The Obama Administration won’t send the military to rescue US citizens in Libya.
They don’t want to look like war-mongers.

Stranded: An estimated 600 U.S. citizens are stuck on board the Maria Dolores (pictured) in Tripoli, and won’t leave until at least Friday (Daily Mail)
The Obama Administration is STILL grappling with whether or not to send the military into Libya to rescue US citizens.
CNN reported, via HotAir:
The senior U.S. official also said the “prudent planning” for military options centers around the president’s priorities of protecting U.S. citizens and interests and stopping the violence against Libyan civilians. He cautioned against thinking the U.S. military “was about to storm the beaches,” but he also declined to specifically rule out the use of military force.
So far, the State Department has not requested the U.S. military to assist in the evacuation of civilians from Libya, which would be required for the military to get involved in that operation.
Several U.S. officials have confirmed to CNN there is a vigorous debate inside the administration about whether to involve the military because of concern it could cause further provocations by the Libyan regime.
UPDATE: They charted the wrong boat. It was too small!

Social Security is safe in a federal shutdown
By Charles Riley, staff reporterFebruary 24, 2011: 7:05 AM
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — What happens to Social Security if the government shuts down?
“People don’t get their Social Security checks.” That was President Obama at a press conference last week
And this is Harry Reid, the top Democrat in the Senate, in a statement on Tuesday: “A shutdown could … mean no Social Security checks for seniors.”
The Democrats are saber rattling, hoping to portray Republicans as irresponsible. And the claim has been repeated by other top Democrats.
Here’s the rub: It doesn’t appear to be true.
During the last major shutdown, which lasted about a month starting in late 1995, the Social Security Administration mailed checks throughout the crisis, and a close reading of established law makes clear the agency has the legal authority to do so again.
“I am absolutely sure the checks would be sent out,” said John F. Cooney, a partner at law firm Venable who designed shutdown plans for the government while employed at the Office of Management and Budget.

She said, “Why do you continue to report?”
WOMAN: I will tell you something. The Libyan public are angry from the statement was given by President Obama today. Everybody was disappointed.
RUSH: Oh, no! CNN goes over hoping to find a lot of love for Obama in the Arab world, and they didn’t find any. “The Libyan public are angry from the statement given by Obama today. Everybody was disappointed.” Cooper says, “What? You think he didn’t go far enough?”
WOMAN: No. I was expecting him commenting about the black people and the European — Eastern European people — recruited to contribute in this massacre. It’s nonsense. I thought that he gonna give even threats or warning for this to stop. I expected more, to be honest. I expected to read between the lines from his speech. I did not see that. What in the world does this gobbledygook mean? If there’s an “unstable military presence,” then we’re not supposed to use our armed forces to protect our own citizens? Why? Because Libya might attack our carrier battle group or our Marine Expeditionary Unit?

It’s full-face hand them over or bombardment starts at 9 am. Stupid liberals don’t even “get” it that most of the time no one gets killed and all the hostages are instantly released. From the end of a primed cannon, holding a lit taper, Commodore Decatur even demanded per diem payments for each hostage for each day in capitivity and got it in 1816. Amazing how well people cooperate with death hanging over them.
Our military should be up front NOW evacuating our citizens. The Libyans are quite OCCUPIED with OTHER matters. The cold-hearted, incompetent Democrats will have blood on their hands if they dither and whinge and spend their time crapping their pants instead of using our national resources in the US military to remove Americans from harm’s way.
About ten years ago, President Bush quickly sent US troops to rescue American children at a boarding school in Ivory Coast that was caught in the cross-fire of rebel forces. It was an AWESOME feeling to have when seeing our military roaring in to evacuate those students. What Obama is doing is making people feel sick with fear that he just doesn’t care about human beings, not even his own felow citizens.

I certainly know how the American Armed Forces have operated in the past in relation to a whole host of issues. The point is, and as I pointed out earlier, you can’t just use reactionary military force because you have a military, as missions require at least a minimal amount of planning. But to that end, the modern American Right thinks that the Obama administration should have already laid out plans for what could possibly happen 13 months, 1 week, and 21 hours from now in South America. I know that will likely sound odd to many of you, but that is precisely how you all think, that Obama should have some psychic ability and be able to predict all type of potential situations on the world stage and react with lightning speed.

Iraq is a democracy that no longer poses a threat to the U.S.
The awakening began when U.S. Marines and Army officers contacted Sunni insurgents and asked them if they were willing to turn against al Qaeda.
The de-Baathification process was insisted upon by the Shi’ites and Kurds, who make up about 80 percent of the Iraqi population. It was unavoidable.
No stockpiles of WMD were found, but for some reason hundreds of artillery sites had massive supplies of insecticides, which have the same chemical makeup as the banned WMD.

Airon probably hates all Americans, anyway; dumb rednecks, donchaknow, not worth helping. . .
His political position is, and probably always will be, Obama is all-perfect, and can do no wrong, Amerikkka is evil and it doesn’t matter who gets hurt, long as the Left comes out on top. The “Revolution” and all that. .. blah, blah, blah, you’re all RAAAAAAACIST, AND STOOOPIT, HALP, CHE GUEVERA!” Over and out.

Heh, Airon. . I see what you are only too clearly.

Rhinestone Suderman commented:
Airon, Obama is the president.
Isn’t it kinda his job to lay out plans about South America, the Middle-East and all the rest of the world—especially if, in the case of the Middle-East, that place is now a hot spot of riots and insurrection and hatred for the U.S.? I mean, c’mon, like he shouldn’t have been concerned about American citizens there from Day One?
(Oh, yeah, sorry; I forgot; OBAMA CAN DO NO WRONG! JUST SHUT UP AND STOP CRITICIZING HIM! Okay, Fearless Leader, viva la Revalucion, and all that.)
Wm T Sherman commented:
Still can’t get them out?
This really is starting to look intentional.
Rhinestone Suderman commented:
How is it “over simplification” to say that our nation should rescue its citizens, stranded in a hostile foreign country? Do you really think it’s a good idea to leave them there, so they can all get killed, or held hostage by a government trying to wring concessions from America?
(No, no, that’s just CRITICIZING OBAMA! YOU MUST NEVER, EVER, CRITICIZE OBAMA! Sorry, I forgot. . . )
Rhinestone Suderman commented:

#108 smacks of taqiyya as I’ve come to understand it. No explanations, no actual rebuttals, just evidence of a game of “outwitting” for an audience.
Muslims and Leftists use the same “debate” technique, though leftists are largely unaware of this fact. Muslims call it taqiyya. Taqyya is a well-honed tactic used in public debates that relies less on logic and reason than it does on semantic tricks. Leftists don’t call it anything, they just naturally do it the same way the Muslims have been trained for centuries to do it. There is a reason for this seemingly coincidental use of the same “playbook” — they both come from the Devil, master of deception.
Muslims teach and practice taqiyya, to the point where it becomes an “artform”. Leftists just have it “in them”. It’s in their nature. Both have the same Father.
Wm T Sherman commented:
Quo vadis?
Why are they being stranded there? Every other outside country has gotten its people out, including China, which is not famous for worrying about the well-being of its citizens.

According to Oliver North we just don’t have any military capabilities in this part of the world. For the first time in some 30 years we do not have an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranian Sea, and it is rapidly becoming the Med-Iranian Sea.
Rhinestone Suderman commented:
Taqiyyotomost, I think it’s also the Left/Alinsky thing, i.e., when you have no real arguments or rebuttals, just start slinging insults, and accusations.
He’s also trying the shift-the-goalposts trick, trying to change the subject of the discussion to Booosh the evil, Iraq and American foreign policy in general—anything to keep us from asking why our government can’t rescue 600 of its own citizens, who have been left hanging, with only a too-small ferry boat to come their (uncertain) rescue.
Gini commented:
The difference between G.W. Bush and Obama has never been stronger; Bush gave up golf as he thought it reflected poorly on him to play whilst we were at war, Obama threw a bash last night at the Wite House for Motown whilst Libya boils and American citizens are not evacuated due to his total incompetency.
I’ve said it a thousand times but repeat, Obama is more than a disaster, he is dangerous!
Rhinestone Suderman commented:
Sherman, I’m not sure exactly what the purpose is, though I’m beginning to suspect it’s intentional. (They didn’t know to get a boat the right size? Come on. . . )
It could be that he’s more concerned about protecting Islamic sensibilities, than he is our citizens? If 600 Americans have to die, so Moslems won’t feel threatened by the US presence. . . so be it! (His thinking, not mine.) It could be, he’s hoping to intervene militarily, maybe on behalf of his buddy, Qaddafi (who has ties to his old pastor, Jeremiah Wright.)
If it’s not intentional, then the only other answer is stupidity, and incompetence; Obama supporters can take their pick.

Moving the goalposts is one trick of many in the practice of taqiyya. There are many others that everyone here should be familiar with: shifting definitions of terms — or outright refusal to accept any common definitions of terms (such as “communism” and “socialism”) (e.g. “Those countries you mentioned weren’t really communist, or weren’t really socialist, so obviously you don’t know what you’re talking about); accusations of racism or sexism; going completely off-topic in order to derail the debate; tu quoque (“you do it too”) with no sense of perspective, nor of scale…..
…and many, many more.
Here is a fairly well-written, though by no means exhaustive. guide to Muslim taqiyya. See if you can spot similarities (uncanny, at that) between Muslim taqiyya and Leftist debate tactics.
http://www.citizenwarrior.com/2007/10/taqiyya-religious-deception.html
The practitioners rely on distortion of language and definition, and on semantic trickery. In the absence of logic, reason, facts, and truth, it’s really all they have.

I don’t know, but the whole thing is starting to look deliberate. This thing has been going on for some time, they couldn’t get the Americans out long before this? (And Obama took 9 days, to make even a mild statement about it?)

Arch, you really shouldn’t pretend to be so ignorant. Or are you pretending.
But as to you question regarding Americans abroad, there is no simple answer. Military force is an option, but there are consequences to that. But there’s an underlying reality to this that you and just about everyone here aren’t considering – why are they there to start with? Are they “missionaries”? Are they aid workers? Are they on vacation? But the one thing that keeps resonating when I read questions like your directed at any member of the American Left is that it reveals your inability to formulate your own plan in favor of complaining about ours.
Arch commented:
In answer to your question, I am but a poor simple soldier, unable to match wits with anyone as educated and knowledgeable as you.
To answer your question: I don’t care why Americans are in harm’s way, what they are doing there, or even who they are. Do you believe we should only pick up our embassy staff?
Is there a military option? I don’t see a carrier task force in the Med. Why is that? I see no evidence that we are loading up an airborne brigade at Ft Bragg. No word of an marine amphibious assault force departing Hampton Roads. What is the military option?
What is your plan?

Wasn’t it Bill Clinton who told Ted Kennedy that “a few years ago, Obama would have been serving them coffee??” I think Clinton had an accurate view of Obama’s “pay grade” at that point. General Colin Powell would have made a much more effective president than President Urkel and Co.
Rhinestone Suderman commented:
Airon, you seem to be hinting that it’s all the fault of the Americans, for being in Libya in the first place. Blame the victim?
Basically, you do seem to be saying that we should just leave them there, because there will be “consequences” if we try getting them out, and, you know, they might really be awful people, like—gaspe, shudder, aieeeee!—MISSIONARIES!
(Hand me my smelling salts, I feel faint—”Missionaries!” “Missionaries” with scare quotes, yet!)
(In short, appease, appease, appease, and the Moslem world will love us!)
Actually, the answer isn’t complicated at all, though you try to make it so; a nation that can’t, or won’t, protect its own citizens, wherever they are, is finished—washed up, kaput, ended, nada. Getting our own people out of hostile territory? Not complicated at all.
(But, Obama clearly doesn’t want to do that, AND OBAMA IS ALWAYS RIGHT! SO JUST STOP CRITICIZING HIM, YOU AWFUL RIGHTWINGERS!)

I certainly don’t blame the Americans that are there, which is exactly why I ask the question that I did – and it drew out the answer from some of you that I expected. Recently Jim Hoft blamed Laura Logan for what happened to her in Egypt; that she shouldn’t have put herself into that position. People here went absolutely ballistic that this was pointed out for what it was, which was quite predictable. So now that I have posed the same question to you, you take up the position that those of us on the Left took up in consideration to Logan.
But as far as a plan, there is a very good reason to determine why American are on foreign soil, as a diplomatic solution could be the best option. Just last year, Clinton and Carter secured the release of American from foreign countries using diplomacy. And while this situation in Libya may not lend itself to a pure diplomatic resolution, I think that it should at least be on the table.

Gee, Airon, what a swell plan! A diplomatic solution!
Uh, a question. . . who, exactly, do we negotiate with? Qaddafi has vanished, and is on the run. Various groups of gunmen are rampaging across Libya at the moment; which one shall we negotiate with? Do we even know which ones have any control over foreign nationals, at the moment? Or, maybe, we should just flip a coin!
But, first, let’s stand around twiddling our thumbs, deciding why the Americans are there, and if they truly deserve any help! That way, the gunmen can have plenty of time to kill them and/or take them hostage, creating another Iranian hostage style Jimmuh Carter fiasco.
Again, a country that does not protect its citizens is finished, dead, kaput.
Or, I know! Let’s call in the UN! Hey, they’ve done such a bang-up job so far! And—HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!—as another poster pointed out, Qadaffi’s on their human rights commission! Maybe they’ll do something really effective—like condemn Israel for something or other!
