It looks like Harry Reid and the democrats have the votes they need for the START Treaty with Russia. At least they are getting close. Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) appears to be the latest Republican to fold on the deal.
The Corner reported:

On Sunday night, after a weekend of wrangling, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) filed for cloture on the New START treaty, setting up a crucial Tuesday vote on whether to end debate. A final vote could come on Thursday. As Josh Rogin observes, keep an eye on Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) as the clock ticks:

A lot could change between now and then. Senate aides said that Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) was working with Democrats behind the scenes on a time agreement for the debate. As of Sunday evening, no time agreement had been struck.

The fact that it’s now Corker doing the negotiating is significant. Until recently, Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ) had been the center of attention. But after nine GOP senators voted to move to debate New START last week over the objections of Kyl, the administration wrote off Kyl’s vote and decided to push forward with the Republicans that were willing to go along.

Jennifer Rubin says its not clear if democrats have the needed votes adding that the administration is far too willing to accommodate the Russians and far too hesitant to defend American interests.

  1. I just HAVE to ask myself, why are they so obsessed with getting THIS done now? I smell a rat …

  2. What is the saying?…folding like a cheap cardtable

  3. Now we’re finding out who the progressive republicans are. 2012 we will remember and make sure you don’t make it past the primaries. This is how we do it. powder is dry.

  4. I really hate these people.

  5. The rat is we would have to get Russia’s approval on any new homeland defense systems BEFORE we could proceed with building them. It’s a statement in the preamble of the agreement. Bambi told the senate he would “write them a letter” assuring them this ain’t so. This is NOT a good deal for America. If anyone from TN is reading this site, PLEASE cal Corker and tell him to back off.

  6. Fair warning Corker, if you do this you are done!

  8. We just elected a new congress. Why does the the administration and the Lame Duck congress think it is so important to pass important legislation now? It is because they know these are against the will of the majority of Americans and the newly elected people will be more responsive to them. If we have to ask Russia,s permission to do anything pertaining to our defense then this is a traitorous bill being pushed by traitors. I don’t know what else to call them.

  10. I will say it again…there is a reason fired employees are escorted to the door while being watched as they gather their personal items. You dont want them trashing computers. sabotaging software or whatever. You dont want them stewing till the end of the week and bringa gun in to get even with ones who fired them.

If this is the case I hope the GOP passs some legislation t5hat forbids future congresses from doing any major legislation during the lame dick session. and I hope they do it right after passing legislation eliminating all cazars. NEA, PBS , NPR Funding and as many other liberal institutions as possible. and eliminating about 1 million govt jobs that either are not needed or would be done better by the private sector.

somone posted my unfinished post for me.. :D

GP is loaded with “gliches” today, glad i’ll be out for most of it..

    at any rate..

i believe Corker went to the Senate in 2006, but that’s no excuse, ergo,
things would probably be different had all the RINO’s been ejected before
then (iow: they wouldn’t be so influential now)..

    heh, they’re steamrolling along..

shovel ready jobs evidently means shoving legislation down our throats..

they had better reverse course in 11, or they may not last until 12.. gah!!

  12. The very fact that the Obama politburo is trying to shove this treaty through a lame duck session tells me there is probably something very wrong with it. Every Republican senator who caves on this should get a primary challenge, and I will contribute to his challenger even if he is Donald Duck. I think I am not alone in having had my fill of the spineless Republican Old Guard. They are guarding nothing but their own behinds and will not act responsibly for the country until their own behinds are put at risk.

We can make sure this happens by pushing for it. That’s the only way it will come about.

  14. Anyone who can, e-mail Corker and let him know we don’t want this. The rest of us should call or e-mail our respective senators. Push!

  16. CALL YOUR SENATORS! Demand a NO vote on START. Stop START!!!

The New START Treaty negotiated by Team Obama with the Russians is a bad deal, one that would essentially kill our right to modernize our nuclear arsenal or to build a comprehensive missile defense system. Much more debate is needed — along with amendments that would make the U.S. safer from nuclear strikes by rogue nations.

START will gut the U.S. military by reducing the arsenal of nuclear weapons and delivery systems to insufficient levels because that is exactly its point. The Russians have demanded that the American arsenal be reduced to the size of the Russian arsenal projected for the 2010s. It is well known that Russia has fewer delivery systems subject to START provisions than the U.S. The treaty is clearly designed to bring the U.S. strategic arsenal down to the sorry state of the Russians’. And Russia cannot afford to maintain its arsenal at its present size, let alone greatly increase it, as Putin has threatened to do.

Within just a few years the number of Russian launchers will shrink substantially just due to age, attrition and deterioration. The New START is not needed. All it will do is lessen our capabilities while appeasing the Russians. That is dangerous!

The verification procedures are unreliable. The Russians already have violated both SALT treaties and START I. You’d have to be out of your mind to think that they would not do so with the New START. A weakened America due to the New START will only encourage N. Korea, China, Pakistan and Iran to ramp up their nuclear capabilities.

It’s completely laughable to take the Russians threat of triggering a new arms race if we don’t sign START. The Russians don’t have the economic means to carry it out. But, the threat does show how favorable the treaty is to Russia and exposes what an unreliable and disingenuous partner they would be.

Reagan would have never signed away national missile defense in a world full of present and future threats from multiple nuclear powers on the basis of a deal with just one of them.

Former Attorney General Edwin Meese has stated “Reagan was adamant that no arms-control agreement be allowed to encumber the pursuit of advanced ballistic missile defense technology.”

President Reagan would have said a strong “Nyet!” to the new START.

Furthermore, the Senate needs to review the full pre- and post-treaty negotiating record to see how much say Moscow will have in American deployment of missile defense. Why is Team Obama withholding this material? Is there something to hide? Moreover, what’s the rush here to cram this through during the lame duck session with such little scrutiny? Is there something to hide?

  17. The democrats of the 111th congress, along with HRH Obama, have proved that they are careless, utterly and hopelessly careless, in the wording of legislation that they have passed (Obamacare, Stimulus, Finance Reform, Cash for Clunkers, etc.) and also in the legislation that has not passed (Stimulus II, Dream Act, Cap and Trade, etc.). Why in God’s name would any republican senator trust them with wording to a NUCLEAR ARMS TREATY WITH THE SOVIETS when the stakes could well be our very survival.

Any republican senator that votes for this should not only be primaried, but should be tarred and feathered and run out of Washington on a rail.

  18. I just checked my link and it said it did not exist!!!! ????? Yes it does!

  19. This 111th congress and administration are careless? Hardly. They know exactly what they are doing.
Name me one thing they have done in the last two years that has actually benefitted this country rather than weakened it or damaged it. Obama is nothing if not consistent. Our Manchurian Candidate is out to destroy this nation, and I am sure none of us will like what he intends to replace it with.

  20. From WE, the latest info I can find –

President Barack Obama lobbied senators by phone Monday to back an arms treaty with Russia that he’s called a national security imperative, as a top Senate Democrat conceded “house by house combat” would be needed to win enough GOP votes to prevail.

The president is continuing to call senators as he presses for passage of the New START treaty before Congress adjourns,

Democrats have now picked up the support of GOP Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi,

Democrats expect to get 57 votes from their caucus, with Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., absent due to cancer surgery on Monday. Four Republican senators — Richard Lugar of Indiana, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine and George Voinovich of Ohio — have said they back the treaty

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Obama’s presidential rival in 2008, said he was still undecided

  29. Chippy you are correct…they are very close to 67.

While the senate continues to debate the new START treaty, Russia sent out a clear message: if the treaty is altered at all, Russia will not accept it. From the New York Times:
