Osama bin Laden dead: Yes, SEALs were in on the raid, but aides hail Obama’s office bravery

President Obama was notified of Osama bin Laden’s location in August 2010. He hemmed and he hawed and he voted present. It took him until April 29 to gather himself enough to authorize a raid.
The Washington Examiner reported -

After exploring every angle for months, they concluded that all signs pointed to this being bin Laden’s residence.

President Obama was made aware of the compound when it was discovered last year. By mid-February, the intelligence was solid and since mid-March, Obama led five meetings with the National Security Council regarding the issue.

Intelligence officials worked with the U.S. military to plan the operation and a small team accepted the risk and began to train for it.

On April 29, this past Friday, Obama gave the final go ahead.

As Andrew Malcolm of The LA Times pointed out:

According to early reports of the incident, detailed here in The Ticket, 24 SEALs rappelled down ropes from hovering Chinooks in post-midnight darkness Monday Pakistan time with Osama security forces shooting at them. Brennan didn’t have much time to go into all that today, the goal is to elevate the ex-state senator to at least a one-star commander-in-chief.

Here’s something else that didn’t get much recognition in all the street celebrations or all-hail-Obama briefings:

The trail to Monday morning’s assault on Osama’s Pakistan compound began during someone else’s presidency. That previous president authorized enhanced interrogation techniques which convinced folks like Khalid Shaikh Mohammed to give up, among many other things, the name of their top-secret courier, now deceased. His travels ultimately led the CIA back to Osama’s six-year-old suburban home.

  2. “It took him until April 29 …”

Someone should give close study to the opinion polls that came out on April 28 to find the explanation.

  10. From the linked article

“President Obama was made aware of the compound when it was discovered last year. By mid-February, the intelligence was solid and since mid-March, Obama led five meetings with the National Security Council regarding the issue.”

I used to think conservatives were generally honest and liberals were always spinning the facts to score political points. Thanks for clearing up my misconceptions. I’ll be careful not to trust conservative sources anymore.

  11. I will show the actual excerpt from which some trolls are taking their more condensed, more syntactically jumbled quote about Bush not caring about UBL, which they post thusly:

G.W. Bush, 9/13/01. “I don’t know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don’t care. It’s not that important. It’s not our priority.”

In actuality, with important nuance, the quote is this:

“So I don’t know where he is. You know, I just don’t spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. I’m more worried about making sure that our soldiers are well-supplied; that the strategy is clear; that the coalition is strong; that when we find enemy bunched up like we did in Shahikot Mountains, that the military has all the support it needs to go in and do the job, which they did…

Q : But don’t you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won’t truly be eliminated until he is found either dead or alive?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven’t heard much from him . . . I — I’ll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him.”

Run along little troll/liberal you are not wanted here!

  13. Mark Levin made an astute observation: in order to puff their leader up, Obama’s henchmen will now leak classified info about value of intelligence gathered during this raid. They already reported about found Osama’s HD, his computers, wealth of data etc.

  14. #11
They knew he was OBL’s courier. They knew he would lead them to OBL.

I clicked on the link and this is what I found:

Last August, intelligence officials tracked the men to their residence in Abbottabad, Pakistan, a relatively wealthy town 35 miles north of Islamabad where many retired military officers live.

“When we saw the compound where the brothers lived, we were shocked by what we saw,” a senior administration official said.
    [...]

While the two brothers, the couriers, had no known source of income, the compound was built in 2005 and valued at $1 million. That led intelligence officials to conclude that it must have been built to hold a high-value member of Al Qaeda.

Further intelligence gathering found that there was another family who lived on the compound which had a size and makeup that matched the bin Laden members who would have most likely been with Osama.

After exploring every angle for months, they concluded that all signs pointed to this being bin Laden’s residence.

  15. Moderate Patriot,

You need to go here and tell this idiot. He’s humping the fake quote:

  16. WoW! Malcolm lobs a pretty scathing critique of Brennan and the former community organizer. And coming from the LA Slimes. What a surprise.

But the real heroes of this mission are those who were flying in the dead of night in a Chinook. And if Al Jihadi Jazeera (the White House’s favorite news source) is right, capture, not kill, was the mission. So here is how I figured it went down:

Team Leader: Y’all understand the mission is to capture bin Laden, right?

    SEAL team: Yes, sir.

Team Leader: OK, men, let’s roll.

    On the Chinook:

Team Leader: I want to let you men know that the first priority is for you to come out of this alive. Got it?

    Team: Yes, Sir.

Team Leader: Let me say this, if one of you finds the target, and you decide to just pop him, I’ve got your back. A dead terrorist in custody is better than a dead SEAL, got it?

    Team: YES, SIR!

  17. They discovered the existence of the compound in August! CIA was still debating the likelihood of UBL’s presence there in December. Panetta decided on a raid in February. Debate continued on the proper course to take until the President was finally briefed on March 14 and he gave his okay. Two weeks later rehearsals began. Panetta began holding daily meetings in April and he reported that the CIA had concluded UBL was really there on April 19. The operation was ready and authorized on April 29. After a 24-hour delay due to bad weather, they pulled the mission off.

    Give credit where ’tis due.

  18. Brennan didn’t have much time to go into all that today, the goal is to elevate the ex-state senator to at least a one-star commander-in-chief.

    OUCH!

  19. I think we should concentrate our negative energy on Obama only when it is applicable. It IS possible that he does some things right. I was always annoyed when my liberal friends refused to give Bush credit for anything, just because there was so much past evidence of blunder and imperial bluster. We should all chill…

  20. I don’t know if anyone else noticed it last night or not. When we were waiting for Obama to make his speech, the cameras were on Geraldo, and split screen with the White House. The White House was llit up. Suddenly, the lights went out , both inside and out. They were out for about 30 seconds and everything came back on.
My daughter said they were having a moment of silence, and short prayer for bin Laden.

  21. Obama was thoughtful and deliberate with this operation unlike Bush who rushed into Iraq with the slimmest of intel.

  22. Nanna1, I saw that. It was right at 11:00 — my guess is that the lights are usually turned off then; maybe on a timer. Someone noticed and got them back on.

  23. Saddam Hussein has repeatedly violated sixteen United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs) designed to ensure that Iraq does not pose a threat to international peace and security. In addition to these repeated violations, he has tried, over the past decade, to circumvent UN economic sanctions against Iraq, which are reflected in a number of other resolutions. As noted in the resolutions, Saddam Hussein was required to fulfill many obligations beyond the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Specifically, Saddam Hussein was required to, among other things: allow international weapons inspectors to oversee the destruction of his weapons of mass destruction; not develop new weapons of mass destruction; destroy all of his ballistic missiles with a range greater than 150 kilometers; stop support for terrorism and prevent terrorist organizations from operating within Iraq; help account for missing Kuwaitis and other individuals; return stolen Kuwaiti property and bear financial liability for damage from the Gulf War; and he was required to end his repression of the Iraqi people.

Yep, Bush rushed into Iraq on the slimmest of intel.

At least he didn’t call us racists. That should count for something. But the night is young.

  32. Thank you, Mr. Bush..

‘From Ghazi Air Base in Pakistan, the modified MH-60 helicopters made their way to the garrison suburb of Abbottabad, about 70 miles from the center of Islamabad. Aboard were Navy SEALs, flown across the border from Afghanistan, along with tactical signals, intelligence collectors, and navigators using highly classified hyperspectral imagers.

After bursts of fire over 40 minutes, 22 people were counted, and five were killed. One of the dead was Osama bin Laden, done in by a double tap — boom, boom — to the left side of his face. His body was aboard the choppers that made the trip back. One had experienced mechanical failure and was destroyed by U.S. forces, military and White House officials tell National Journal.

Were it not for this high-value target, it might have been a routine mission for the specially trained and highly mythologized SEAL Team Six, officially called the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, but known even to the locals at their home base Dam Neck in Virginia as just DevGru.’

  33. And in Germany the Spiegel, FOCUS and Tagesspiegel, among others, are going utterly nuts!

    Why?

Killing Osama violated international law! The laws of war! AND! Of course, also Osama’s human rights.

Now the German Green party wants to negotiate with the Taliban.

  34. #23 David

That “slimmest of intel” was confirmed by the German BND, the French intel service and the British MI6. Slim, eh?

  35. There may not be any body to show, but I absolutely don’t believe Ø could find even one SEAL, much less 40+ special ops personnel, to maintain silence after risking their lives simply to maintain a fiction which would make the community organizer appear in a positive light. Every one of these MEN has more honor in their nail clippings than the entirety of Ø, joey hair implant, the current cabinet & all the ‘czars.’

  36. Of course, political considerations had no role in the timing of the raid and pettiness none in the timing of the announcement . . . . /s/

Especially the latter – when was the last time a major White House announcement was timed for release late on a Sunday evening? Such an odd ‘coincidence,’ having it happen at *just* the right moment to disrupt Trump’s TV show, eh?

Ø is *SUCH* a petty, spiteful, petulant bucket of rancid snake oil.

  37. We should be thanking Donald Trump. He’s been hammering away at Zero and making him look like a wuss. Zero was forced into taking action instead of waiting until closer to next year’s election.

  38. I have to agree with the first part of what ‘akjhefggw0v6857uyt’ said.
It simply isn’t true that “Obama Knew OBL’s Location Since August”
They traced the courier to that location in August. And as
‘akjhefggw0v6857uyt’ stated he wasn’t just simply voting present.

  39. I for one believe that Obama and his “PR” team intentionally delayed this operation to use it for political gain when the chips were really down (sinking in the polls, etc.) and gave the execute order when a shot in the arm (campaign) was most needed. He may have played this hand too soon though.

That and the fact that I’m sure they were trying to find a way to bring him here for trial (showboat trial); drag out the proceedings to stoke emotion and gain favor with the public in an effor to boost credibility pre-election.

All this will be forgotten soon enough as the details come out, gas and food prices continue to rise, unemployment stays up or increases, inflation rises, Obamacare and taxes take root, etc. etc., etc.

  40. By mid-February, the intelligence was solid…

Obama is always very fast when it comes to attacking his enemies, so why the delay?

  41. Stepping aside from your rancid partisanship, it took several months to *confirm* OBL’s presence there. And then he got him: something that Bush gave up on in ’05. This is what happens in the real world. That way you don’t end up invading a country for false reasons, like WMDs.

But I see you’re all still celebrating Iraq, as though that was a good idea. Idiots.

Also, Rumsfeld’s people confirm none of the intel came from torture. I know how much you like torture, but it still doesn’t work.

BTW, Romney and McCain mocked Obama’s stated strategy of going into Pakistan in 08. There’s another fact you all can hide down your memory hole.

  42. Say what you want, Obama’s approach worked without a single American casualty. You can hate the man, you can give credit to everyone else invovled, but this is his success.

  43. Enhanced interrogation techniques i.e. torture did not convince folks like Khalid Shaikh Mohammed to give up the name of their top-secret courier. Something from the AP story some of you apparently missed:

“Mohammed did not reveal the names while being subjected to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, former officials said. He identified them many months later under standard interrogation”

Mohammed revealed the courier’s nickname which is probably all he knew him by. As you may recall the Bush Administration said they waterboarded detainees to get information about imminent attacks. The “ticking time bomb” scenario was repeatedly invoked in their defense of the illegal tactics. I’ve never seen anything that says they used them to find bin Laden. Indeed there are numerous quotes from George Bush himself from December 2001 on showing him downplaying the importance of finding bin Laden as he shifted his attention and that of Tommy Franks and his staff to the invasion of Iraq.

It took years of the kind of detective work by intelligence agencies that Dick Cheney and George Bush derided during the 2004 election campaign to figure out who this courier and his partner were. Those intelligence agencies finally working together with each other and the military, something else the Bush Administration never accomplished, were finally able to figure out who they were, connect them to the compound, and deduce that it was likely bin Laden’s hideout.

A minor point, nowhere in the article Malcom cites does it say Osama’s security guards were shooting at our men as they rappelled down ropes from hovering Chinooks. All reports I’ve read say we apparently got the drop on them and the shooting didn’t start until they were on the ground.

His and your snide attitude aside this was a great victory and morale boost for the United States, something we all could use in these tough times and seemingly never ending wars. I’m happy and proud we have such professionals working up and down the chain of command these days including a president who focuses on the job at hand and follows thru to get the job done. Didn’t always see that with Bush as his lost interest in bin Laden underscores.

  44. Bottom line, Obumunist did it for purely political reasons thinking it would make him popular. Rasmussen has already noted that he did not receive his perceived “bounce” and he won’t. It has been reported that over 5 MILLION unemployed will run out of benefits this week. That means that they will have no means to pay the raising food prices, gas prices and either house payments or rent payments. Do you really think those people give a rat’s a$$ about OBL being eliminated but yet are expected to look forward to NOTHING are going to think of The Won as a hero? You decide!

To make matters even worse, the fact that the livelihood of 10s of thousands of Americans have been not just removed but destroyed by the fires in Texas, the tornados in the Southeast and the coming floods in the Mississippi River Valley. These areas are farm and ranch land – they produce FOOD.

The residents of the USA are on the brink with the value of dollar decreasing on a daily basis (28 year low) and the lone person responsible for the mess is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The man is bent on “transforming” America. It will be transformed alright – into a bankrupt third world communist hellhole (think Cuba, Venezuela) all because as he states, the “rich” are not taxed enough. I really don’t think that is going to endear the Obomunist to the electorate come Nov 2012 no matter what the loony left wants to believe.

By the way, as a child in Minnesota there were large populations of loons that lived in the sloughs (equivilant of swamps in the South). They also have a very difficult time achieving flight and are known for sticking their heads under water for long periods of time.

  45. Obama is the worst kind of politician. He waited until his poll numbers were so low, he needed to pull a rabbit out of the hat to try to save him. Notice that the press is all but giving him a purple heart for giving the “green light” for the operation. But that’s ALL he did. Finding the terrorist monster was because of Bush giving the green light for enhanced interrogation, which as the KEY to finding him.

  46. Andreas #34, the Dem-left here would be saying the same thing if this had played out while Bush was in office. They would have demanded a civilian trial with ACLU lawyers. That’s what their “justice, not vengeance” slogan meant when it came out just after 9/11, and why they said a military tribunal was not fair enough to KSM.

  47. #46 says “nowhere in the article Malcom cites does it say Osama’s security guards were shooting at our men as they rappelled down ropes from hovering Chinooks. All reports I’ve read say we apparently got the drop on them and the shooting didn’t start until they were on the ground.”

Oh, golly, that makes it all better then. I guess that means they weren’t really as brave as the Great Lord Obama who had the nerve-wracking experience of watching from his very tense situation in the White House. After he cut his golf game short. What a guy.

  48. #46: “Those intelligence agencies finally working together with each other and the military, something else the Bush Administration never accomplished.”

So Obama magically made the agencies work together after Bush didn’t let them? You’re really reaching on that. Apparently you don’t know about Obama’s cutbacks and restrictions on our intelligence-gathering capacity. And you don’t remember how the Clinton administration put of The Wall between intelligence and law enforcement that permitted 9/11 to happen.

Obama’s claim that getting Osama was a top priority doesn’t pass the smell test. He jumped on the case at the last minute because a process that began several years ago was being worked out to its completion by people much more serious and courageous and accomplished than he.

  49. Killing Hasbeen Laden merely confirms that our sons and daughters in uniform are the finest military the world has ever known.

Unfortunately, we have the 37th best economy in the world, created by federal government that ranks just above Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela.

  50. Apparently OBL was a victim of premature assassination.

More confirmation that BO knew OBL’s whereabouts since last fall.
