How’s that hopey-changey stuff treating you?

(King Politics)
Thanks to Obama’s failed economic policies the kids can’t find a job.
85% of college graduates are moving back in with mom and dad.
TIME mag reported:
The kids are coming home to roost.
Surprise, surprise: Thanks to a high unemployment rate for new grads, many of those with diplomas fresh off the press are making a return to Mom and Dad’s place. In fact, according to a poll conducted by consulting firm Twentysomething Inc., some 85% of graduates will soon remember what Mom’s cooking tastes like.
Times are undeniably tough. Reports have placed the unemployment rate for the under-25 group as high as 54%. Many of these unemployed graduates are choosing to go into higher education in an attempt to wait out the job market, while others are going anywhere — and doing anything — for work. Meanwhile, moving back home helps with expenses and paying off student loans.

Who is more to blame, the shiftless kids or the weak-willed parents who created the shiftless kids?
Sure, things are tough out there (thank you, idiot leftist politicians), but things have been tough off and on throughout history. Today’s “yoots” need to stop whining and leeching, move out of mommy and daddy’s basement, and go get jobs. Any jobs, not just the perfect ones they seem to be waiting for.
They need to do what kids in past generations did when things were tough, and just do what has to be done. And parents need to give the kids a swift kick in the nethermost region.
Good grief. We’ve become a nation of wimps, whiners, and crybabies.

Our company hires college seniors to do marketing intern work for minimum wage so that they can get some much needed real world experience. One yute told me that his friends were all in ‘panic mode’ because there are NO JOBS for graduating seniors. He wasn’t exagerating. Not one of the kids he knows has a job after graduating. Not one.
Somewhat Reasonable Voice commented:
Bet the computer science grads have jobs.
Mommy and Daddy create these yutes and their attitudes. Then allow them to leech some more after their degree in basket-weaving III is won. Business admin/management, communications, psych, etc, etc. These degrees amount to nothing more than a completion of what should have been learned in H.S. with some icing.
Join the service, flip burgers, etc. Do something! Or are they going to “hold out” for a management position?

#9 indccc: You’d better check your information. In the precinct where I served as a poll-watcher in 2008, I was required to show documentary proof from my political party that I had been so appointed. Other parties could also send poll watchers, but no more than one from each party could be in the room. Citizens who came to the poling place to vote were, of course, allowed to do so, but they were not allowed to loiter inside the poling place.

I would not hold my breath that these basement dwellers have seen the light. The only “light” they see is the one the basement switch turns on that mom and dad pay the bill for.
All of my children have been pretty much self supporting after high school. All are college grads. We helped out some but they got loans, grants and schollies to pay for school and they majored in marketable degrees. They are now completely self supporting and vote Republican cause they know the truth and they don’t fall for every dem sob story or talking points. They can and do think for themselves.

I have three college kids that all have jobs but it is touch and go with the recession. Interesting change in attitude occurs about 4 years after full time employment and paying income tax, social security, medicare, sales tax and various fees. They turn conservative and believe that with less social support systems, welfare, more people would get a job . and quit being takers
RedBeard commented:
Most graduates, although not all in this lousy economy, could find jobs if they really wanted them.
The whining kids who go around saying there are no jobs at all are actually saying that they won’t lower themselves to take jobs that are “beneath” them. Or they’re saying, “Life is too hard! MOMMY!!!!!”
Mannie commented:
Last year, a f(r)iends last kid moved out. My comment was, “Demolish his bedroom. Turn it into a sewing room or a reloading room. Fill it with ferrets. Anything so he can’t move back into it. If he comes back home, he can use the Army cot in the garage.” And I like the kid.
Sasja commented:
Spider, I rather doubt that. As a Bible thumpin’, gun totin’, Country lovin’ bumpkin, my kids were taught self respect, self-reliance, private (mommy and daddy) or public dole is bad, and that good old American hard work is the way to succeed. They bussed tables, worked construction, whatever it took to help pay their way through college. Ultimately, it is their responsibility to become productive members of society and they understood that anything less was not acceptable. They all work, have families, volunteer and are going to be happier when that devil in the WH is gone.
Mark1957 commented:
And yet these same 20 year olds are so indoctrinated into the liberal mindset that they will vote for “Dear Leader”. Remember when Al Gore told a group of students not to listen to their parents because the kids knew what was best?
Want to really help your kids tell them no when they ask to move back in, force them to see that there will not always be a handout waiting for them, that self reliance and hard work is the solution.

I cannot and will not speak for others. I am a prior U.S. Marine, have a MS in Engineering, and cannot find a job. I’ve never asked for a dime for school. I’ve been unemployed for seven months going on eight. When I did have a job, I was making less than what I would have made as a salesman at Home Depot (which I’ve since applied for). I am moving back to my parents at the age of 31. Lighten up on these kids that are moving back in! Be thankful you have a job. Not all of us are lazy burnouts! It is still tough to find work.

Hey, there may be some out there that are lazy, shiftless, worthless degrees, etc. but not in our case. Our daughter graduated with a BSN, quickly obtained her RN license in CA and has been diligently and repeatedly applying for the few new grad jobs out there–in CA, WA, and AZ. I am witness to her efforts. She has gone coupon crazy to help out at the house, cleans and runs errands, has taken continuing ed classes to maintain her edge and helps her sister care (married and working) for her daughter. All of this and she doesn’t sit around feeling sorry for herself (too much), Oh, BTW, she also volunteers in our large church to help care for special needs kids in the nursery during services. She is an adult living in our home giving full court press to finding a job. (she also obtained RN licenses in WA and AZ–applied to VA jobs which are nationwide–is not medically qualified to be in the military. So, you tell me that help from the family isn’t keeping her from the street). We’ve talked about paying this forward, sometime in the future she’ll be able to help someone else in need.

I was talking with a well-off man whose daughter is graduating from college this year. We both found out that we’d graduated in much better times and still had to struggle to find jobs. So, I suggested that they consider encouraging her to spend a year traveling in Europe, where they have a tradition of doing so, and rail passes and hostels to help. She’d come home more self-reliant, and maybe more interesting to employers, and maybe to a better market.
Sometimes, it’s better to just duck.

I consider this my watch. I’m a grownup, and I am at a nexus in my career. Two years ago, I moved from Maryland to California, and I’ve been watching the politics of my new state with amazement.
There’s really not much wrong with California, and the state legislature is capable of fixing it. They need to pass a right-to-work law, and they need to find some way to bleed the volatility out of the state income stream.
This state is greatly affected by our national government, which has foolishly taken its economic policies from the dustbin of history, to the point that economically literate people point to an old, turgid book with a plot that “could never happen here” — Atlas Shrugged — as a script for the present headlines.
This is my watch, and I intend to help rein in this nonsense.

We have all kinds of job openings in the healthcare industry (including nursing) in Oklahoma. There has to be some other reason why someone with a nursing degree is unable to find a job. You are telling me AZ, CA, WA do not need nurses? Maybe they just aren’t paying enough to suit your daughter.
greenfairie commented:
Not all of these kids are slackers or people who got degrees in Chicano Queer Basket Weaving Theory. You can’t pay rent, food, utilities, gas, etc. if you’re graduating with $50,000 in debt and jobs are hard to find. Most entry level jobs don’t pay very well and when times are desperate, you are competing with older and more experienced people who had been laid off from their jobs, and are willing to take entry level. I know because that’s what it was like when I graduated from college in 1991.
The problem is you have a glut of people (the baby boom echo), a poor economy where McD’s is doing most of the hiring, and most college graduates carrying a boatload of debt, mostly from student loans. The people who worked part time through community college are strangely enough the lucky ones. They probably don’t have the debt and are already better established in the workplace.

I am 43 and not a college grad, I had to move in with my parents because I cannot find a job that I can support myself with. I decided to go back to school and get a degree. Hopefully by the time I graduate BHO will be gone and this non-sense will be as well?

My son is a full scholarship athlete at a private military school. Electrical engineering major.
No summertime schlub jobs to be had, those already in the workforce had to take these to support thier families. This is Jimmy Carter redux with zeros on the end. At least my son can go into the military and the five years at school (red shirted), count as time served in the military. I am highly recommending he go into the military for the fifteen years and retire at 39 years old and alot of experiance. Then he can compete in the labor pool.

IIts too bad the useless hopey changey youth didn’t get jobs because then they would have seen, for the first time in their lives, what kind of deductions every employed person sees on their paycheck, such as income tax, social security, Medicare, health insurance, city head tax, etc.
Most college kids are liberal not only because the profs are all libs, but because they live in a world of isolation from the economic reality everyone else lives in.
Now that they can’t find jobs after voting for Obama – J U S T I C E!
RedBeard commented:
There’s another factor at work here. Too many kids (not all, just to clarify) these days are being pushed into college instead of deciding they really want to do so. Choice of a major then becomes little more than a crap game, resulting in bad student/career matchups, or worse, the aforementioned goofy degrees in useless things like Comparative Literature of Minority Women’s Art History. When they finally do graduate, in debt, unmotivated, at loose ends, the lukewarm search for jobs becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Not everyone needs a degree.

This is a major ‘tell’. It appears that we’ve been right about college – 85% of college degrees are worse the worthless.

During one economic downturn, I worked for… um… let’s call it MegaMassiveInternationalConglomerateCorporation, Inc. I was interviewing candidates for a junior customer service position. One applicant had a Masters, and my first thought was that he would be a terrible fit due to being way over-qualified.
As it turned out, he was one of those college grads who wasn’t too good to accept a job beneath his educational level. At that point, in a bad economy, he wanted work, period. So I hired him. Terrific guy, great worker. He got a paycheck, while other grads never bothered to apply.
I’m sure that any number of college grads looked at the job ad and decided not to apply at all, preferring unemployed status.
cdubbs commented:
These new grads better get wise quick! If you follow hiring trends, the new thing in hiring is “unemployed need not apply”. Companies do not want to take on someone who has been sitting on their behind as the world goes by. If you are laid off, take any job. You may lose some money in the unemployment compensation, but you will get back on your feet sooner than someone who decides to sit this one out.
Moving home with mom & dad? When I was coming up it was just accepted that when you graduated HS or college you moved out on your own. No hard feelings, but adults got their own place to live. Didn’t matter if it was a $50 a month room in a ramshackle house somewhere, it was yours that is what mattered. Yes I had the cinder block bookcases, lawn furniture in the living room, sheets for curtains and lots of macaroni and cheese. But it was mine. There was a huge amount of pride in doing that and making it finally into your own house and carrying a mortgage.
I feel bad for college kids these day who don’t get it. If things every really really get bad in our country, these little lambs are going straight to lambchops.
chuck in st paul commented:
@26 Otto5687 first, thank you for serving.
Secondly, all I can tell is that this is Jimmy Carter redux. The only advice I have is ‘go where the jobs are’. Sometimes that means overseas jobs with/as a contractor. After my military service I still wound up working a long way from family and friends in order to get a decent job (in electronics). Good luck with your job hunt.

Obama has 1 1/2 yrs to get as many people addicted to welfare as possible, so he is intentionally killing the US economy. Only a welfare addict or Union thug would even consider voting for the Moron. wanumba commented:
This is a convergence of a number of factors … engineered by the Progressive LEFT over the past 40 years. Thus, it’s a deeper and more comprehensive mess than just a bad economy.
The radical Left took over the schools, put in deconstructing curriculum, intentionally screwing with logical thinking, problem-solving, and actual facts. Academic achievement began its slide, but the Left pressured the ONCE independent national testing services into dummying down the tests to hide the decline as Leftist Unions chased out actual teachers with competencies and enabled the insertion of unqualified drones by the use of “facilitating” as the operative word rather than “teaching.”
Parents are made up of “could care less” or care in the wrong way “My baby gotta be No 1 in EVERYTHING” or “care, but are easily cowed by school “experts,” and parents who “See something’s wrong, but don’t know exactly what” and the smallest group, parents who are responsible for their childrens’ education, taking the time to know their child, know what they need.”
Schools now very adeptly work this state of parenting: they manipulate exams to produce the highest grades possible. The old days, the teachers used to write up their own exams, now exams are part of the curriculm package – done by teams who mass-produce exam booklets – and a close inspection reveals an inordinate amount of hinting to coerce successful GUESSING. Teachers offer open book exams, provide the exam in its entirety AHEAD of the exam, including reviewing it in class the days before the exam, and actually COACH the students thru the questions DURING exams. This produces higher grades that IMPLY a competency.
The schools have LONG figured out that NO PARENT will demand a teacher conference if Junior has an A.
But the fail is exposed on the national exams, so STATES run their OWN exams with scholarship inticements, encouraging students to stay around and go to STATE universities. The As are WORTHLESS. The schools are defrauding the students and their parents – an institutionalized fraud, from teachers to textbook publishers, curriculum developers and “independent testing.”
AMERICAN High schools now graduate illiterates with practically non-existent math, science or literacy competencies. The transcript LOOKS great, but it’s fiction.
Students THEN hit the universities and ARE NOT EQUIPPED TO DO UNIVERSITY-LEVEL WORK. SO, the university, larded with greedy Progressive Leftists, which are SOLELY MOTIVATED to GET THAT LOAN MONEY, signs ‘em up, and offers junk courses to keep them IN to keep that LOAN MONEY COMING IN. They ALSO offer resort-quality amenities like jacuzzis, food courts, recreation centers and elaborate massage-providing student hang-out areas, PLUS now “limo services” and an array of dorm luxury options that would make Hilton proud. WHile other nations require 3 years to a Bachelors, the USA somehow NEEDS 4 yars – the first year is studies that should have been achieved in HIGH SCHOOL.
Many state universities are Logan’s Run worlds unto themselves – behemoths that inexorably spread outwards, full of non-essential secondary services.
Students graduate with DEBT, an airhead degree and an enhanced resort-like expection of their personal living standards.
The PARENTS at any time during this elaborate and RICO-like coordinated FLEECING from Pr-K to B.A. could have sat down and done the math, been a bit more suspicious of “everyone’s above average here” claims, paid attention to what their kids were bringing home and demanding their school provide PROVEN results curriculum that produces internationally-competitive graduates, and DEMAND their children who want to go to college get practical degrees that translate to jobs.
Students in other countries spend LESS TIME in school work and are two – three years AHEAD of their AMerican counterparts – using a curriuclm and teaching that was the NORM in AMERICA 50 years ago, BEFORE THE DRUG-ADDLED LEFT infiltrated the education sector and CHANGED IT. Our schools are perversely EXHAUSTING our students for NOTHING. A rising number can’t even make it two years thru a low-expectation university – no degree, but two years of debt!!
Now, we have too many of one graduating class after another with inadequate skills, and frustrated, because they COULD have them, hitting a job market that the REgessive LEFT has destroyed, and graduates are not equipped to compete even outside the USA in the multinational job market.
This is NOT easy to fix. An entire generation of parents does not know what a solid curriculum looks like and are easily fooled to accept bells and whistles, a generation of students has never had any actual exposure to real teaching, they have NEVER had it.
A society cannot pass on what it has lost.
pjean commented:
You must realize that this situation will just perpetuate the liberal mindset that “someone will always take care of you”. We’ll have to wait even longer for these students to grow up/wake up and live like responsible and productive adults.

So, they cannot find a job and move back to the parents. What do they think we did in the same situation? Mom and Dad are the responsible people, still. When I graduated from HS, I moved out of the house, took a dead end job, rented a room, and went to school…to ensure that I would not need to remain in the dead end job. I was glad to have it…it payed my bills and my education. This is the beauty of our Country, you need not remain in the level you were born, you can move with motivation. Sorry to say that I see these grads as whiners, not Go Getters. As long as the parents continue to support them, they will never grow up. Yes, we had two children who graduated from college and took care of themselves. We taught them self-reliance. A question off topic, why are the DEMS and left so miserable all the time?
Jerry M commented:
They fell for the incompetent con artist in the White House and are now paying the price. As a college professor, I witnessed first hand the euphoria of the young airheads on our campus when Obama was elected. This might turn out to be a more important learning experience for them than their four years of brainwashing by the far left professors that populate much of academia. It recently came out that young African Americans are experiencing the highest unemployment rate since 1972. Their messiah has failed them miserably as well.
