It’s like expecting Aztecs voluntarily to give up human sacrifice and instead vote for the sun to come up. The essential philosophical architecture for supporting a democracy simply does not exist in primitive belief systems of this nature. Muslims in Egypt serve as “human shields” to protect Christians

[Egypt's news organization Ahramonline (Facebook) reported that Muslims showed up at Coptic churches to help by acting as "human shields," with famed Muslim Mohamed El-Sawy explaining, "We either live together, or we die together."

Movie stars Adel Imam and Yousra were among the human shields as were thousands of citizens who believe Islamic attacks on any one group in Egypt are attacks against all of Egypt. Reportedly, millions of Egyptians changed their Facebook profile pictures to the image of a cross within a crescent – the symbol of an “Egypt for All.”]

    Trust the Egyptian people

[The United States can save face by calling on Mubarak to announce that he will not seek reelection in September. If we continue to be portrayed as supporting the Mubarak regime, I fear that we are providing fodder to extremists who have continued an attempt to co-opt the protest movement. Ultimately, our government may be setting the stage for the worst-case scenario in Egypt - the rise of an Islamist government in Egypt.

Protesters in Egypt are not burning our flag or Israel's; they are burning images of the dictator Mubarak. If we fail to stand in solidarity with what has been primarily a secular uprising, America's lack of support for change will be touted by Islamic hardliners.

The ACLJ works very closely with Coptic Christians in Egypt and America. Our European affiliate has engaged the United Nations and Council of Europe on behalf of Coptic concerns. This is not Pakistan. In Egypt, at a minimum, 10% of the population is Christian. When we discuss Copts in Egypt, we must remember that this is a substantial religious minority.

Based on every conversation I have had with Copts in the last few days, Egyptian Christians have joined the protests, defying the instructions coming from the Pope of the Coptic Church.

Following the terrorist attack on a Coptic Church in Alexandria on New Years, Copts protested. The protests were aimed at Mubarak and the Egyptian government, not Muslims. Remember that Muslims protected Coptic Christians during their Christmas service on January 7.

It is the Mubarak government that until 2005 required any new church construction in Egypt to have presidential authorization. Egyptian authorities relied on an 1856 Ottoman law. Mubarak's "revolutionary" reform was transferring authorizing power to Egypt's governors in 2005.

Christians and Muslims are uniting in Egypt. Reports of chants like "Muslims, Christians, we are all Egyptians" have been heard all around the world. Certainly, these Christians understand the risk of what a Muslim Brotherhood-led government replacing Mubarak would mean for them. It is a risk that, by all accounts, they are willing to take.

After all the talk from President Obama about a new relationship with the Muslim world, we appear to fear a predominately secular Muslim uprising. Will we stand with a dictator or stand with the people of Egypt?]

i have been with the people 110% from the get go, not the US Government. nor their plans for Egypt.. there is a huge difference.. the people’s way is FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY (whatever that means to them) , the Obama’s et al Administrations way is control & slavery via taxation.. of course all will be done under the guise of “social justice”..

  16. JB: That’s better than non-dictatorships like India. And democracy is an excellent start on the way to a better educated citizenry.

  17. How much truth is in this story? The reason I ask is in an OT story:

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/30/ib-man-arrested-terrorism-case/

It turns out that the man arrested in the plot to bomb a mosque in Detroit, Roger Dale Stockham, widely described as a “Vietnam Veteran,” but he is also a convert to Islam with a history of violent acts and treatment for mental illness.

I submit that he may not have come up with his crazy ideas on his own. When I moved to San Diego, I found local weekly papers that trolled for military veterans, offering counseling and pot.

Somebody has been trying to locate vulnerable people with a history of being in the military, with the intent of giving them the drug made famous for producing assassins. I doubt that this effort began the year I arrived in this locale.

The hirabists have a documented history of using threats against the family, force, guile, animals and people who are mentally vulnerable to produce atrocities against Muslims in Muslim countries, all for the purpose of producing propaganda. There is no reason to eliminate that possibility in the investigation of this crime.

  18. Why can’t we support Mubarak? He is supposed to be this “brutal repressive dictator” but the theatre on the ground has not played out this way. There has been no military hostility to surpress the crowds. Any police brutality has been condemned. The barbarism is with the mobs looting and burning. Mubarak has cancelled a succession to his son. Replaced numerous officials. His offers to negotiate have been refused. What this boils down to is El Baradei and the muslim brotherhood demanding to USURP power and take hold of the largest military in the region to wage war on Israel. …AND OBAMA SUPPORTS THIS !

  19. donh: The police brutality you say was “condemned” was the order of the day under Mubarak. That’s why Mubarak was evil. He killed and tortured his own people.

The military, however, is not the personal police of the president, and they have made their allegiance with the demonstrators.

Mubarak was not the legitimate ruler of the people. He was a 30-year authoritarian who arrested and denied representation to the political opposition. That is why the opposition will not “negotiate” with him. He must leave. He is not legitimate.

  20. The Hagarines are chanting: “Oh America and Israel … you people of evil.” Wow. We’d better get al-Bammie on Air Force 1 immediately and fly him over for some more hopey-changey shuck-n-jivin’. I don’t think the first time took all that good…

  21. hey Not a Hypocrite maybe you should talk to women that live in Islamic controlled countries like Iran & ask them how that is working out for them, their odds were much better under a dictator than under Sharia

  22. The muslims in Egypt should ask Iranians how they like living under a hard-line Islamist rule before they get all up on the State of Israel and the U.S.A., because democracy is not what they are going to get but the enforcement of Sharia Law.

  23. Out of one set of shackles into another.

  24. More Peanuts Please….. It’s 1979 and I know how this show ends

    roflmao

  25. victoria_29 – great minds think alike….

  26. bg – I pray you’re right. I too was encouraged when the Muslims stood with the Coptic Church, denouncing violence against Christians. The Coptic Church here in Houston has organized protests against Mubarak’s government and his lack of leadership in the protection of the Egyptian people’s right to worship.

God help everyone in Egypt and I pray for a peaceful transition to that of a representative government that is democratically elected and an end to all corruption, government and otherwise.

  27. Victoria: Assuming by sharia you mean the radical interpretation of it, of course that is bad for women. But the old Iran regime basically slaughtered everyone but the most die-hard opponents, the islamists who were the only ones left. That has not happened in Egypt. Iran is due for another revolution anyway.

  28. Any middle eastern leader who does not satisfy the thirst for jewish blood becomes a ” brutal authoritarian who arrests and denies representation to the political opposition.” Where is the proof that Mubarak has ordered a slaughter of the mobs and the army is being kind to the mob in rebellion to Mubarak? The army could be gentle to the mob following Mubarak’s orders because Mubarak is not this evil monster Obama wants you all to believe.

  29. BO could be a HERO for publicly asking Mubarak to

    1. Announce that he will step down upon the innauguration of a new leader after a thorough and fair process.
    2. Announce a national discussion period (very like in Iraq) about what the people want in the way of a new government (constitution? election of representatives in the present form of government? election of an organizing body to select a new form of government?), followed by
    3. A period of organizing the political body that will decide how elections will be held, and
    4. Elections to be held at time set by that political body.
    5. He should state how long this actually took in Iraq, and respectfully ask them to consider this as some sort of practical guidance for their expectations.

He should offer US advice on this while specifically stating that the American military will have no military role in this and that advisors with experience in Iraq might be offered in a consulting role only, not to provide security. The Egyptian military is perfectly capable of providing security.

He should thank Mubarak for being an allay and a person of good will who has kept the peace and brought some improvement to the lot of Egyptians, acknowledged our fears of radicalism and a bad outcome like in Iran, where a dictator that attempted to modernize his country but whose internal policies were not well-advised, was replaced by a far more oppressive and unsuccessful regime. He should admit that a good result is not pre-ordained, but that the Egyptian people are capable of governing themselves, and are worthy of our help and good will.

He should mention that the Egyptians have many relatives living in the United States, who are good citizens, and we know that the Egyptians in Egypt are also as capable of determining their own fates as those in America, given the chance.

And he should say we ask for the blessing of the Creator, who some people call God, and some people call Allah upon this effort, and for peace to all people of good will.

    [The Later Assassins

The passing of Hasan-i Sabbah did not end the threat of the Assassins by any means. In the following millennium, his heirs claimed the semi-divine status of Imam themselves, and their followers spread to Syria where they fought with the Crusaders and the Knights Templar.

They roamed further afield, to India and even to that ancient graveyard of armies once again in the news, Afghanistan, and were remarkably transformed in the process.]

Egyptian Muslim leaders asked Muslims to go to church [1/07/11]

[After the bombing and the ensuing riots, political experts, politicians,
commentators, opposition leaders and average citizens said that the
very steps taken by the president in the name of stability — including
preservation of an emergency law that allows arrest without charge
    — had produced a state with weak institutions, weak political parties
and a bureaucracy unable to resolve the social, political and economic
    problems that helped cultivate extremism.

“It is very clear that the government totally lost control — of everything,” said Muhammad Aboulghar, a professor at Cairo University medical school and a liberal activist. “The only control they have is on the security of the president, the group around him, and few other party figures. That’s it.”

But for all the criticism it unleashed, the blast appears to have forged a consensus that Egypt, despite its historic tradition of moderate Islamic thinking and multicultural tolerance, has in recent years become overwhelmed by fundamentalist religious identification, a position that until now the government strongly denied.

That view has reinforced the growing belief that President Mubarak was not ready to surrender the reins of power, people here said. Mr. Mubarak underwent surgery in Germany last year, and appeared frail for months afterward, leading to speculation about who might succeed him. But people who have recently met with him said that he appears to have regained his strength and seems to have no intention of giving up power. ]

This indicates to me that the anti Mubarak sentiment, however real, was a facade behind which hid the Islamist elements, The Moslem Brothers, and the ‘clerics’.

Just a quick footnote, Al Azhar university is where Obama blathered out his “It was Islam – at places like Al-Azhar University – that carried the light of learning through so many centuries, paving the way for Europe’s Renaissance and Enlightenment.”!

    mini flashback

[The leaders of Coptic Christians, whose community is facing growing persecution in Egypt, say they have been unsuccessful in efforts to gain a hearing from the White House or other parts of the Obama administration.

Heightened persecution of Egypt’s 12 million Christians coupled with growing power and prestige of their Coptic Diaspora in America and Australia is leading to new political efforts here. Educated and skilled Egyptian Copts who migrated in large numbers in recent decades are talking to Congress, organizing lobbies, and making other efforts to be heard.

They say they are frustrated by the current administration in Washington, particularly after President Obama’s overture to the Muslim world via a speech at Cairo. In the speech Mr. Obama President apologized for America’s misdeeds to Muslims, stating that he came “to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world.” Coptic leaders say that even while reaching out to Muslims the administration has turned a deaf ear to the pleas Arab Christian minority in the very country where he delivered his apology to Muslims.

“The Obama administration’s benign neglect of Arab Christians, is putting freedoms and human rights in the whole Middle East at risk,” is the way it was put in an interview with the Sun by the president of the U.S. Copts Association, Michael Meunier, who is headquartered in Washington “Friendships with Muslims has been the Obama Administration’s opening theme from his first day in office and in that famed Cairo speech in which he extended a hand to all Muslims in partnership.”]
