On Monday Barack Obama told reporters in Chile that Gaddafi needs to go.

But, that was yesterday.
Today Barack Obama told reporters that Gaddafi can stay.
Politico 44 reported:

President Obama indicated on Tuesday that Muammar Qadhafi may still have an opportunity to “change his approach” and put in place “significant reforms” in the Libyan government.

Asked by NBC’s Savannah Guthrie what the U.S. commitment is in Libya if Qadhafi remains in power but continues to pose a threat to his people, Obama appeared to leave the door open for political reforms.

“You are absolutely right that as long as Qadhafi remains in power, and unless he changes his approach and there are significant reforms in the Libyan government that allow the Libyan people to express themselves, there are still going be potential threats against Libyan people—unless he is going to step down,” Obama said.

His quick shift back to what he had earlier stated—that Qadhafi must step down—is more in line with the conclusion that he and his administration officials had come to weeks ago. But a return to the call for “political reforms” is reminiscent of the White House position on Egypt during its upheaval.

It’s settled then. Gaddafi can stay… Until tomorrow’s press conference.

So now he thinks he’s speaking on behalf of the rebels? Obama is beyond clueless.

  16. I don’t see how anyone can discount what a huge cluster phuk this is going to be. France and Great Britain have oil at stake, but us? Nada. Yeah, Qdaffy blew up a jet liner 20 years ago, but he has been sitting pretty ever since with no president willing to go after him.

For the claim of Obama being such a brilliant Constitutionalist, he sure seems to know little about the authority granted him by that document. Where was his speech before the U.N., his speech to Congress or his AUMF declaration from Congress?

There is no good way out of this mess Obama has gotten us into. First: we don’t even know who the hell the Libyan rebels are. Some reports are they are being fueled by Al Qaeda. If we leave Qdaffy in power, nothing changes. If we take Qdaffy out, that can only be done by ground troops from the U.S. And if the rebels are an arm of AQ, what the hell are we doing fighting Qdaffy troops to allow the rebels to take back territory? Are we now in the business of helping our enemies?

What a mess. And we will pay for it via our taxes and American blood and treasure will be spent because Obama is a clueless oaf.

    Yes.

‘WikiLeaks cables, independent analysts and reporters have all identified supporters of Islamist causes among the opposition to Col Gaddafi’s regime, particularly in the towns of Benghazi and Dernah.

An al-Qaeda leader of Libyan origin, Abu Yahya al-Libi, released a statement backing the insurrection a week ago, while Yusuf Qaradawi, the Qatar-based, Muslim Brotherhood-linked theologian issued a fatwa authorising Col Gaddafi’s military entourage to assassinate him.

The WikiLeaks cables, initially revealed by The Daily Telegraph and dating from 2008, identified Dernah in particular as a breeding ground for fighters in a number of causes, including Afghanistan and Iraq.

“The unemployed, disfranchised young men of eastern Libya have nothing to lose and are therefore willing to sacrifice themselves for something greater than themselves by engaging in extremism in the name of religion,” the cables quoted a Dernah businessman as saying.’

‘Well known to the United States policymakers in Obama White House and Clinton State Department along with the National Security Council but not widely known to American mainstream media, the U.S. West Point Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center document reveals that Libya sent more fighters to Iraq’s Islamic militancy on a per-capita basis than any other Muslim country, including Saudi Arabia.

Perhaps more alarmingly for Western policymakers, most of the fighters came from eastern Libya, the center of the current uprising against Muammar el-Qaddafi.

The analysis of the Combating Terrorism Center of West Point was based on the records captured by coalition forces in October 2007 in a raid near Sinjar, along Iraq’s Syrian border.

The eastern Libyan city of Darnah sent more fighters to Iraq than any other single city or town, according to the West Point report. It noted that 52 militants came to Iraq from Darnah, a city of just 80,000 people (the second-largest source of fighters was Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which has a population of more than 4 million).

Benghazi, the capital of Libya’s provisional government declared by the anti-Qaddafi rebels, sent in 21 fighters, again a disproportionate number of the whole.

If the 2007 captured records revealed the Eastern Libyan participation in the anti-coalition forces militancy in Iraq one could imagine the Banghazi-Darnah export of Islamists since then.’

  39. Harry Kovaire commented:
    “Gaddafi can stay…
    Obama must go.”

I agree fully with this. We dont’ know who the rebels are; they may be religious fanatics who want to implement Sharia law for all we know. A dictator is better as he can always be bribed by money or by threats.

Regarding Obama: we know everything we need about him and he must go.

[Gaddafi’s son, Khamees, is transporting Black African mercenaries from a military base in the town of Tajura (20 km east of Tripoli, Libya). Gaddafi’s six sons are each in charge of a battalion controlling the foreign African mercenaries. The mercenaries came from many African countries such as Chad, Guinea, Niger, Somalia, Ethiopia, Mauritania, and Sudan to crush the Libyan citizens’ resistance to Gaddafi’s brutal dictatorship. The narrator says (translated from Libyan-Arabic): “These planes are going to Fashloum. The planes are coming now (a reference made to the attention of Al-Jazeera TV channel)… They are going to crush our Libyan sons. This is the second squadron that passed by. These (the planes) are filled with mercenaries. They came from Khamees’ (one of Gaddafi’s sons) battalion in Tajura.”

Reports say some west African newspapers advertise “Men Wanted for Tough Tasks”. Under the general guise of ‘hard work’, the West African mercenaries to travel to Libya to fight and kill the Libyan citizens. The foreign African mercenaries are promised payment of $2,000 per day. Al-Jazeera TV channel reported that approximately 150,000 foreign African mercenaries are present in Libya. As of February 23, 2011, it is estimated that 50,000 mercenaries are present in Tripoli under the leadership of Gaddafi’s several sons’ private battalions. This continues to happen while world governments permit it.]
