Pakistan Denies Harboring Bin Laden in Safe House; Neighbors Say They Were Unaware of OBL’s Posh Hideout

Osama bin Laden was killed in Abbottabod, Pakistan. It is the home of the Pakistani military academy. OBL’s compound was across the street from a police station and the government military college.
Today Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari insisted that his country’s security forces were not harboring Osama Bin Laden in a safe house.
The AP reported:
Pakistan’s leader denied suggestions that his country’s security forces sheltered Osama bin Laden as Britain demanded Tuesday that Islamabad answer for how the al-Qaida chief lived undetected for six years in a large house in a garrison town close to the capital.
But in a nod to the complexities of dealing with a nuclear-armed, unstable country that is crucial to success in the war in neighboring Afghanistan, British Prime Minister David Cameron said having “a massive row” with Islamabad over the issue would not be in Britain’s interest.
A day after U.S. commandos killed bin Laden, reporters were allowed within the 15-foot, barbed-wire-topped walls of the compound for the first time. But the doors of the house were sealed shut and police were in no mood to open them.
Local residents showed off small parts of what appeared to be a U.S. helicopter that Washington said malfunctioned and was disabled by the American strike team as they retreated. A small servant’s room outside the perimeter showed signs of violent entry and had been briskly searched, clothes and bedding tossed to the ground. Its wall clock was on the floor, the time stuck at 2:20, when the U.S. team would have been on the ground in the early hours of Monday.

Frightened neighbours say they had no idea that the man living in a three-storey villa hidden behind barbed wire in a leafy, well-to-do Pakistani town was the world’s most wanted extremist.
To kill Osama Bin Laden, US forces raided not a remote cave but a secure compound on the fringes of Abbottabad, a summer escape considered one of the safest cities in the northwest and home to the Pakistan Military Academy.
“I did not have the slightest idea what was going on,” said local resident Waseem. “It is a very quiet neighbourhood, the most peaceful area.” Ejaz Mahmood, a tailor, said he heard a blast in the early hours of Monday and “saw a fireball coming down from the air”.
Residents were stunned when they switched on their television sets after daybreak to hear US President Barack Obama announce that Bin Laden had been killed in their hometown. “We were depressed,” said Mahmood. “We are worried about the safety of our city. It has become the focus of world news.”

Pakistan hosted Bin Laden for 5 or 6 years adjacent to their version of West Point, as I understand it. That must mean they consider him an honored military commander, sort of a general. Perhaps he helped with the academy’s curriculum on terrorism.
And now we feel free to put boots on the ground 30 miles from the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.
Yes, it is a just cause, but is it smart? I’m not saying yes or no. I just want a more public conversation and less busloads of astroturfed college students whooping it up in for the press.
How do we expect Pakistan to respond?
The map of the Middle East grows thick with countries we are at war with. In addition to the usual wars in Iraq and Afg, there is now Libya. We’re already in a shooting war with half the Middle East and going around deciding who should stay in leadership roles and who is a “dead man walking.”
Yes, I’m glad he’s dead. But there are questions to be asked. As ever, the problem is the liberal press and it’s neurotic obsession to propel Obama to the skies.
Take the Truthers. They were real useful when Bush was running the war, but now…not so much. Remember:

You really think that such a subject has to go through normal DNA testing like in regular crime labs or when trying to find out who’s the daddy? Seriously?
If you have the lab and team ready, just waiting for that one sample, it can be done within a few hours.
As for Pakistan…

I have been waiting for someone to observe the obvious. Bin Laden’s digs have been described as ‘posh’ and ‘a mansion’ but from the outside they look like a shabbily converted two-car garage.
No doubt we’ll see interior views in upcoming days. Unless they show something utterly unlike the exterior, we should re-evaluate. Bin Laden was once a playboy-turned-fanatical-terrorist with a family fortune and plans to wrest the Saudi throne from its decadent royal family. He died a refugee afraid to leave his low-rent hovel in a third-world hellhole.
News reports – often unreliable at such an early stage – say that some of bin Laden’s entourage were captured during the raid. They will fill in those last ten years. I suspect we will discover those years to be impoverished and difficult.

We will never know the 100% truth. But for sure someone in the Pak Military estab. knew. bin Laden’s mansion was huge and 3 stories – tall, two protection walls, one 7 foot the other 12 foot. The military had to have asked themselves, ‘ What is this?’
