Obama’s EPA Pays to Upgrade Mexican Trucks So They Can Enter US

The fact that Obama’s EPA is punishing US industry with a slew of new business-killing regulations is one thing… The fact that Obama’s EPA is paying the Lung Association to defeat Republicans is somethnig else… But, this takes the cake… Obama’s EPA is upgrading Mexican trucks so they can travel and do business in the US.

Corruption Chronicles reported, via Doug Ross:
In the latest effort to accommodate its cherished trade partner in the south, the U.S. government is paying to upgrade outdated Mexican trucks that hemorrhage illegal amounts of exhaust on their trips north to deliver merchandise.
The Mexican trucks enter the U.S. under a 17-year-old international trade pact known as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and they’ve created an air pollution crisis. The air quality in border towns has been especially impacted by the exorbitant levels of exhaust released by the Mexican trucks, which also fail to meet American safety standards.
Since the Mexican truckers have no intention of fixing the problem, Uncle Sam has stepped in to save the environment. U.S. taxpayers have picked up the cost to replace old mufflers on dozens of trucks and many more are scheduled to be upgraded by the middle of this year. The unbelievable story was reported this week by an Arizona newspaper that says replacing the old mufflers with new catalytic converters will reduce harmful diesel emissions by up to 30%.
This radical government agency is doing all it can to destroy US business but they’re helping Mexican truckers?… Something is terribly wrong with this administration.

The Mexican trucking industry that crosses into the US is getting US green, just like a Brazilian company getting a gift of 2 Billion in monies for the oil industry. A company that George Soros is heavily invested in.

If you read the original news article you’d know this is actually a State of Arizona program, not a Federal program. The money is coming from a pre-existing EPA block grant, not any Obama program.

All vehicles imported to American must meet the EPA and highway safety rules. All aircraft operating in the US must meet ICAO standards which are mostly FAA standards and/or EU standards (very high on safety). The owners are required to have their vehicles comply or get them out of the country. The US does NOT pay for these upgrades.
So tell me again why the US is paying for this!!??

I’d like to know where the article’s writer got their information. I work as a title and permit agent for the trucking industry along the California/Mexico border. You think the EPA is bad – you should see what California Air Resource Board is doing to the industry in California (INCLUDING trucks that enter into US from Mexico). All of the programs assisting with retrofit in California REQUIRE that the trucks are owned by a US company. The trucks entering from Mexico are subject to the same inspection standards as those from the US, must pass through Mexican customs, then the facility with US Customs and Border Protection but also staffed by DEA and FDA. Every trailer coming through is x-rayed. Then they pass down a dedicated road to CHP Inspection where they weigh on in-motion scales, and must have quarterly inspections. The DOT also inspects there. They are not getting a free pass, by any stretch. The CARB mobile units park themselves at the CHP compound and inspect whomever they like. They can put a unit out of service and they face fines of $1,000 and more if found noncompliant. The truck cannot get renewed license plates to operate unless the unit is repaired and the fine paid. If found to be operating with a noncompliance “Stop” on record, the unit can be seized and sold.

No American trucker likes to go into California with statutes covering trailer to tandem wheel length (max 40′), clean idle (when most companies prohibit excessive idling), and insipid 55 mph speed limit. ReasonTV has a video about California diesel particulate regulations that will go into effect in a couple of years. It features a guy who owns a small trucking business. To be compliant, he will be required to either replace his trucks or replace the mufflers with new, approved ones costing $15,000 each. In view of the above, I’m sure Mr. Whitney would be interested in knowing who will be paying to put those mufflers on the Mexican trucks wanting to enter California. As would I.

Rock, I read the two articles you cited but have not found the source of the information, only a lot of rhetoric and opinion. I want the SOURCE (EPA or FMCSA release or leak) that states the facts, not someone saying what they think EPA is doing. I’m not defending their reported actions, just need to study the facts. You may be interested in the FMCSA release today regarding the new demonstration project for Mexican long haul loads into the US and vice versa. There is a 43 page document with the requirements that must be met, along with the history. Check it out.

I guess it never occurred to the EPA, customs or the border patrol to simply not allow these vehicles to enter the US unless they are in compliance with our laws. That is a burden on the truck owners, not the US taxpayer. Vehicles on US soil and not in compliance should be impounded and the owners fined.

Look into this history of this before you speak. Bush is the one who lifted the moratorium on Mexican Motor Carries and thus let Mexican trucks into our country. This case (The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Clean Air Act (CAA) in the Case of The Department of Transportation et al v. Public Citizen et al.) said that the DOT did not have control over emission standards because they could not control BUSH from allowing trucks in the country. The North American Free Trade Agreement was signed by Bush Sr. which committed the US to allowing Mexican trucks into the United States. We are now dealing with the mess that the Bush administration left us. At least the EPA is trying to do SOMETHING about the pollution since they can’t ban Mexican trucks because Bush committed America to allowing them to use our roads.
