Reuters reported:

Contentious Internet traffic rules facing a vote next week are likely to be adopted without radically veering from a proposal unveiled earlier in the month, telecommunications policy analysts said on Wednesday.

The Federal Communications Commission will vote on Dec. 21 on whether to adopt regulations that ban the blocking of lawful traffic but allow Internet service providers to ration Web traffic on their networks.

The proposal laid out two weeks ago by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski was met with concern from the other members of the FCC, putting in question the likelihood of winning over a majority of the five-member FCC.

The two Republican commissioners have objected to FCC action on Internet rules, saying the Internet is best able to thrive in the absence of regulation. And Genachowski’s two fellow Democrats on the panel could withhold support from any measure they view as too weak.

But analysts said commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Michael Copps, the Democrats on the panel, are more likely to consider it in the majority’s interest to move ahead with so-called net neutrality rules.

    Amen to that. Power to legislate, or power to rule, needs to be revoked from the departments, commissions, administrations and such, that never should have been granted that kind of power to start with. I’m talking about the FCC, of course, and the EPA, for another. There are many more, but those two happen to be on my mind at the moment.

    One more thing that needs to be done is the total dismantling and dissolving of some federal depts, the Dept of Education, in particular. Leave education to the states and if it turns out that some states educate their kids better than others, well, then, move that state if that’s important to you or get involved in the education system in your state and kick their butts into doing it better. Just keep education local so that kids can start being taught what’s useful and what’s true instead of the pro-socialist brainwashing that’s being passed off as an education nowadays.

  23. ISPs can already ration the traffic on their networks. That is always applied on contracts that have no flat-rate. Around here that’s usually done with mobile internet, where you have a certain amount of data per month allocated for you, if you go above it, they throttle your speed. That is pretty normal. And I love my flat-rate.

    I’m sure US ISPs have similar things, depending on the contract. So that whole thing is BS.

    The internet should be free ground.

    You know what this reminds me of?

    Back in the Old West, there was this thing called free grazing. Then people started to set up fences, etc. Approved by the government. That allowed cattle barons to become more powerful and, of course, I’m pretty sure that the politicians pushing for it didn’t walk away with empty hands either.

    The resistance that may be brought up with such moves will be more than the FCC can handle. You don’t want to piss off the smart guys on the web. Oh no you don’t. They can take down the FCC’s systems. I’m not kidding. I’m not talking about crap like in movies like “Hackers”, forget that. But there is an ongoing war out there on a scale Dems or the FCC can’t even remotely imagine. The FCC should be careful. The moment the “other folks” have set their sights on them, they’re screwed, because I seriously doubt that the FCC’s security can match with anything a private company has (remember, FCC, that’s government issue.)

    I worked in IT for a long time and we had to fight constant battles with these “other folks”.

  28. The FCC group has defined the main difference between a democracy and a republic. In a democracy the majority rules; in a republic the minority is protected. This is why many of our founding fathers considered a democracy the most evil form of government.
