Michelle Obama: We Can Use the Tucson Shootings to Teach Our Children Tolerance …Huh?

Some disturbed mental case goes on a shooting spree at a Safeway after months and years of bizarre behavior and Michelle Obama wants your kids to be more tolerant?
That’s so not right.
From the White House blog:
In the days and weeks ahead, as we struggle with these issues ourselves, many of us will find that our children are struggling with them as well. The questions my daughters have asked are the same ones that many of your children will have – and they don’t lend themselves to easy answers. But they will provide an opportunity for us as parents to teach some valuable lessons – about the character of our country, about the values we hold dear, and about finding hope at a time when it seems far away.
We can teach our children that here in America, we embrace each other, and support each other, in times of crisis. And we can help them do that in their own small way – whether it’s by sending a letter, or saying a prayer, or just keeping the victims and their families in their thoughts.
We can teach them the value of tolerance – the practice of assuming the best, rather than the worst, about those around us. We can teach them to give others the benefit of the doubt, particularly those with whom they disagree.
We can also teach our children about the tremendous sacrifices made by the men and women who serve our country and by their families. We can explain to them that although we might not always agree with those who represent us, anyone who enters public life does so because they love their country and want to serve it.

Sometimes if you jump too quickly to blame tragedies on those you disagree with, sometimes it comes back and makes you look stupid. I’d say both gunmen were just as insane, but there was no hoopla about it being the fault of the right for the gunman in Kentucky. Why decide, right from the get-go, that the young man shooting people in Safeway was the fault of the right and Sarah Palin in particular? I would imagine it was solely because a Congress woman who is a democrat was shot and so were many of the other victims. Right off the bat, the left start blaming the right, just to find out the shooter was one of their own – at least in his socialist view and admiration of mass murderers and potential ones.
Would Obama show up for a memorial for victims on the right? He couldn’t be bothered to show up for the memorial for the victims of the BP platform blast, and after attending the memorial for the victims slaughtered at Fort Hood, he turned around and put the screws to the victims’ families with the bull crap investigation of the muslim jihadist, who just turned out to be a disgruntled worker – huh! Obama takes care of his own – and anyway he can put the screws to the right or get a photo op out of it, he will.

Actually, that is not true. While the number of die-offs that seem to be occurring world wide seems unusual (which might simply be the result of a slow news day) these are pretty frequent occurrences.
I happen to be a medical scientist and a member of the American Chemical Society’s Analytic and Medicinal divisions. One thing that indicates to me that these are likely not the result of some exposure to poisonous chemicals is that all of the recent die offs seem to affect only a single species. This is particularly apparent with the fish. Any poison would have to be added to the water in which they live and so would necessarily poison all other fish in the water, not just a single species.

What about our society’s “tolerance” to accept the most outrageously anti-social criminal behavior from our most-favored identity group? Is that a good thing?! Once this activity became accepted, any effort to change it (say, by enforcing laws) became a sign of racism. If members of this group commit crime disproportionate to their numbers in the population as a whole, is it racism that they should be arrested more often or imprisoned more often? Which is precisely why they so desperately want us to be civil. Civility = not challenging authority, thereby maximizing the anonymity enjoyed by the saboteurs. What ‘rats desire more than anything else is that the sheep remain just that — unaware of what is being done to their freedoms and way of life. To my knowledge there is no evidence they ever die en masse for no reason. That the reason isn’t immediately evident doesn’t mean there is no reason. Bird and fish kills are common, and while I don’t know the reasons for any specific recent kill, I do know that birds and fish are common victims because they are individually small and more susceptible to killing forces (we rarely see mass natural kill-offs of large animals in large numbers), but they are big enough that we notice when there is a kill-off (who would notice a kill-off of 10,000 ants?), each tend towards flocks and schools which make them more vulnerable to communicable illness when that’s the cause, birds have evolved hollow bones which are lighter but easier to crush, and different species of fish have different tolerances for oxygen levels in the water, so they can be killed off as a species where another fish species lives on. Here are some of the ‘usual suspects’ in mass bird/fish kills:
Fish:
Low oxygen levels in water
Fluxuating saline levels in brackish freshwaters than join saltwaters near our shores
Communicable diseases for which different species have different tolerances
Environmental toxins, man-made and natural
Red tides and other algal blooms, fresh and marine waters
Water temp extremes
Birds:

Granny #27 – interesting point, except birds flock together as fish go to school together, so to speak. It is possible the phosgene gas was released where a particular species of birds and/or fish were present. I’ve also read it has been confirmed phosgene gas was the agent that killed the birds in Arkansas as the result of an accidental release of Phosgene, and I’ve read it happened again the next day, so this blows the theory that it can’t target just one species of birds. I can’t say what is going on, but the excuses seem a little odd – 700 doves died because they ate too much – sure anything is possible, but it is odd none the less.

Intolerant speech often starts with the phrase ‘you people are.’ You might have gone with, “why do you people the way you do?”
I would have responded that the AZ shootings had absolutely nothing to do with political rhetoric or intolerance and that it is a gross non sequitor for the First Lady and others to suggest that it does, plus it also identifies the practice of the Obamas and every leftist south of them to now say out of one side of their mouths that the AZ shooting had nothing to do with conservative rhetoric, while saying out of the other side of their mouths, “let’s talk about it as if it did.”
This is letting the Krugmans and Olbermanns of the world take the heat for the wild accusations, while the politicos make hay from the fallout without paying any proce. This is called political cowardice and I happen to despise it.

And further, the idea of being tolerant is for us as a society….we don’t know if the gunman was mentally ill or not. If he was then, certainly we don’t tolerate deranged behavior. But if he is not mentally ill and just intolerant, then it is a good thing that we ask that people teach their kids and others learn to be more tolerant.
And explaining and trying to help kids cope with the death of 9 yr old kid is a bad thing? Seriously. Dude, get real. There is no agenda here. I think she’s just seeking a better America. This country deserves to be so much better.

The students who were in some of the same classes with Loughner were certainly tolerant. I read that some of them sat as near the classroom door/exit as possibly just in case he were to lose it and they’d have to make a run for it. And one girl was so afraid of him that she quit going to the classes in which he was also a student. Those students were tolerating the intolerable for the sake of tolerance. And school is just one example of the mentally ill and scary Loughner being tolerated.
