Harry Reid doesn’t have the votes. Tonight the far left majority leader announced that democrats would pull their pork-laden $1.1 trillion omnibus bill.
The Corner reported:
Speaking now on the Senate floor, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) says he is “sorry and disappointed” to announce that he does not have the votes for the omnibus spending package. Instead, he will work with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) to draft a temporary continuing resolution to fund the government into early next year.
Reid says nine Republican senators approached him today to tell him that while they would like to see the bill passed, they could not vote for it. He did not reveal the names of the nine. A top Senate source tells National Review Online that “it looks like Harry Reid buckled under the threat of Republicans reading [the bill] aloud.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was those Republicans who buckled
under the threat of being exposed as porkers.
Nevertheless, hooray for today.
Like GLM says, on to the next one, and keep a sharp eye out.

I have to say that although I have never really been very involved in politics, other than casing my votes in every election, I’m finding it really exciting to see that our voices CAN make a difference. The internet has made this all possible. Our politicians may be crooked, but they enjoy their positions and they aren’t stupid enough to ignore the will of the masses to their own detriment. The blogosphere has made it possible for them to find out in days, if not minutes, exactly how people, VOTING people, feel about the issues we face. The days of doing what they please and hoping we forget about it by the next election are over.
Thank God Al Gore invented the internet! (just kidding!)

Yes, we must watch closely for a last minute end-run, but by all accounts, unless a bunch of REPUBLICANS cave for some reason, they simply aren’t going to have the votes to pass this monstrosity. If we make it through the day Friday without any shenanigans, I think we can put this one to bed. The rest of them … well that’s another story! Let’s keep their feet to the fire people! DREAM is the biggie, and I’d love to see the Tax bill go down in flames too. We can do much better than that piece of crap.

Democrats Pull ’Omnibus’ Budget Bill Amid Republican Opposition
[Reid also scheduled test votes for Dec. 18 on legislation to repeal the
“don’t ask, don’t tell” ban on gays serving openly in the military and on a
measure that would grant legal status to some younger illegal immigrants.
The House passed a “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal measure yesterday.
The immigration legislation, called the DREAM Act, would allow people who
came to the U.S. illegally before age 16 and remain for at least five years
to gain legal residency after going to college or serving in the military. The
House passed it Dec. 9.]

Arch commented:
It’s the process the democrats willfully disregarded that everyone needs to understand. Minor rant to follow.
In February 2010, Obama should have submitted his FY2011 budget requests to Congress. In April 2010, The House and Senate committees with department and agency oversight should have marked up those requests and begun resolving differences in authorized spending in joint committee, issuing the Concurrent Budget Resolution as a model for the appropriations process. This resolution should have been submitted to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees by 10 June. HAC and SAC each should have marked up the requests, met in joint committee to resolve differences and reported out to their respective chambers Appropriations Bills for approval. Again, changes made and approved would become Joint FY2011 Appropriations Bills. Each bill should be on the President’s desk for signature by 30 September 2010. None of that happened.
Why? What would the 112th Congress have looked like if Pelosi and Reid were photographed smiling behind Obama as he signed $1.1 billion spending before November 2nd 2010?
In six weeks, the FY2012 budget request should be submitted to the most powerful man in America – Representative Paul Ryan.

no, just pointing out there are ither things on the table so to speak..
btw, as noted in the title, the link does include the following:
[The Senate’s top Democrat said he won’t try to pass a $1.2 trillion
“omnibus” spending bill for the government loaded with thousands of
lawmakers’ pet projects because Republicans withdrew their support
for the measure.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said tonight
lawmakers will instead approve a stopgap funding measure of an as
yet undetermined length. A so-called continuing resolution currently
funding the government expires Dec. 18.
The omnibus measure, which was 1,924 pages long, was introduced earlier
this week and would set funding levels for government programs through
Sept. 30, 2011, the end of the fiscal year.]

you can take that to the bank..
The spending barons saw their power ebb in the
wake of midterm elections that delivered major
gains for Republicans — with considerable help
from anti-spending tea party activists.
unfortunately, imho, you (generalization) can also take the fact that the
established anti-TPM Republicans truly learned nothing, except how to do
a better job of hiding their “you can fool some of the people some of the

House passes tax cut package; 277-148
[Acting with uncommon speed, Congress sent President Barack Obama sweeping, bipartisan legislation late Thursday night to avoid a Jan. 1 spike in income taxes for millions and renew jobless benefits for victims of the worst recession in 80 years.
The measure also will cut Social Security taxes for nearly every wage-earner and pump billions of dollars into the still-sluggish economy.
The 277-148 vote came the day after the Senate cleared the bill, 81-19.
The legislation was the result of a reach across party lines between Obama and top Republicans in Congress — stubborn adversaries during two years of political combat that ended when the GOP emerged the undisputed winner in midterm elections on Nov. 2.
Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Fla., called it "a bipartisan
moment of clarity" as the House moved toward a vote.
After forcing a delay in the House early in the day, Democratic critics settled for a separate vote in their bid to toughen an estate tax provision they attacked as a giveaway to the very rich. They were defeated, 233-194, with one vote of "present."
"The president will be able to sign it as soon as he likes," said Rep. Rob Andrews of New Jersey as the events unfolded in the final days of a tumultuous two-year Congress.
In a statement released shortly after the vote, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said the bill was "good for growth, good for jobs, good for working and middle-class families, and good for businesses looking to invest and expand their work force."]

okay, that was a fun excerpt, here’s a more serious one:
[A surprise move in the Senate: That trillion-dollar spending bill with over 6,000 pork barrel earmarks (see below) was dropped by Democrats last night, probably after SC Sen JimDeMint made good on his threat to read the entire bill, which was so thick it took two days to print and would've taken at least 50 hours to read by congressional pages working non-stop in shifts.
They didn't get too far.
Replacing the 19-hundred page bill was a stripped-down
single page temporary funding bill with no earmarks.
There's also more to it than money. Democrats wanted to get to two high
priorities on their legislative agenda: The DREAM Act and a repeal of "Don't
ask, don't tell." (See below)
This was a significant win for Republicans --particularly Tea Party
Republicans-- who have made the elimination of pork-barrel spending
a priority.]
