You’ve heard it before… All Obama statements come with an expiration date. All of them.

In 2009 Barack Obama told reporters that the US cannot simply impose democracy on another country.

“The message I hope to deliver is that democracy, rule of law, freedom of speech, freedom of religion — those are not simply principles of the west to be hoisted on these countries. But, rather what I believe to be universal principles that they can embrace and affirm as part of their national identity, the danger, I think, is when the United States, or any country, thinks that we can simply impose these values on another country with a different history and a different culture.”

But, that was in 2009.
Today Barack Obama told Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey that the US intends to impose a democracy in Libya.
The Washington Examiner reported:

The White House is shifting toward the more aggressive goal in Libya of ousting President Muammar Gadhafi and “installing a democratic system,” actions that fall outside the United Nations Security Council resolution under which an international coalition is now acting, according to a conversation between President Obama and Turkey’s prime minister.

Obama and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke late Monday and “underscored their shared commitment to the goal of helping provide the Libyan people an opportunity to transform their country, by installing a democratic system that respects the people’s will,” according to a White House report on the phone call.

The rhetoric matches Obama’s reiteration on Monday that it is still U.S. policy that “Gadhafi needs to go.”

But it is a marked contrast to the U.S.-led military mission as defined by the U.N. resolution.

  1. the problem is that the american voter puts up with this hypocrisy. as long as people continue to vote for politicans that talk out of both sides of their mouth this will not stop. a politican that says one thing one day and the opposite on another day has no convictions. they telling people what they want to hear to get votes. once they get elected they whatever the hell they want. if we had an honest media instead of a politically biased one that might help.

  2. Do as I say not as I do….. In other words screw you I Won WTF and you lost and I am smarter than you and I have locked all my academic records tight as a drum to prove it.

Now move along I have a golf game to get in before the dinner date night and a concert I am on my vacation you know. Not like I get one more than once a month !

  3. I believe we are being too hard on Obama. He should be rewarded for his consistency. Since he does exactly the opposite of everyting he promised it’s easy to see where he will stand on any important issue. Therefore, when a tough issue appears look to his campaign promises on the subject and expect him to actually do just the opposite.

    It’s actually that easy!

  4. Tommy, O’Dimbulb is making it up as he goes along. He’s an idiot. He has no idea what he is doing. He’s a moron. He shoots off his mouth, then later when he’s committed himself to something completely foolish, he does an about face. He has no one advising him that has an i.q. over 82. But they all are geniouses.

  8. During the campaign, and in response to a series of questions posed by Charles Savage, editor of the Boston Globe – candidate [and esteemed constitutional scholar and professor of Constitutional Law] Barack Obama stated, without equivocation, that “The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.”

  11. I do agree with the commenter who said that O is predictably inconsistent; he has a pattern of doing the exact opposite of what he says. We’ve all caught on to that by now.

The larger issue here, though, relates to how 2012 is lining up: I’m convinced that his anti-war base will forgive him anything, so his strategy with Lybia is to cleave off the neo-cons from the Republican Party. Neo-cons are democracy exporters and nation-builders who have little patience with the social conservative wing of the Republican Party.

And the Republican Party, being led around by the nose by its establishment faction, will act with dispatch to ensure that they present a nominee for president who can keep the neo-cons in the camp: that means a social liberal; that means we are doomed.

  12. I had a dream that Obama was overthrown, convicted of treason and publicly executed. I actually had that dream.

  13. Ah, yes. Smart Power in action.
    Mmmm…Mmmm…Mmmm…

  14. That’s my dream too, patman.

  15. Is this nightmare ever going to end?

  16. #14 patman: I’d like to amend your dream to include that BOTH obamas were convicted and executed. I hate Michelle as much or more than effete little barry.

  17. Imposing democracy on countries that have been dictatorships is not a bad thing. I would rather live in a democracy than a dictatorship, and I’m sure most people would too.

Obama is not being inconsistent, because the US and its allies are not imposing a democracy on Libya. They are enabling Libyans to determine their own future. When Libya becomes a democracy, it will be because Libyans have transformed their country from a dictatorship to a democracy.

  18. Senior: The only democracy that the Libyans will want is one that ensures Islamic dominance. I thought everybody knew that that is where this is leading? Under Sharia, btw, there can be no true democracy and that permits Western-style freedoms.

  19. “Expiration date” I don’t think so. Expiration can be calculated exactly–often on the fingers.

“Half life” is a much better measure–some are quicker than the timely Pu233, some appear to exceed H1.

But with respect to any givin atom, it is a crap shoot.

  20. “Imposing democracy” doesn’t always work, since “democracy” enables the “populace” to elect “terrorists.”

FBI chief confirms ties cut with U.S. Muslim group

[In stunning testimony on Capitol Hill, the head of the FBI explained
his agency has cut off ties to the most influential Muslim organization
in America due to concerns over its leaders' association with terrorism.

Since the Justice Department linked the Washington-based Council on
American-Islamic Relations to a 2008 terror-finance case, the FBI has
refused to work directly with the group's national office or any of its
    30-plus chapters across the country.

Wednesday's hearing held by the House Judiciary Committee marked the first
time FBI Director Robert Mueller has narrowed down the cause of concern to
    CAIR's "national leadership."

"We have no formal relationship with CAIR because of concerns
with regard to the national leadership," Mueller testified.

CAIR's current executive director is Nihad Awad.]

    CAIR Officials Sought Gaddafi Money

[According to an account of the meeting in a Libyan news website, Awad was joined by two other leading CAIR officials in praising Gaddafi's leadership and asking him to help underwrite a program to distribute 1 million copies of the Quran to government officials and the general public in America and to help start up a new foundation Awad was trying to launch.

    [..]

“But we always hold our views on the principles of justice and human dignity very straight,” Awad said on WPFW radio in Washington, D.C. “We never received a penny from his group, from his government. And in fact when he started abusing and killing civilians we condemned him and we support the international community’s effort to restore justice and peace to Libya by protecting civilians. We’re very, very principled when it comes to these matters.”

The United States and other Western governments were not as principled, Awad said. “We should not wait until these regimes collapse so that we stand with the people who have been oppressed by these people … Our foreign policy has to be aligned with our values, the values of equality, justice, freedom and all these things that we always try to spread around the world and democracy. So when we see an oppressive dictator persecuting his people, killing his people, if this is on the news we speak up. But if it’s not in the news we ignore it.”]

‘Democracy and political Islam can’t coexist’

[Of the last 220 arrests by the US Department of Justice on terror
charges, Jasser notes, more than 180 of the suspects were Muslims.

“You have 1.5 percent of the population
that is over 80% of the arrests,” he says.

“And the arc has been increasing.”

Rather than remain on the defensive, Jasser says, the US and the West at
large must take a muscular, offensive approach toward promoting the ideals
of liberalism. Those who say democracy and political Islam can peacefully
    coexist, he says, are ill-informed.

“They don’t understand democracy. My devout Muslim parents and
grandparents understood Sharia. They understood that Sharia, while
it means God’s law, is actually man’s law – once it is implemented in
any fashion, it becomes man’s law.”

Democracy, Jasser says, means more than
elections; it means protection of the individual.

“We need to start having a conversation about what exactly we mean
by democracy,” says Jasser, a firm proponent of what he refers to as
    “separation of mosque and state.”]

I think that I will stay over here and avoid going to the beach over there in Tripoli this summer. Florida seems to be a safer choice for spring break or summer fun this year.

Why do we call it “political” Islam? That is a deceptive term that would make George Orwell giggle. Politics as a way of getting things done by securing the agreement of other people. Politics is founded on a certain respect for the rights of others. “Political Islam” has nothing to do with respect for others lives, much less their wishes.

It’s a bunch of murderers and thieves trying to pretend to belong to Islam for their own purposes. We should call it “Killing Islam,” or “Blasphemous Islam,” or “Perverted Islam” or maybe “Tyrannical Islam.”

It sure as hell doesn’t have anything to do with God or Allah. Maybe we should call it “The Lord of the Flies Islam” or “Liar’s Islam.”

Amazing. This is a fact that leading theologians have never understood and yet you state it so concisely. Please explain how this mystery can be, but in simply terms that the ‘ignorant tribesmen among us’ can understand.
