The famous Laffer Curve shows that when government has a zero tax rate, it
gets zero revenue. When it has a 100% tax rate, it gets 100% of nothing and
thus has zero revenue. The curve bulges in the middle to show that there is
a rate of taxation that produces the greatest amount of revenue to government.
Conservatives argue that when tax rates are too high, lowering the rate will
increase government revenues. This implies that tax rates had been above
those that produced the bulge. Lowering the rate moves us down towards the
bulge in revenues.
Liberals argue that if only we could increase tax rates, we could have more
revenue to spend on “vital programs”. They assume that tax rates place us
below the bulge.
But both of these positions miss a fundamental point. Consider that when
there is zero government, the resulting anarchy makes society unlivable and
thus destroys liberty. But when government takes over every single function
of life, there cannot be any liberty at all. The preamble of the
Constitution tells us that we form a government to “secure the Blessings of
Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity”. The Constitution then goes on to
describe a structure of limited and enumerated powers. Too little
government as well as too much both destroy liberty. So, obviously there is
an optimum level of government, a bulge in the middle, of optimum liberty. I
call this the Liberty Curve.
In advocating lower tax rates, Conservatives are advancing the wrong aspect
of government. Our obligation to ourselves and our Posterity is not to
optimize the amount of money the government has to spend by optimizing tax
rates, but to optimize the level of liberty that each citizen has by
optimizing the level of government! As government grows, our liberty must
retreat. But for our own protection, we must have some level of government.
I know that level is far less than we have today.
We would not be in the mess we are currently in if our focus had been on
liberty as compared to spending. Even the idea of running a perpetual
deficit destroys liberty, for it places all future taxpayers in a form of
debt-servitude from which we cannot allow escape, lest government be unable
to service the debt incurred by those long dead.
We can start down the Liberty Curve by spending less than we take in. We
are not anywhere near doing that with the current debt and budget debate
going on in Washington at this very moment.
Futher, the Rahn Curve shows us that when tax rates get above about 20%,
people who do have some measure of control over how they structure their
financial affairs take active steps to decline to pay more in taxes. It is
just a fact of life that any politician attempting to increase revenues by
raising taxes will be disappointed, and any plans and budgets that depend on
those higher revenues will fail.

The only way out is to spend less and shrink the size of government. The
only way out of the debt morass is to boost wealth creation. The only way
to boost wealth creation is by giving entrepreneurs more liberty to create
more wealth and jobs. But government cannot pick and choose who will start
the next Apple or Microsoft. But it can pollute the risk-taking environment
so that nobody will be willing to invest their time or money in new ideas.
When government tells such people beforehand that you can only deduct $3,000
of your losses, but we will take too much of any gains that you make, the
more government tells us that it will take, the fewer people there will who
will try. And right now, we cannot have too many people starting up or
funding new business ventures! So, apart from cutting government spending,
we need to do something that big government types just cannot do: give
people more liberty.

Yeah, and they keep blasting Keynesian Economics as ineffective. But I’m pretty sure the Keynes they taught back in the day didn’t recommend printing money and throwing it away. I grew up in Texas, where we all agreed that the only color that mattered, was green. What’s good for our economy overall is good for all our families, including the black ones. We knew that all we needed was a level playing field, and we wanted that.

If I believed that Kyl would press for serious spending cuts, really shrinking the size of government back to constitutional levels, I would support his idea that the debt ceiling needs to be raised, in the sense of a short term bandaid only.
But I don’t believe for one second that he supports real cuts in the size of government, and therefore his support for raising the debt ceiling is just more obfuscation to cover for more tax-and-spend irresponsibility.

To me, this is the real story. There is going to be disagreement amongst conservatives as to tactics, but comparing your base — the people that got you a majority in the House — to Obama. As part of its six-month investigation into NIH’s budget, the coalition discovered that the agency awarded more than $90 million to the Chinese government over the last decade, including $30 million in the last two and half years alone to scientists working at Chinese universities and institutions to research medical issues that affect Chinese citizens.
The coalition has also found that NIH has paid more than half a billion in funding grants to researchers to “conduct bizarre projects such as trying to find out if a mother rat will abandon her babies if given cocaine, and asking individuals to mail in their toenail clippings.”

Sorry, but that is exactly what Keynesian economics teaches: that the Economy is the total of (C) capital + (I) Investment + (G) government spending. Printing money to pay people to dig a ditch and to pay others to fill them in is, in Keynes’ theory, just as effective as paying people to build autos or write software.
Worse, Keynes teaches that all your income belongs to us, and it is ours to manipulate and spread around as we see fit. This one of the ways we get to $123,000 per year government jobs in a nation with a median household income of $52,026.

What the Tea Party Movement Stands For
[The issues and ideas that are at the core of the Tea Party movement:
1) All forms of government must abide by the
boundaries set forth in state and federal constitutions.
2) All pork and earmarks in the stimulus, omnibus bills, and bailouts must be reversed and repealed. The national budget must be balanced. Spending cuts, not increased taxation should be used to balance the budget.
3) Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness implies personal responsibility, not handouts, free-enterprise and capitalism, not government controlled economies. Some people choose to be irresponsible (and of course some fall on hard times due to circumstances), but it is not the responsibility of the general public, vis-a-vis government intervention, to guarantee or bailout irresponsibility and failure. Private individuals and organizations give out of compassion and generosity, not compulsion through taxation. laws, and pork barrel projects.
4) ALL elected and appointed officials are under the
employment and serve at the will of We the People.
5) Excessive tax burdens kill prosperity.
6) Excessive national debt is generational theft, and stealing the
future of our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
7) Neither major political party is "clean" on these issues. Both Democrats and Republicans have taxed excessively and neither have restrained the hand of government effectively. There are certainly individual representatives who have been faithful to their constituents and to the Constitution. However, too many are engaged in protecting their congressional positions and turf. The majority of government officials have insulated themselves from the people they serve, and hold themselves above the law. We are simply saying, "No, you aren't above the law".

TARP funds benefited foreign banks more, says oversight panel

A congressional watchdog criticized, Thursday, the US government’s handling of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), which was set up as a $700 billion rescue fund for ailing local financial firms in 2008, saying it aided banks in foreign countries more than rescue programs of other countries helped US businesses.
The Congressional Oversight Panel accused, Thursday, the US Treasury of mishandling TARP money, saying that foreign banks received far more help from the US rescue effort than local financial firms did.
The panel cited, for instance, the rescue case of troubled insurer American International Group (AIG). Even as the US government “bore the entire $70 billion risk of the AIG capital injection program,” banks in France and Germany turned out to be the biggest beneficiaries, the panel said.
“The US share of this single rescue exceeded the size of France’s entire $35 billion capital injection program and was nearly half the size of Germany’s $133 billion program,” the panel said in its latest report

I just got off the phone with a source on Capitol Hill who has spent the past few days trying to convince Republicans to vote for a debt ceiling hike.
He told me that the biggest obstacle he faces has been “market complacency.”
“Frankly, a bit of panic would be very helpful right now,” he said.

“We were following the script from 2008. When the market collapsed after TARP failed, that spooked everyone enough to get them to fall in line. We thought the same thing would happen this week,” he said.
