This was disgusting.
I do not tune into FOX News Sunday to watch their host mock the Republican Speaker of the House, or any politician, for crying and smoking. I view FOX because I am a conservative and expect more civility and mature honest discussion than what the other networks can provide.
I’m about to turn off the TV.
FIRE CHRIS WALLACE.
His petty attacks on Speaker John Boehner today were way over the top and disgusting.

Shame on Chris Matthews. With the shape our country is in, who the heck cares if our Speaker cries…heck most Americans are crying over the shape our country is in. He KNOWS how bad it really is…so it shows he cares by getting emotional. Boehner is right…smoking is legal. Let him do it…so far we are still a free country. Why doesn’t Wallace ask Obama the same question!

Excellent point. Please consider sending that to the comments at Wallace Watch!
I knew the crying question was coming up. Oddly enough, a TV was on somewhere when BOR asked Wallace that question, even though I can’t stomach watching Ted Baxter.
Wallace is a lib at heart, but I think his eyes are slowly beginning to open. Same with Nina Eastman (courtesy of the SEIU protesting on her nextdoor neighbor’s lawn when that teenage boy was home alone).
I agree that Boehner did an excellent job using “The American people expect…” and “The American people voted in November for us to…” lines. That used to infuriate me when Pelosi said it ad nauseum, so it looks like the Repubs are learning something. And while Wallace kept hammering JB on admitting to cuts in Medicare/SS, he frustrated Wallace in return by repeating the identical answer every time.

bitterclinger commented:
I’ve seen Wallace hammer libs over and over with the same question, but not nearly to the extent that he did it to Boehner. I think that’s because libs don’t take that shiite and FOX knows the libs will just refuse to appear if it keeps up. Too bad Repubs don’t take the same attitude.
Boehner’s answer about smoking being legal is what Rush says all the time. Let’s see if he plays Boehner’s response tomorrow.

I really think that he has a problem and it is that he sees what is really going on behind the scenes. He gets to see how bad it rally is in Washinton and it saddens him. Emotionalism is that of the left. Logic is that of the Right. Being 3rd in line to the presidency, crying all the time is not very presidential for our country.

As we are now facing historical deficits and possibilities of turning our own nation over to dictatorships the incompetence of any serious media to ignore important news and debate inconsequential tabloid crap is treason against the american people. There shouldn’t be any resentment of Wallace or FOX on this. Boehner, as much as I disagree with him (and as much as I fell that FOX is a bias propaganda mouthpiece for the GOP), is a strong leader that happens to get all teary eyed often. It doesn’t diminish his leadership skills simply because he’s an emotional person. But it’s a news worthy issue that a lot of people are seeing and asking about. We’ve known for several days, as Boehner has, that Wallace was going to ask these questions, giving Boehner plenty of time to for a prepared rebuttal.
This wasn’t about Fox News or Wallace attacking a weakness of a GOP leader but rather giving said GOP leader free airtime to clarify that what many see as a weakness is really not a weakness at all.
Robert commented:
Perhaps some of that valuable air time could have been spent reviewing the current dimplomatic failure of the administration to deal with the ongoing protests in the Middle East, and the strategic implications for America, instead of engaging in personal gossip worthy of the National Enquirer.

I think they are mistaking “fair and balanced” to mean attacking repubs, no Fox News, I want both sides equally grilled, Wallace DOES NOT grill dems/liberals as much as repubs/conservatives. And I am a registered independent who is observing this.

Wallace seems to want to ask “gotcha” questions of Republicans while many, many times he gives Democrats a pass on what they have done. He also has a tendancy to let Democrats filibuster against Republicans on his show.
So what if Boehner cries. So what if he smokes. It is rumored that Obama burns two packs a day in a White House that is a “no smoking” zone. How do those questions advance solving problems we have (like a $1.4 trillion deficit)? Simple, Wallace was trying to personalize his interview but some things should just be left unsaid unless Wallace wants to work for the National Enquirer.

We hold accountants to higher legal and ethical standards when it comes to financial fraud, and we should equally hold journalists to a higher standard when it comes to sexism, racism, paternalism, and other disparaging centerings that exploit or diminish the other.

His smoking is his business, and I admit that I would love to see him tear up much less, if never… I want Boehner to be a badass. Some useful definitions:
If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one. If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s a foreign religion, of course!)
If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

Over-reaction by Hoft. It was in jest and kindness, especially kind & caring was how CW asked about smoking. Something like: “We like you. Why do you smoke?”
I interpret Boehner’s crying as his own gratitude and humility about his rise from poverty for which he worked hard. He cares about American kids in poverty. He cares about American kids having a future. He’s human. If your compassion for a little kid in need can’t make you cry, what does?
Reno_Dave commented:
Okay, so Boehner gets choked-up when he talks about certain subjects like his rise to Speaker from a kid sweeping-up in the family owned and operated bar. Big deal. I get choked up during certain scenes in movies, no matter how many times I’ve seen them. Show me a man who doesn’t get emotional at the end of “Old Yeller” and I’ll show you a man without a heart.
So why Obama mentioned Boehner’s history as he did during the SOTU, when he knew it would get an emotional response out of Boehner? Could it be because Boehner was sitting behind him, fully visible to the cameras, and any reaction would be seen by the 40+M watching the speech, and that the moment would be replayed over and over?

I believe the smoking question was out of line. Why? Because it’s so PC not to smoke and yet, as Boehner pointed out – it’s legal. No one would DARE to ask BHO such a question. And yes, it’s embarrassing to have that question asked in public. There’s a lot of private, yet legal, things we do that are not subject for public consumption.
Smoking and tearing up (or crying) does NOT effect how a leader does his/her job. Wanna next ask him about how often he has sex?

There are certain things, eg, kids who have it tough, that cause him great emotion and concern, thinking of his own childhood.
The one thing I really like about Boehner’s story is that he reminds liberal elites that minority children are NOT the only one’s who face challenges–economic, learning, familial, etc.. White children do too. And most programs, including college entrance programs, to help “disadvantaged” kids are not aimed at white children, especially in rural areas. White working class kids are being left behind. This is a story that needs to be told. Boehner’s story helps start that conversation. Not all whites are wealthy or advantaged.

Jeeze, Lighten up Mr. Hoft…..yellow journalism is not your forte.
Bob commented:
I wanted the Speaker to ask Chris about the difference between merit and nepotism and if Chris honestly thought he would have a job in broadcasting with an ugly puss like his, if not for the pull of his Commie 60 Minute father..
Boar Breath commented:
I used to think highly of Chris Wallace, but after that interview today I am beginning to think he isn’t what I thought he was. Here is the 3rd person in line for the US Presidency, here is the speaker of the House of Representatives that has just been taken over by Republicans and that is the best he can do for questions? The Arabic world is in flames, the country is in terrible economic shape and he wants to talk about crying or smoking? If I want to hear crap like that I will tune in MSNBC or CNN. The next time he has a liberal on I’ll bet he doesn’t grill them about their personal foibles!
DrJim77 commented:
Why does someone not ask Oblahblah about his smoking ?!? As to Bohner’s crying, IMHO it takes a stronger man to cry and show his emotions than not…

FOR g-ds SAKE, THE ENTIRE PLANET’S FALLING APART AND WHAT ARE WE DOING ….WE’RE IN A SNIT BECAUSE JOHN BOEHNER SMOKES. WHO GIVES A RIP? WHY AREN’T WE OBSESSED WITH THE ONE HANGIN OFF OBAMA’S LIP??

I wrote to complain and you should too at FNS@foxnews.com.
BS61 commented:
Boehner had more composure – whenever someone questions me about smoking I say FU and that I will never quit.

Nice Deb commented:
Come on, Jim, that wasn’t mean spirited at all. Wallace asked some questions that a lot of people have, in a good natured manner, and Boehner handled it with aplomb. No harm no foul. I mean – the guy does cry a lot. Are people not allowed to ask him about it?
Jaimo commented:
Did Christ Wallace ever ask Nancy Pelosi why she was such a *itch?
Adam commented:
Jim – Calm the heck down. This is a non-issue; both Chris and Boehner treated it as such.
trp commented:
It didn’t seem petty or disgusting to me. Wallace gave Boehner the chance to address these issues in a good-natured way. I actually thought it was handled well by both of them.
ogee commented:
Crying is natural and is done to relieve stress and grief. It’s human nature. Some people are too bottled up and out of touch t cry…ahem—> Obama can’t cry because he has no empathy.
ogee commented:
Oh, and Chris Wallace is a bona fide lefty. Ask a PUMA. it’s common knowledge even though he tries to hide it.
Dee commented:
I’ve never been a fan of Chris Wallace. Especially, compared to Tony Snow, he pales in comparison.
Diane Valencen commented:
I think now is the time for Rupert Murdoch to be thanked for pulling of the third most awesome confidence scheme in the last 50 years!
karinee commented:
Think Fox should boot old Chris Wallace. Who is interested that he wife cooks soup for him?
Geez the world is on fire, and old Chris talks about smoking, crying, and soup.
Bring back Brett, Hayes, and Charles for informative information.
Fuzzy commented:
I don’t get it. The country is going to hell in a handbasket and Wallace cares whether or not or why Speaker Boehner tears up? Or that he smokes? Really? These are the pressing issues of our time? *shakes head*
Jerry C commented:
How do you eat an elephant? One piece at a time.
Or in this case, how do you destroy the Speaker of the House? One question at a time.
Jim Hoft has it right. This was a calculated tactic meant to bring down Boehner. And the fact that NObama included him in his SOTU address while he was seated behind him, indicates a broader agenda. My brethren, read Ephesians 6:12. Maybe you’ll begin to see what we’re up against.
burt commented:
Send a letter (or emil) to Congressman Boehner and tell him your behind him. Fox NEWS hired this guy because of his father not because of his talent. He is one of the “elites”.
Lucy commented:
I feel Chris Wallace did an excellent job. Did not talk down to him at all. Asked honest questions. The fact Obama smokes doesn’t seem to get any attention in the media. Smoking is a drug, legal or not. Shows weakness. While in office all drug use should be stopped. Even alcohol. My opinion. I am a smoker (reformed) and know the strength it takes to quit. Obama needs to quit.
