Noted Psychoanalyst Determines #OWS Protesters Are Nuts (Video)

Noted psychoanalyst Karen Ruskin PSY.D told Bill O’Reilly last night that the Occupy Wall Street protesters were unstable and on the road to depression. “I’m a psychotherapist so clearly I deal with people every day who have problems… I feel that they are lacking in strength and courage to move themselves forward.”
“Not only do I not get a positive vibe from these people I’m actually extremely concerned.”

I agree that many of these protestors seem to being having difficulty moving from a state of dependance (childhood) to independance (adulthood). Like typical adolesents they want to be dependant and independant at the same time. This internal conflict often leads them into some form of rebellion, which ideally leads an adolescent to want to get a job and leave their parents home. These protestors don’t want to grow up, so instead of learning how to support themselves they want the government to act as substitute parent, so they can’t remain stuck in their current stage of development. Ergo, they want remain teenagers for the rest of their natural lives. That is my take on the situation and I think it’s accurate.

They’re reactionary and easily exploited by those with much more savvy than they have, by those with an agenda they don’t and can’t comprehend. They’re completely incapable of ‘connecting the dots’, seeing consequences and outcomes. They can’t see the whole picture. They have no knowledge of history, and have no reference points. They know what they’ve been told.
Unfortunately they’re also the product of the 30 + years of child raising theory. They’ve either been left to make their own decisions, whatever ‘feels right’ with no guidance (arguably making them ripe for whoever came around and gave them rules and structure to live by). Or their lives have been strictly structured by multiple activities for them to be involved in, with the same result – inability to self regulate without someone telling them what the rules are and how to behave. They have no inner barometer to measure by. regardless their talk about democracy, they can only play at it. We live in one, they don’t recognize that and they’re incapable of living in it.
What they don’t recognize is that they are promoting giving up that very freedom. Nor do they understand that in giving up that freedom, they will be giving up so much more.

Unfortunately, I think this was the Progressive plan all the time. The intent was reach out to individual identity groups, racial minorities, students, women, LGBT and general anarchists, that they are in someway a “victim” and all victims must unite against the oppressor. In their case, the “oppressor” is capitalism and the American way of life. Now we have large swaths of citizens who have been trained by their parents and taught by their teachers that ultimately every disappointment in life can be blamed on someone else. They were never taught the power and freedom of free will, so why in the world would they understand the concept of self-empowerment? Progressives have prevented at least two generations of citizens from knowing the potential of their own individual free will and now they must be dependent on the state for their survival.

Hajj Settlement is a dangerous Precedent
["The decision announced on Thursday, October 13, 2011 of the Berkeley Board of Education to settle a lawsuit with the Department of Justice (DOJ) will have implications that reach far beyond the case of Safoorah Khan, a non-tenured computer math lab teacher who had worked for the district for just a little over one-year. In her suit Ms. Khan alleged that the district forced her to choose between her religion and her livelihood when it denied her request for three weeks of unpaid leave to perform Hajj in 2008. The board denied the request twice because it did not meet the requirements of the union contract which gave uniform standards for leave that applied to all employees.
While AIFD believes religious freedom is a cornerstone of American constitutional civil liberties the adjudication of the conflict between an arbitrary demand of an employee that cloaks themselves in religion and an employer who must treat all employees equally is a critical fault line in the battle between theocracy and secular society.
While I am sure the pressure on the board to settle was immense with DOJ's involvement, it is lamentable because it creates a dangerous precedent by lowering the threshold of what merits action for civil rights abuse.
In Ms. Khan's case the federal government has taken the wrong side. By championing Ms. Khan's case which stepped outside of the contract that she and all other certified staff signed with the Berkeley School District, DOJ is essentially making Muslims a privileged class. The interpretation this case demands speaks contrary to the very principle of "ensuring that workplaces are free of bias," that Jacqueline A. Berrien, Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) claims to promote.
The DOJ and their choir of Islamist groups have deceptively positioned that Muslims like Ms. Khan "should not have to choose between their religious practice and their livelihood." Contrarily, I believe that employers should not have to choose between the threat of intimidation from Islamists or the federal government and honoring the onerous and ultimately limitless demands of any single faith group or individual as a privileged class.
By forcing this settlement the DOJ is empowering an Islamist mindset that demands special consideration above all others which is unacceptable in a society where all are equal before the law.
Further the terms of the settlement are chilling in their Orwellian dictate that Berkeley provide mandatory training on religious accommodation to all board of education members, supervisors, managers, administrators and human resources officials who participate in decisions on religious accommodation requests made by its employees and prospective employees. It is incredulous to us that the Government is now entering into the business of teaching which versions of religion are politically correct and which ones are not.
Ms. Khan's request was outside the scope of the Union Contract she signed. The Berkeley officials treated her as an equal to her peers and have now lost a civil rights case for that equal treatment. It seems completely contradictory to the intent of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which this case was filed under. With Ms. Khan, DOJ has essentially reconstituted a separate but equal status for American Muslims."]

Due to the takeover of Socialists who have created a whole sector of our society, Blacks, who were told they deserved, and were entitled to taxpayer money for their life, has breeded people who don’t care about working for what they want out of life, and starting their own business is just to much work, look back on what the Blacks got and they to, want someone to take care of them instead of taking all those risks and expence. This the Socialist knew would happen to our country if they took over large parts of our culture and society. They knew human behavior because the Communists have a long history of taking over whole countries and enslaving their people. They know how people are going to act under certain pressures, and they have tested these results and have formulated schemes and have made it a science as to how to do certain things and get certain results and certain actions. Like, they knew what would happen when Barney Frank and Chris Dodd pull the plug on Freddie and Fannie. They knew it would wipe out 45% of working people’s savings and 401K investments they had so they wouldn’t be dependent on Social Security when they retired. Communist don’t give a damn about what those people lost. And now that it took place when it did, those people are to old to have time to make that money up again. It’s gone, and now they are going to be even more dependent on Social Security. That is exactly what the Socialist want, and that is the more people are dependent on the government for support, the better, and the harder it will be to cut that funding because of the negative impact it would have on people who, now, are having to depend on the government instead of themselves. That is the affect of Socialism on America.
We don’t deserve what has happened to us, but that does not remove the fact that there will be no one to do the work like they did, to replace all the money back into the Social Security fund so that those who are preparing to retire will be able to get what they’ve paid in and beyond.
Young people these days don’t have a father who works as a telephone lineman who has a son who wants to do that kind of work as well, anymore. Most all those kinds of jops don’t exist anymore, and neither do those son’s who would be taking their fathers place when they got big enough. It’s because America’s birthrate has dropped to White people, 1.4 children per household. That is a ratio that spells death for White people in this country. Some other races don’t think that is such a bad trend, especially when you are looking at Mexican’s at 2.8% and Muslims at 3.6% the largest growing race in the country. And do you think any of those people want to start their own business in America in order to make America the great and powerful nation it once was? No! They could care less about that. And besides going into your own business is a sin under Islam. You aren’t supposed to have “ambition” in the Koran because it’s a sin to have the desire for money and the means to make a lot of it.
Can America survive? Not unless people want to be as prosperous as generations here used to be. Unless young people want to work hard to become somebody, that is if multiculturalism hasn’t taken that desire away from them. You know how that is, don’t you? Under Multiculturalism American’s aren’t any better than anyone else and we shouldn’t want to do better than somebody else in some other country just because we can. That’s no reason to do and be better than somebody else.

What did a certain unmentionable radio talk show host coin? The title of one of his recent books was “Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder”. And some known German psychologist a few years ago studied people who were liberal in the personal beliefs, ideology, societal, fiscal, and he determined that they were all mentally ill and emotionally disturbed. He said most were depressed neurotic’s who had problems with making connection with reality. He said most would have problems with relationships with other people especially the opposite sex and usually those particular relationships would end badly with the liberal being the person with the biggest problems due to their detachment with reality. In other words liberals live in a fantasy world where they believe that their idea of what the world should be like has problems because there are things and people who mess with their world and it won’t get to where the liberal believes it needs to be because of those messing with it.
Yeah, we’re messing with the world they believe America should be, yeah, we won’t let it become the Communist country they want it to become in their fantasy world. You damn right we won’t. So I guess these sick people who call themselves liberals need to go on ahead and put themselves in a mental institution and stay there until we think they’re well.

I saw a clip of Dr Karen commenting about the Occupy Wall Street protests on Bill O’Reilly’s show, and I really object to the use of psychological theory to dismiss a political movement. You can’t make generalizations from psychological models (in this case, I assume she was referring to learned helplessness theory) to make statements about the mental health of groups of individuals taking action in particular economic and social circumstances. Moreover, the conclusions simply don’t stand comparison with real data.
If the demand for a fair distribution of income is associated with mental ill-health, how come that countries such as Norway, Denmark and Finland regularly come at the top of international comparisons on happiness (see http://worlddatabaseofhappiness.eur.nl)? Also, how come that INEQUALITIES in income have been shown to be robust predictors of a wide range of social ills including physical and mental ill-health (see Wilkinson, R., & Pickett, K., The spirit level: Why more equal societies almost always do better. London: Penguin, 2009) and unhappiness (Oishi, S., Kesebir, S., & Diener, E. Income inequality and happiness. Psychological Science, DOI: 10.1177/0956797611417262)? Its just a fact that societies with high levels of inequality are less happy. and have higher levels of crime and mental illness, than equal societies.
Dr Karen’s position is untenable not only because it is inconsistent with scientific evidence but also because, as even Bill O’Reilly seemed to realize, it fails to acknowledge that the protesters might have genuine (even if disagreeable to many readers of this website) political and ethical concerns about corporate greed in America.
