne. We gave Bill Clinton time to define what IS,’IS’.

  4. And Rachelle, NO. You are completely wrong. “ANYTHING” is NOT better than Obama. Newt probably would be somewhat better, but he is mercurial and immoral.

  5. Remember when there was just ONE allegation against Cain?

  6. If America doesn’t care anymore about the moral fiber of their leaders, then we are no longer that “shining city.”

  7. Cain was having an affair–cheating on his wife for many years. What a tragedy.

  8. Blah, blah, blah ….

More smear tactics to cloud the real issues. I’d vote for ANY of our candidates before I voted for a man like Obama ….

  16. Neo-conned, if you think Ron Paul is ever going to President, you are delusional. He may get nominated by some crazy circumstances or something, but he will NEVER be president. That’s not an opinion it’s a fact.

  17. Sorry, the litany of politicians affairs has become meaningless. I. Don’t. Care. All I know is I’m going to vote to remove Whatshisname from office.

  18. I don’t want him running the country. I don’t want him handling my tax dollars. I don’t want him near or influencing my children. Yucky, yucky, yucky. Now it’s time for Callista to speak up. As it stands, the woman has no dignity whatsoever.

    Newt-Goldwater 1976

[Long before there was a mighty Republican machine running Georgia,
there was a handful of brash conservatives plotting to lift their tiny,
financially struggling party so they could end more than a century of
    Democratic dominance.

Among the chief architects was Newt Gingrich, a West Georgia College
assistant professor who ran for Congress three times in a blue-collar
district – twice against an entrenched Talmadge Democratic incumbent
    - before finally winning.

Gingrich, now a presidential hopeful, traveled West and North Georgia
during the 1970s and ’80s, preaching the Republican gospel and arguing
that the GOP had to choose between remaining a silent, permanent
minority or aggressively taking the fight to Democrats.

He chose confrontation and played the role of
provocateur, unwilling to accept second place….

U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Savannah, calls Gingrich an “indispensable early
trailblazer” for Georgia Republicans. Kingston remembers his college days,
when Gingrich came to the University of Georgia to recruit students to
    get involved in GOP politics.

  25. Cheater In Chief – Vote Newt 2012

  26. Mama Grizzly, I understand that moral character is an important issue. However, when you’re talking about people in government and positions of power, many marriages are made for reasons other than love. It’s always been that way, and it always will. Expecting to find the “perfect” candidate … a skilled leader who’s free of character flaws and has a flawless personal life, is simply not rational. In fact, I defy you to show me ANYONE who is without personal faults and character flaws. As long as they’re out in the open, and can’t be used to compromise the country’s security, I see no real problem with them.

Of course, I wouldn’t tolerate a criminal record, or a history of corruption in a Presidential candidate, nor would I tolerate the kind of nation-embarrassing shenanigans that Clinton had going on in the Oval Office, but the pre-electoral private lives of our candidates shouldn’t really be a factor when we assess their ability to lead this country and run our government. If we insist on making peoples’ less than perfect private lives a disqualifying factor, we eliminate almost every human being from the pool of viable candidates for public office …

  27. “Ron Paul … is the polar opposite of Obama on every issue.”

Uh, no. Both of them believe that when terrorists or other governments do bad things, it’s our fault. Both of them bend over backward to excuse or ignore the centuries-long jihadi war against the infidels.

  28. bg, why do you say this country needs to grow up? Do you mean that we should be willing to throw out every Christian conservative value we have and just sucumb to being what the left has been pushing on us for over 100 years?

    Vote No Values Newt.

  29. #15 exactly.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVWHiCjVSDY

  33. If Newt Gingrich gets the Republican nomination, that will be the end of the “bimbo eruptions,” and we’ll be able to talk about policy.

  34. Newt’s ex is a bitter old prune. She misses the limelight and the money. Now she will get
her 15 minutes of fame. 50% of marriages end in divorce, with one spouse or the other
cheating. It is a fact of life. Those of you who are making this old news a major campaign
issue get over yourselves. You are not anyone’s moral compass.

  35. bg, cheating on your wife is in no way being honest with her. If he didn’t love her anymore, fine, I can understand that. But to lie, sneak around and cheat before he even left her shows that he has all the morals of an alley cat who is willing to lie down with the first in-heat female that comes his way.

Where was Newt’s honesty? Why didn’t he at least give her, and himself, the respect of filing for a divorce before he started chasing another skirt? How is Newt Gingrich any different than Bill Clinton? He’s not, its just that Newt didn’t do it in the Oval Office.

  36. retire 05 — As usual I agree with you. A Newt Presidency would be about him and not about the American people. No more street fighters with big mouths. America’s problems cannot afford to be ignored for another 4 years.

  37. #35, Amjean, ever been cheated on? Ever had to experience what it is like to be told, after 18 years, that you are not good enough anymore and that your spouse has found someone he/she thinks is better than you? Ever had your self respect and honor so totally destroyed?

I hope some day you understand what it feels like. Then you will not be so quick to slander those that have.

  38. I hope this finally puts a knife in his candidacy. I know quite a few folks like him, but I will never get over his idiotic endorsement of DeDe what’s her name in NY in 2010. That and his ambush of Ryan and commercial with the troll Nancy. With those accomplishments, how could anyone support that fool?

  39. In the spring of 1980, Gingrich left his first wife after beginning an affair with Marianne Ginther.

So this” lady” was having an affair with a married Newt Gingrich. I guess she was for open marriages at one time.

  40. The attributes for a successful President have nothing to do with their sex life or marriage…weren’t we told that repeatly by the democrats during Clinton’s impeachment trial. Clinton wasn’t “convicted” ever for his sexual oddities while sitting at the desk in the Oval office, no matter how perverted or distracting they were…he was convicted of lying and lost his law license over it. Gingrich, as reported by ABC, has never lied about his sex life or mistresses…in fact he has been more transparent about it than the Obama campaighn has been about Biden’s recent fundraising efforts. Just why did they exclude the press from his speeches to fundraisers?

  41. until the MSM starts asking hard questions of Obama…I do not care what they drag out of the past from other candidates..

  42. The freaking lamestream media… they absolutely ignore and cover 2008 Dem candidate John Edwards’ affair (that produced a child no less) on his cancer-stricken, dying wife… but this 12-year old news about Newt’s affair is a front-page, blaring headline news.

Oh the hypocrisy of the Left/media.. it never ceases to amaze me, what they get away with.

  43. Ironic that Rick Perry in stepping down may have pushed Newt into the lead.

  44. You know I really don’t care about what she has to say.

Take a moment an rattle the cob webs out of your heads. HILLARY, look at this woman riding the coat tails of Billy.

She has been an embarrassment. Bill Clinton had many. many affairs and he was even impeached. That family has some real psychological problems.

People like this “woman” wants to get attention and be a “wh$#e and look that way let her. They all trot out for money and have been search out to ruin reputations, in time.

Seems when Hillary was running she told us she was attacked by gunfire in Bosnia. Lie, she loves to inflated her career. The means in which she does is for self serving purposes.

Sorry but I don’t feel Gingrich is running for the same reasons.

  45. @ Mamma Grizzly – I afraid a majority of Americans have long since given up on caring about the moral fiber of their leaders.

Bill Clinton’s shenanigans in the Oval Office, should have sent him slinking off into the sewer, like the sewer rat he is, never to be heard from again. Instead he is the beloved Elder Statesman of politics, currently revered by way too many people.

Hillary Clinton covered and condoned her husband’s lack of moral fiber and she’s seen by way too many people as the beloved leader of the State Department.

If the majority of Americans cared about true moral fiber in a leader, a Marxist/Socialist far-left radical named Barack oBama would never had been elected. His outright lies and political distortions to shred the Constitution and increase his own wealth and power, goes unchallenged.

Newt Gingrich will not get the nomination for many reasons, but warts and all, he would still be better than oBama.

  46. why didn’t the scorned beeotch come out when Newt first got in the race…my guess is that ozeros people are paying her some hefty amount of cash…

  47. #1 spot on………..this comes when Newt is up over Romney in South Carolina……….We all have known that Newt doesn’t have a good track-record when it comes to marriages………but neither do i ………sometimes it takes some of us more time and alot of growing up and with that comes with some bitterness and angery exes……..this shows more about her charater than it does Newt………..just sayin

  48. With all the push to redefine marriage by the freak left, this should be good news to them!

  49. Food for thought for you Newt supporters.

You call always tell a progressive is losing an intellectual argument when they resort to playing the moral equivalency card. I’m just saying…

  50. #28 Radegunda – You are sadly misinformed regarding Ron Paul’s stance on terror.

  51. at least he asked…

  52. This is dirty Chicago politics from Obama. He has been pulling this crap for years in this state. None of these democrats cared about Bill Clinton.
People change and I’d vote for Newt. Anyone but Obama.

Are The GOP Debaters Foolish Enough to Take CNN’s Bait?

The voters, however, largely understand the gravity of the situation — and once again are way ahead of most of the candidates and their consultants as well as the pundit class. Thus, they respond on those occasions when the candidates figure it out as well. On Monday night, Newt figured it out. He put the Bain disaster behind him and re-focused on the problem: Barack Obama and liberalism. He aimed, fired and scored several direct hits and might have saved his campaign in the process.

Tonight he and all of the candidates have another opportunity to do the same. There is the Keystone Pipeline issue just lying there for the taking, not to mention the recess appointments made by Obama and of course the NLRB assault on South Carolina is still a raw issue.

The candidate who ignores the CNN bait and his GOP opponents and focuses on the real problems will win this debate. If none of them figure this out, we all lose and it’s a win for CNN and Barack Obama. You know that and I know that instinctively. Why is this so hard to figure out?

You’ll never understand Paul’s foreign policy perspective unless you understand basic principles:

1.) The principle of “blowback” clearly stated by the CIA, resulting from our foreign policy.
2.) The difference between military spending and defense spending.
3.) A Constitutional approach to military action around the world.

These aren’t difficult concepts to grasp. Here’s the challenge: in order to INTEGRATE these concepts one must make a clear PARADIGM SHIFT from our policies over the past 50+ years. That paradigm shift is clearly underway in the American electorate.

  66. BREAKING: New Rasmussen poll now has Gingrich leading Romney in S.C.

    Rasmussen Reports

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has now surged ahead of Mitt Romney in the final Rasmussen Reports survey of the South Carolina Republican Primary race with the vote just two days away. The latest telephone survey of Likely GOP Primary Voters in the state finds Gingrich with 33% support to Romney’s 31%. Two days ago, before the last debate, it was Romney by 14 percentage points. Texas Congressman Ron Paul now runs third with 15% of the vote, followed by former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum at 11%. Paul’s support is steady while Santorum’s support has dropped five points since Monday….

God, can’t Newt find a woman who is at least pretty. Ugh!

  68. Me thinks retire05 has some personal issues which are totally irrelevent. Then to wish on another (Amjean) the same destruction you experienced, is petty and cruel. 73. http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/288514/very-bitter-robert-costa

In response to the Drudge Report’s scoop about Marianne Gingrich’s interview with ABC News, Bob Walker, a senior Gingrich adviser, tells National Review Online that the campaign will fight back. “It is pretty nasty to use personal tragedy for political exploitation,” he says. “That was a very bitter divorce, and you’re talking about somebody who is still, probably, very bitter.”

Beyond Walker, several sources close to the Gingrich campaign agree on the merits, but predict that Gingrich will likely ignore the story. They tell NRO that the interview is a “retread” of an Esquire magazine article published in 2010, and that Gingrich will not respond to the broadcast, at least in any official capacity.

“He’ll answer questions from voters, he’s not running away from anything, but these are old issues from the divorce,” says one source. “He has addressed these issues before, and there is nothing new here.”

but that’s the most maddening aspect of this farcical..

    IT’S NOT NEWS..

ALL OF THIS & MORE HAS BEEN AIRED TIME & AGAIN..

    ==

  91. Moral equivalency & justification via the “they (in this case Democrats) do it too argument”.

Yep Gingrich & his supporters really are Wilsonian Progressives of the 1st order.

  92. The reason I can’t vote for Newt is because he was for TARP. He and Romney thought TARP was necessary. Not conservative at all.

  96. BREAKING NEWS: Mitt Romney is still a lying POS, and a statist.

    Carry on.

  97. I think it is really good that all of this (Romney’s taxes, Gingrich’s personal life) is coming out now and not later in the year. Sure, the liberals will invent other stories but by then hopefully people will be sick of the personal attacks

Wouldn’t you have had to have been there to make an accusation like that and speak truthfully?
And we all know how much store you set in truthfulness as many times as you’ve called us liars and avowed your own truthfulness and belief in facts.

  103. We need somebody who can win over the Clinton Democrat… This helps.

  104. I don’t care for Newt regardless. He as been consistently against the US Constitution and individual liberty.

Whats funny is hearing you partisans complain about fat-boy Clintons exploits and then minimize the statist Newts actions.

Gingrich = accused of being OPEN & HONEST with his ex-wife..

[Documents related to the divorce filed Friday in Cobb County Superior Court include a separation agreement signed by the couple and notarized in December 1987. There is no indication it was ever filed.

Gingrich’s divorce attorney, Thomas Browning, said Marianne Gingrich called her husband on his birthday in June 1987 to tell him she was leaving him. Gingrich, he said, came back to Georgia to find his home emptied out.

Browning said the pair maintained separate residences
for six years before reconciling in late 1993 or early 1994.

I have loved Newt since back in his glory days with the Contract for America and term limits and the way he finessed Clinton into finally signing welfare reform…..but I remember being so angry at him for his “conspicuous absence” during the Clinton impeachment push. Then he quit! I would have – at one time – walked off a cliff like a lemming for the guy but his own retirement from the federal scene and his reluctance to focus on the egregious immorality of Clinton as our President made me suspicious. Also – his outrage at the Romney PAC ads about his having to pay $300,000 to the Sentae as the result of his ethics investigation (all he was mad about was that Romney called it a fine – it was semantics – he had to pay the money and he dis ) made me realize that Newt is on his Last Hurrah – Ego Style and……frankly – he lost me when he pulled away from impeaching that scoundrel Clinton.

I promise – I adored him like no other back in the day. But he has done a lot of things since then to convince me he is not the EGO we want in the White House. Too much weird stuff in his record and personal life.

I am with Mama Grizzly here about 100%.

re: [having to pay $300,000 to the Senate
as the result of his ethics investigation]

    December 8, 2011

Revisiting Newt Gingrich’s 1997 Ethics Investigation

    [With "Renewing American Civilization," history-professor-turned-
politician Newt Gingrich had a college course — a program that was
supposed to be insulated from partisan politics and campaign cash.

The litany he used in the classroom
sounds much like one he uses today.

"American civilization cannot survive with 12-year-olds having babies,
15-year-olds shooting one another, 17-year-olds dying of AIDS, and
18-year-olds graduating with diplomas they cannot read," Gingrich
    lectured.

But then, as now, Gingrich had several overlapping projects going on.
And Democrats alleged that Gingrich used the college course to promote
    a political agenda.

    [..]

For nearly two years, the House ethics committee
investigated this and other Democratic allegations.

In the end, the House voted overwhelmingly, 395-28,
to reprimand Gingrich and to fine him $300,000.

    [..]

The original charges had fallen by the wayside. Gingrich admitted
he had unintentionally but materially misled the committee and had
failed to keep the college course insulated from partisan politics.
    ]

so much for manufactured crisis’.. /s/

oh yeah, did you know he was an “indispensable early trailblazer”??

no, neither did i, but i do now, and so do you..

  129. RE: Jorgen…..In a world where the social construct of marriage is under serious challenge (as in should it really be only a contract between a man and a woman in order to propagate our race in a civilized manner?) – you better believe that there are many of us who believe in that contract between a man and a woman and the sanctity of marriage between ONE man and ONE woman.

And those of you who say otherwise are not only not conservatives – you are fringe – extreme fringe – Democrats.

Please feel free to vote accordingly if this is the major thing we all want to focus on as our nation is crumbling into a European socialist model.

  130. FLASHBACK VIDEO:

“If You Cheat On Your Wife, You’ll Cheat On Your Business Partner” – Rick Perry

    http://www.breitbart.tv/perry-if-you-cheat-on-your-wife-youll-cheat-on-your-business-partner/

Perry is such a moron. He and Newt deserve each other.

  131. I am not sure how many people can claim to have lead flawless or pure lifes. I am sure that someone who is a politician has to have less than a really, really moral stature, although there are a few exceptions. But those who are throwing stones at Newt had better explain why they didn’t hold McCain, Guliana, Obama, Clinton,Kennedy, Barney Frank, and many., many others to the same standard.

I do not approve of Newt’s behavior. But in weighing the nation’s future if I am asked to factor in Newt’s failures against Obama’s endless lies and failues I think I’ll side with Newt.

Compared to Romney and Romney’s Obamalike tactics and lies, there is no question that I’d prefer Newt.

Newt is not my first choice, but I’d rather support him than rely on Romney, a human weathervane and the dhimmies choice.

  132. So, Marrianne, Calista was to you as you were to Jackie. You knew he was a cheater when you married him…and you have the gall to talk about ‘moral character’? You must really be a liberal because you are such a hypocrite….
The world is on fire and BHO is at Disney World….somehow that is appropriate….and the media wants to talk about Newt not keeping his pants zipped 17 years ago. I hope he mops the floor with the CNN ‘moderators’ tonight…

  133. Why do you say that Romney is the Dhimmies choice (and yes, I know what that means)?

    He’s pro-military, pro-Israel, and anti-Iran etc.

  134. Rick Santorum 2012

  135. We have never – ever – in American history seen more of a human weathervane and the dhimisses’ choice than Obama. The reason we are paying twice the amount fro gasoline is because Obama’s main campaign contributors come form the OPEC nations…..

So stop the effort to equate Romney with the likes of our first Muslim President – Obama.

It is rhetorically ineffective. We have never – ever -ever -ever – seen the likes of a man like Obama in the White House and if God loves our nation as I believe He does – we never will again.

  136. I still think she’s broken-hearted and po’d too. Who wouldn’t be? OPEN MARRIAGE??

Why Newt would do this: divorce looked worse back then for candidates, so he wanted to keep the image and still bang the aide.

Now listen: do you want this in the White House? Regardless of what the media is blabbing?

Do you want this “Oh, Newt, I really don’t care what you do–I’ll still “be there” for you. . . ” as our FIRST LADY?

    Really?

We already have one man in office who has beyond questionable morals (the whole gay thing, likes white blonde women bi thing) and we see it does leak into his “leadership.”

Black, mulato, white — doesn’t matter. Dem/Repub. Doesn’t matter. This kind of thing is a mirror to the rest of their dealings.

I can’t vote for this kind of “representation.”

    Staking my vote on Romney.

I was impressed with the “Pro Life Accomplishments” video on his website.

  137. I think maybe the politics of personnel destruction has about caused a majority of folks to align it with calls of racism and chuck the whole business in to the sewer for flushing… I look for Newt to do very well in South Carolina

  138. I don’t want to hear anything from the media except the digging they have done on comrade downgrade.

  139. So Marianne is complaning that Newt did to her what he did with her to his first wife? Did she think that by her cheating with him that he would change when he married her? Sorry about your bitterness, but then your were just as dumb as his was. Differnce is, He has apologized for his indiscretions. Just another hit piece by the lame stream media to take out a potential candidate that scares the left to death. They sure would not want Newt in a debate with their chosen one.

  140. Since when does character count? It didn’t count when Clinton was President. It doen’t count with Obama. He can say any lie that pops into his head and no one cares. I see someone is spreading lies about Herman Cain. If they actually had proof of wrong doing, they would have ran, at the speed of light, to the media for the money they could get from Obama’s scum merchants. So instead, They just spread the lies that the media already made up. Content to think the worse of everyone. Whatever is necessary to help fearless leader. How many of you folks are divorced? How many have done things you shouldn’t have? Clinton lie under oath with the cameras running and nobody cared. He could do no wrong. Why do you care now?

  141. WASHINGTON — The woman who was wed for 18 years to Republican White House hopeful Newt Gingrich said in an interview airing Thursday that her ex-husband asked for an “open marriage” after carrying on a six-year affair with an aide.

Check out the Esquire 2010 interview with the chain smoking Marianne…..

Newt had admitted to a SIX YEAR AFFAIR with one of his employees.

Good Grief. Pray your daughters never bite on a the offerings of such a loser – please.

  144. I also read a report by a close friend of Gingrich and his Ex that said there was more to the story than just hers and that both played a part in the marriage ending. To wait this long before saying anything smacks of revenge and since Gingrich has never said a bad word about her and probably won’t it leaves him to try to answer questions without blaming her for anything. What she’s saying could be true but since he’s not the same person he was years ago and has proven it in this marriage and in turning to God I consider this irrelevant to my support for Gingrich. I doubt there are many of us who could stand up to a scrutiny of our past lives even if we’ve changed and learned from past mistakes. One thing is for sure she hasn’t forgotten or forgiven even if what’s she’s alleging isn’t completely true. So I ask is it revenge or truthful concern.

  145. Wow, she’s still not over it! Why are bitter comments from the ex wife being taken so seriously?

We need to focus on the important issues. If Newt is elected, that “news” will be a flash in the pan. Our country’s notably great but flawed presidents include Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Dwight Eisenhower, and JFK among others. If citizens then had the same type of technology we have today, the country might have been in danger of having had a different history.
