Michigan Professor Offers Extra Credit For Students to Attend Occupy Protest

Professor Jeanne Lorentzen from Northern Michigan University if offering her students 20 points extra credit if they attend one of the far left rallies in the area.
The Blaze reported:

A sociology professor at Northern Michigan University has purportedly offered her students extra credit for taking part in a local Occupy protest.

According to an email obtained by The Blaze, Professor Jeanne Lorentzen is offering students in her introductory sociology course 20 extra credit points if they attend an Occupy the Upper Peninsula demonstration with her on Saturday. Students who do not wish to attend the protest have the option of writing a 20-page term paper about a social movement to receive the same extra credit. Neither assignment is compulsory.

The email says students who choose to attend must make a protest sign that can say anything as long as it’s not “offensive, rude or divisive.” To qualify for the extra credit, students must sign an attendance sheet twice, at the beginning and end of the march.

Academe in America today is a bastion of way left liberalism. Do you think that professor would give any of her students credit for attending a Tea Party event? I doubt it.

After we repeal Obamacare, and get rid of the EPA regs that are killing our economy, (amongst many other things to return America to the center) we will need to begin work on extricating the liberals from academe. They are for diversity of everything but thought.

First, we should think about de-funding the Federal Dept of Education. There is no Constitutional basis for its existence. We should let the States deal with education and say good riddance to the liberals who are teaching kids WHAT to think, instead of HOW to think.

Have fun lady, if I had a kid that school I would first file a complaint and secondly pulled them out. Then I would ask for refund for her class.

In any moderate or larger sized company, Lorentzen would be immediately fired for creating a hostile work environment. Having failed to consider that:

1. OWS is openly and fiercely anti-Jew (and even if this wasn’t open, it is immaterial as harassment law is mostly a function of the perceptuality of the target; most Jews are quite cognizant that “rich bankers” itself is a signification for Jew, used extensively by the 1930s German progressive socialists).

2. OWS is an environment shown already to be attacking minorities and women (due to improper political orientation) and is simply not an acceptable environment to be associated within the directives of ethical university conduct.

3. OWS is not a safe environment for students. Providing incentives for young women undergraduates to go hang out at violent biker bars with a record of rapes and other crimes against women would not be acceptable, nor is encouraging students to put their lives at risk in this environment.

Let’s not screw around any more with misfits like this professor: fire her ass or we take away the university’s Federal and state funding for violating equal opportunity laws.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I don’t have a problem with this. If she is teaching sociology, which covers things like group behavior, then attending a protest would be relevant. She didn’t tell the students that they had to put any specific message on a sign, and the exercise is extra credit and not mandatory.

There is also the chance the the students will be totally freaked out/ repulsed by what they are seeing… which wouldn’t be a bad thing.

I feel it’s my moral duty to inform Ms. Lorentzen that, Sociologically, the main competition to her 99% of all idiots group is going to be the Homeless, not the “rich”. From what we’ve seen so far, the 99%ers don’t seem to be very well trained in those particular survival skills, especially since they are trying to kill off their own sole source of “sustainability”.

I’m tired of seeing teachers use students as their own personal property to be channeled into whatever political cause the teacher supports. Handing out higher grades for supporting the teacher’s pet poltiical project is corrupt.

Assigning a 20-page term paper as an “alternative” to writing a few words on ONE SIGN and showing up at a protest does not make it right. There is not even remote equivalence between attending a march with a sign and writing a 20-page college term paper.

If she gave students equal credit for attending a tea party rally with a sign (or any other peaceful rally of the STUDENTS’ choice), at least she wouldn’t be using students as her own personal political property. What she is doing here — channeling students to HER political cause in exchange for higher grades — is wrong even if it’s called “extra credit,” and the university should not allow it.

And was this opportunity for credit included in her syllabus when she wrote it at the beginning of the semester? Doubtful, since there was no OWS “movement” then. Students who are opposed to OWS should challenge any offer of extra credit to OWS supporters, because it was not in the syllabus.

What these people are doing is political theater. They aren’t out there to protest change from liberalism that has destroyed our culture, or traditions, and opened our borders to people who are criminals and illegals. They are being allowed to be on the TV just like the protesters were during the Vietnam war, where the will of the American people was broken and they turned against the purpose of the war, and support of our government that was backing our troops and the legal government of South Vietnam. Okay, I’m not naive, I know that it was a corrupt government and needed somebody to take it over that believed in freedom and liberty for the Vietnamese people. But you also have to understand that these people had numerous forms of rule over generations and hundreds of years. They told me that they really didn’t care who ran the country as long as they can grow their crops and take them to market and make enough money to be able to take care of their families. That’s about what we want here. But these protesters don’t think that our Constitution is getting that done anymore.

But what these people don’t realize is the Constitution has not be observed as the law of the land and it has been ignored and bypassed for many years. There are few people who remember how this country was when the Constitution was being obeyed, and as far as conservatism is concerned, it has not been applied to the economy for decades and administrations upon another. If Capitalism and conservatism had been applied to our land from the end of WWII to now, for one thing we wouldn’t have a Marxist in the White House, but we wouldn’t have a George Bush either. They would be more like Reagan than anything else, and we’d all have it good. No jobs would have been lost to China, and our borders would be sealed as they are supposed to be according to our Constitution. And there wouldn’t be any reason for protesters to be on Wall Street as the banks there would be minding the law, and not having the growth that we’ve seen in the past twenty years. It would be more stable, and prosperous as well without the monsterous profits, that were more politically motivated for backdoor support than out in front for all to see, as it should be. If they have nothing to hide than as is reasonable there would be more clearity.

Universities have been ripping off our kids for 25 years, by adding layers of staff, building overly extravagant megaliths and setting up a tenure / retirement program for the “professors” that will eclipse what most of the kids can achieve in a lifetime.

Fed-Guv is in collusion via “student loans” that make it easy to go deep in debt, yet immune from bankruptcy!

If the 99% crowd had sllab’s they would be protesting these con artists!
