The police were called in to clear the square for cleaning.
They did. Police beat the sit-in protesters with clubs today in Barcelona, Spain.

121 were injured today in Barcelona as police cleared the square for cleaning.
The Washington Post reported:
The protests across Spain over the past two weeks to demand jobs, economic equality, and “real democracy” turned violent Friday for the first time.
Officials say 121 people were injured in Barcelona as protesters clashed with police officers clearing a makeshift camp. The police had previously told protesters the square had to be cleared so that cleaning services could move in to remove debris.
Catalonia regional Interior Ministry spokesman Felip Puig said 37 police were also injured. He did not say how many people had been arrested.
The protests that started just before the elections last weekend reflect the growing anger among 16- to 24-year-olds who face a jobless rate of an incredible 45 percent, and a construction sector slump that has caused nearly two years of recession.

We are alarmed that the federal government ignores the constraints placed on it by the Constitution, and now in the name of humanitarianism but which is really cronyism, it is breaking the financial back of the country.
There are only 4 ways out of the current massive deficit quandary our politicians have placed us into; massive reductions in spending, massive tax hikes, massive deficit ongoing, or defaulting on the debt obligation, one way of doing that being to allow massive inflation.

I live in Spain where a group of protesters camped out for about a week some 50 yards from my front door. They were peaceful and quiet, but they were messy. After a certain point the square where they were looked very trashy and ugly. Eventually they left the encampment, but the square bears the scars of their being there with red paint all over the ground and stains everywhere. These people are still hovering around, having sit-ins in front of banks and in the square. Their presence makes the place seem trashy. I’m sorry they don’t have jobs, but attacking capitalism isn’t going to help them.

We’ve seen many groups of protesters lighting fires, turning over cars, breaking windows, and throwing rocks… they are usually not dealt with as harshly..

I guess the real question is.. Will the turmoil in Spain manifest itself into useful change, or merely an opportunity for those in power to exercise more power?

I’ve noticed something about these ‘socialists’ and political activists. First, they love ‘peaceful’ demonstrations. But, they don’t seem to DO ANYTHING but antagonize. If their ‘peaceful’ demonstration doesn’t spur the authorities into a negative response, then there will be rioting by young men/women with their faces covered. If that doesn’t work in bringing about any strong reactions, then they start burning cars in the streets and setting up roadblocks.
One-two-three…. In lockstep, almost as if from some sort of activist manual, these actions seem to follow. All the time they love to paint themselves as innocent protesters until they can force the police to act or over-react.
A good crack in the teeth with a billy-club is the best thing that could happen at this stage.

You are completely wrong… Spain is part of the PIGS much before Zapatero come to power. It’s a cultural and structural situation, that goes centuries back.
The crisis was seeded by the Popular Party (Hard Right wing) creating a big real state bubble and encouraging all the Spaniards families and business to live on credit and loans. Creating a big bluff economy of current people thinking they were rich.
You can blame Zapatero because he tried to hide the crisis, minimize it, being a complete liar on all his electoral promises and not having guts (and this is a Socialist weakness) to propose and execute real measures to get out of the crisis, and risking his popularity.
