Barack Obama must be looking ahead to 2012.
The Obama family went to church today, a “rare occurence” according to the media.
But, when Obama does go to church, he likes a lively sermon.
The AP reported:
President Barack Obama and his family took a break from their Hawaiian vacation to attend Sunday church services, a rare occurrence for a president who prefers to worship in private.
The first family arrived at a chapel at Marine Corps Base Hawaii mid-morning for a multi-denominational service. The Obamas were greeted by clapping parishioners and a band playing “Joy to the World” as they were led to their seats in the front row…
Obama was the first worshipper to take communion, dipping the wafer in wine before placing it in his mouth.
One in five Americans believe Obama is Muslim. So does the Saudi media.

KR…..Our church just recently did communion this way by dipping bread into wine. There is a good chance that Jesus might have done it this way with his disciples.

Trying to present himself as a priest, perhaps? I’ve never heard of a denomination that serves communion this way other than priests of the Catholic church.

We started dipping our bread at our Methodist Church about two years ago. I’m not crazy about it. Our preacher that instituted the practice is a HUGE Obama supporter, over the top liberal. My husband’s family has been with church for decades, so I tell myself that I can outlast this particular preacher.
Todd commented:
KR…So true, God knows your heart. I was always taught there were two prerequisites in which you needed to fulfill at least one before you could partake of communion. The first if you were not saved you could still partake if you were willing to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. The second prerequisite was assuming that you were saved, if you had any sins not forgiven asked God first to forgive them right before you took of the bread and wine. If you were an unbeliever and still partook of the communion you risk a judgment from God (1 Corinthians 11:27-32). I am not a religious scholar I just know that is how I have been taught within the church. So with that said if Obama partook without doing either one then then he is a LIAR. But then again did not Judas partake of communion right before he betrayed Christ. No I am not Catholic.

You’re 100% right. This is crap.
“Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,”Take it, this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it.”
- Mark 14:22-23.
MAtthew 26:27: “Then he took the cup , gave thanks and offered it to them saying, “Drink from it, all of you.”
We’ve only had bazillions of subsequent references in the past two thousand years to “Drink from this cup” in prayers, music, literature, plays and films.
What so-called pastor is promoting this heresy?
Of course, it could be the fiction of ignorant AP reporters who are making all this up anyway and don’t know that’s NOT what’s done. Remember, we all had to wade through the “snub-nosed Glock” nonsense last week.

AcadieAnne commented:
Dipping the bread in the wine (or grape juice) is a form of communion known as intinction. I have seen it in United Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, and independent churches. I’ve run into it in everything from small summer Bible camps to 6,000+ member mega-churches. Honestly, the way communion is performed is not as import to me nearly as much as state of the recipient’s heart. As was stated above, this is not a sacrament to be taken lightly.
I also wonder if the act of communion could have been performed for show. I believe the traditional Protestant times to take communion are the first Sunday of the month and high Holy Days (Christmas, Easter, etc). Dec. 26 does not fit this criteria.
CV1 commented:
Obama’s religious beliefs should be between him and God. No one really knows what Obama believes. So he goes to Church on a Sunday. He’s kinda damned if he does or damned if he doesn’t. when all is said and done, it’s his eternal future. But we have more pressing matters that involve all of us right now!
I don’t need assumed religious comments to severly dislike this guy. His lying, liberal ways offer plenty of reasons to be against him.

True, but he created this dilemma for himself. Everything Obama does seems to be motivated by politics. Early in the 2008 campaign BO tried to put on the religious/Christian act. I noticed him doing this and it fell flat, so he put that act aside for awhile.
Now that 2012 is rolling around he may be reviving it along with whatever may work, like brushing up on Reagan’s life and quotes.
Expect more photo ops, unofficial campaigning, lofty sounding BS, or folksy sounding BS,…
whatever they think will work.

……….
Frequency of communion depends on the individual church. Some have it every Sunday. Some once a motnh, some once a quarter. One woman asked once about why the Presbyterian church had it only once a quarter. Apparently the roots of that go back to nothing more than the Scottish churches were too poor to buy wine for even monthly communion, so it was quarterly.
So, that in itself isn’t anything significant. If they knew the POTUS was coming (probably) they may have been motivated to provide communion if it wasn’t scheduled. Maybe they always have communion anyway. Sigh. Who knows? The media just gives us puff pieces. Well … God knows. The media just shoved this in everyone’s faces to promote Obama over all else. They don’t seem to know how to play it – they want everyone to know that Obama went to church, but then they hustle to add, “a rare occasion” maybe in case the athiests get pissed.
You mentioned ‘intiction’ as the name for dipping the wafer, new one for me, but interesting to learn. We’ve found many Protestant mainstream churches use bread, but a number of other churches explain that it was Passover so the original bread Jesus used that night was the unleavened bread, so they use only Matzoh crackers for communion, but have never seen dipping before. The idea of it is grating, even if fundamentally what you say is correct, it’s the spiritual condition that’s the most important factor in all this.

I’ll say this, KR: If they make a big deal just because he went to Church on Sunday, then he must not go to Church very often. I also believe nothing this man says and everything he does. Going to Church seems on the surface to be a good thing. RARELY, going to Church trumps the “short term” good thing and exposes a weak person.
As for what he believes, he has a right to keep that personal, but his actions reveal much!
