Republicans Collapse on START Treaty …Update: Motion to Advance Treaty Passes 67-28

FLASHBACK: Obama promised to neuter America during the 2008 election.
Today his wish came true.
Republicans Isakson, Corker, Bennet, Brown and Lamar Alexander will support the nuclear treaty with Russia. Democrats needed 67 votes for ratification.
It looks like they have them.

Republican opposition to New START is collapsing. One Senate source just told me the vote for ratification could go as high as 75. Another said, “I don’t know if it will get that high, but it’s starting to tick up there.” As the sense builds that ratification is inevitable, Republicans are lining up to get on the “right side.” Lamar Alexander’s support, noted below, is a crucial sign of which way the wind is blowing, although he’ll probably be the only member of the Republican leadership to vote for it. At least Jon Kyl was able to get more money for modernization and that letter from President Obama making assurances on missile defense. Otherwise, this is a dismaying rout.
UPDATE: The motion to advance the treaty was passed in the lame duck session 67-28.

The Senate on Tuesday voted to limit debate on ratification of a major arms control accord with Russia, setting the stage for a final vote on the so-called START treaty.
The Senate voted 67-28 to advance the legislation, easily exceeding the 60 votes required.
The Senate is expected to ratify the treaty some time on Wednesday in what would be the latest in a string of legislative victories for President Obama after his party was soundly beaten in the midterm elections last month.
Earlier, Republicans senators expressed outrage as Obama secured enough votes for ratification.
At least 10 Republicans publicly announced their support for the accord, including Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, putting it on a virtual glidepath to ratification by Wednesday night.

The New START Treaty negotiated by Team Obama with the Russians is a bad deal, one that would essentially kill our right to modernize our nuclear arsenal or to build a comprehensive missile defense system. Much more debate is needed — along with amendments that would make the U.S. safer from nuclear strikes by rogue nations.
START will gut the U.S. military by reducing the arsenal of nuclear weapons and delivery systems to insufficient levels because that is exactly its point. The Russians have demanded that the American arsenal be reduced to the size of the Russian arsenal projected for the 2010s. It is well known that Russia has fewer delivery systems subject to START provisions than the U.S. The treaty is clearly designed to bring the U.S. strategic arsenal down to the sorry state of the Russians’. And Russia cannot afford to maintain its arsenal at its present size, let alone greatly increase it, as Putin has threatened to do.
Within just a few years the number of Russian launchers will shrink substantially just due to age, attrition and deterioration. The New START is not needed. All it will do is lessen our capabilities while appeasing the Russians. That is dangerous!
The verification procedures are unreliable. The Russians already have violated both SALT treaties and START 1. You’d have to be out of your mind to think that they would not do so with the New START. A weakened America due to the New START will only encourage N. Korea, China, Pakistan and Iran to ramp up their nuclear capabilities.
It’s completely laughable to take the Russians threat of triggering a new arms race if we don’t sign START. The Russians don’t have the economic means to carry it out. But, the threat does show how favorable the treaty is to Russia and exposes what an unreliable and disingenuous partner they would be.
Reagan would have never signed away national missile defense in a world full of present and future threats from multiple nuclear powers on the basis of a deal with just one of them.
Former Attorney General Edwin Meese has stated “Reagan was adamant that no arms-control agreement be allowed to encumber the pursuit of advanced ballistic missile defense technology.”
President Reagan would have said a strong “Nyet!” to the new START.
Furthermore, the Senate needs to review the full pre- and post-treaty negotiating record to see how much say Moscow will have in American deployment of missile defense. Why is Team Obama withholding this material? Is there something to hide? Moreover, what’s the rush here to cram this through during the lame duck session with such little scrutiny? Is there something to hide?

I fully agree with most of the comments here. My biggest question is how the heck did this happen? We need to really change our tactics as Conservatives because this is totally unacceptable. First, I sent an email to the RNC telling them I would NEVER pledge my allegiance to the Republican Party EVER AGAIN.

Part of the problem with the START treaty is an utter lack of understanding of Russia by almost the entire American political spectrum. Russia, whether tsarist, communist or secular dictatorship, has never been interested in world peace. Russia is interested in Russian interests, an attitude from which we in America could learn, if we were educable. Yet, the “debate” over START is a throwback to Cold War positions, the left eager to please the bear and the right fearful of Communist expansion. Russia’s neighbors (except Alaska and Canada) have good reason to fear it. But, in America, all that we have militarily to fear about Russia is that one or more rogues could take over its nuclear arsenal. The START treaty certainly cannot stop that. It would have been smart for us to have bought all that weaponry from Russia when we had money and they needed it.

The GOP must die off to make room for a party of real conservatives. Until some of our supposed “real” conservatives start calling out the traitors in their party I doubt any of them is worth a damn either. That includes Pence and DeMint. If the GOP leaders aren’t spitting mad at you then you’re not a real conservative.

I think it’s time the Tea Party start calling themselves THE CONSERVATIVES. Talk fiscal conservatism non-stop; aggressively appeal to all Republican, Democrat, Libertarian and Independent conservatives to join together to save the country. Be for spending rollbacks, entitlement cuts, elimination of federal agencies, and budget reductions of all kinds. No more Tea talk, it’s time for the hard liquor. Let the candidates who can figure out how to guide this movement come to the fore.
We can’t leave this to our politicians. The people are going to have to take charge, instead of watching our future slip through so many underqualified, disloyal fingers.
