In late 2010 Joe Manchin released an ad painting himself as a gun-toting conservative who was ready to repeal Obamacare and vote against cap-and-trade.
Of course, it was all a lie.
Liberal democrat Manchin voted for Obamacare last week with the rest of the democrats.
Creating Orweillian World View reported:
In a 47-51, party line vote with two Senators Lieberman (CT) and Warner (VA) abstaining Democrats proved that there is no such animal as a Conservative Democrat.
The utter failure of the Republican Party’s ability to politic like Democrats in order get votes from the other side notwithstanding, not one Democrat voted to repeal Obamacare even if their constituencies demand its repeal.
Sen. Claire McCaskill (MO) voted with Democrats against 71% of her fellow Missourians who cast ballots against Obamacare last August. Sen. Ben Nelson’s (NE) state is 2-to-1 against Obamacare yet he voted with Democrats blocking Obamacare’s appeal.
Joe Manchin represented himself as a conservative to be elected Senator of West Virginia over his Republican challenger John Raese. West Virginians now know that had they elected a Republican they would have been one vote closer to repealing Obamacare. (see article)
Of course, the fact that a liberal democrat would lie through his teeth in order to win an election surprises no one.

Actually, this was the special election to fill Byrd’s seat. He’s up for re-election in 2012. This will still be fresh on voter’s mind how he stood with Obama.
jomojava the infidel commented:
Why is this a surprise?
It’s the Democrat version of taqiyya.
In most cases, they could never be totally honest about who they are/what they believe and still get elected.
Gimme a Break commented:
The problem with WV is that the Republican party is really weak. Other than Shelly Moore Capito, the GOP has trouble finding strong candidates. They keep trotting out a Raese or Warner every few years and keep losing to a Kleagle, Munchkin, or Rockadollar. Maybe Capito or new District 1 Congressman David McKinley will emerge as a legitimate challenger to No-Show Joe in ’12 but it’ll be tough.

Another easy mark (WV) for Democrats and they proved it.

Manchin can keep voting with Obama and still get reelected. All he has to do is run an ad a month before the election with him holding a gun and saying he’s a con-ser-vuh-tive and his Republican opponent is a plutocrat and he’ll win handily.
West Virginians are stuck in 1936 when it comes to party affiliation.
Beef commented:
Democrat’s ability to lie about their positions in order to get elected is a function of their control of the media. Republicans have to run on who they are and put up with false smears. Democrats can run on who they have to be and will have any unpleasantries ignored by their allies in the press.
OnTheOtherHand commented:
He only said he would repeal the “bad parts” of ObamaCare. Didn’t anyone ever think to ask him what he considered the bad parts? That ad sure left weasel room. Had he a savvy opponent, they might have tried to get him on record as to what those “bad parts” were (of course, no one had read it). Otherwise, they just vote for the candidate who repeats the talking points they want to hear.
If we keep allowing these fluffy mean-what-you-want-to-hear phrases to charm us, the next thing you know, we’ll have a progressive in the White House.
Betsy Ross commented:

Hell, there aren’t too many conservative Republicans.
templar knight commented:
I’m not going to criticize my friends in W. Virginia, as years and years of voting patterns are not easily disturbed. I live in Arkansas, and this past election finally broke the backs of the Democratic Party. And it took years of hard work to do it. We(and I mean the Republican Party) have just about reached parity with the Democrats in state officeholders, and that is the key to long-term control, not the national officials.
What we found to be the major problems in Arkansas probably apply to W. Virginia. Political dynasties and political connections favor the Democrats, the Democrats have tons of money compared to Republicans, and the old media are all pro-Democratic. It’s tough, and takes a lot of hard work to win.
Our Senator from Arkansas, Mark Pryor, also voted with his fellow Democrats. I talked to his office the day before the vote, and they told me he hadn’t made up his mind, which told me that he would vote not to repeal. The day after the vote we started to work on defeating this guy, and it’s an uphill battle. He wouldn’t have voted for the bill had the polls shown it to be dangerous for his reelection. So, we have called a meeting of the local TEA Party and the Republican Committee, and are ramping up the pressure. We will see where that goes.
Oh, yeah, as an aside, Mike Ross, the only Democratic Representative left in Arkansas, was one of three Democrats who voted to repeal Obamacare. We didn’t win that race, but we turned Mike Ross into a conservative again, at least for now. Suffice it to say we are watching him closely.

The current GOP leadership is useless.
John Lee Pettimoore III commented:
Another item that needs closer attention is the Dem vote in the House. Reps like Shuler of NC who voted no on Obamacare passage have recently voted AGAINST repeal. These need to be defeated as well in 2012. Shows me again what the blue dogs really are. As I always thought, they vote against the party only when it is convenient to do so, and most times I think with the party’s blessing. Now that they have been re-elected they vote right down the line with the liberals. The blue dogs are CINOs, conservatives in name only.

In the case of WV, as Beef has pointed out, it is because they want to vote for them. Or to put it another way they DO NOT want to vote for the “Party of the Rich.” Which is one very big reason there are few conservative R’s. They see the kind of abuse the Palin’s and Bachmann’s take and say no thanks.

12A scoundrel and villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13who winks with his eye,
signals with his feet
and motions with his fingers,
14who plots evil with deceit in his heart—
he always stirs up dissension.
15Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;
he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.
16There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

I have to call BS on a couple of statements you made.

Huh? Does the name Blanche Lincoln ring any bells. Pryor is completely delusional if he thinks he’s not in trouble.

I’m sorry Mr. Holt, but I just don’t understand the relevance of this posts headline: “Liar Joe Manchin Votes For Obamacare…”
Exactly WHEN did you expect the liberal progressives, communists or socialists to start telling the truth about anything? Uncle Joe Stalin, Chairman Mao, James Carter, Obama and Fidel Castro – they each define truth as a variable substance, pliable to their own needs of propaganda. After awhile even the most sluggish would seem to understand that these intellectual perverts cannot be trusted with even the most foundational nor fundamental tidbits of truth.

Blanche Lincoln isn’t a good example, as she almost lost to an obscure, and in my opinion, nutty Democrat in the Democratic Primary. And she hardly had the name recognition or connections the Pryor family has in the state of Arkansas. And I should have said, Pryor wouldn’t have voted as he did if he perceived it would cost him the election. I’m not disagreeing with Pryor being delusional, just pointing out how he felt about his vote, at least in my opinion.
Good point on Mike Ross, I suppose, but obviously he wouldn’t have voted to repeal Obamacare had he not been pressured by the results of the last election. He was always good in some areas important to conservatives, such as hunting and gun rights, immigration reform, and a few others. But don’t worry, we are trying to line up someone to run against him as we speak. He will either vote conservative or he will face another serious challenge in 2012. Or maybe both.

Mike Ross’s average lifetime rating with the National Taxpayers Union is 18. To put this in perspective, Mike Castle’s average rating over this period (01 – 09; results aren’t in yet for ’10) is 50. Mike Ross may temporarily vote MORE conservatively to get reelected, but he is and almost certainly always will be a statist.
templar knight commented:

I certainly wouldn’t argue with the rating of the National Taxpayer’s Union, and I complelely agree that any votes he makes that are conservative are due to political pressure. It’s certainly not in his nature.
