DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano launches- “If you see something – Say something” campaign.

BIG SIS INVADES WAL-MART: ‘IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING’
WASHINGTON — Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced the expansion of the Department’s national “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign to hundreds of Walmart stores across the country—launching a new partnership between DHS and Walmart to help the American public play an active role in ensuring the safety and security of our nation.
“Homeland security starts with hometown security, and each of us plays a critical role in keeping our country and communities safe,” said Secretary Napolitano. “I applaud Walmart for joining the ‘If You See Something, Say Something’ campaign. This partnership will help millions of shoppers across the nation identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to law enforcement authorities.”
The “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign—originally implemented by New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and funded, in part, by $13 million from DHS’ Transit Security Grant Program—is a simple and effective program to engage the public and key frontline employees to identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to the proper transportation and law enforcement authorities.
More than 230 Walmart stores nationwide launched the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign today, with a total of 588 Walmart stores in 27 states joining in the coming weeks. A short video message, available here, will play at select checkout locations to remind shoppers to contact local law enforcement to report suspicious activity.

Taking a step back though, I’m not sure how to react to this. Yes, I do think we want everyone to be more aware. It’s how the police get most of their leads on everyday crimes. But as someone said before, isn’t this how the Nazi government started to crack down on citizens who weren’t following the Nazi line? As mush as I agree with the basic concept of being a good citizen I’m more afraid of what information might be gleaned from these reports and how this information might be used. There are lots of people out there who are looking for praise from someone and will use this (and will be used by this) to do the wrong and not the right thing. Is this the beginning of what Barry said would be a civilian force as well funded and as strong as the military?

You did say, “Napolitano is Big Sis, perhaps not in this case.” Why not in this case? Because she is only protecting Americans from terrorism by extending the same PR campaign that President Bush’s Anti-Terror Administration started. She is, in fact, telling people to WATCH OUT for terrorism. So, how is watching out for terrorism going to hurt us? That is the question I proposed, because I was referring to what is happen in this post that Gateway disagrees with.

John Stanford, if Napolitano was interested in protecting Americans, she’d close the Mexican border and institute Israeli style security and profiling, abolishing the TSA. All this Kabuki theater of groping airline passengers, checking out bus stations, and Big-Sistah-is-watching-YOU at Wal-Mart won’t stop any terrorists, and will, in fact, help them, by spreading our resources, and security too thinly. (“I dunno, I think that Salvation Army lady out there might be a Martian! Yes sir, gonna report her to Homeland Security! And that guy by the apple stand over there looks mighty suspicous too. . .!” What sort of terrorist activities could be going on at Wal-Mart anyway, that people are supposed to watch out for?)
It’s all about intimidating ordinary Americans, and forcing them to knuckle under to big government. And you’re in favor of it because it’s being done under a president with a “D” instead of an “R” after his name.
Rhinestone Suderman commented:
“Uh-oh, there’s a guy in the toy section, looking at the Barbie dolls kinda weird!” I mean, WTF? If they have reason to fear an attack at a Wal-Mart, shouldn’t they be going after the attempted perpetrators, instead of just setting up video cameras, and signs at the check out counters? “Got a red alert here, there’s a kid crying in Aisle 12 cuz he dropped his ice cream cone!”
And there’ll be whistleblower protection, yah, right. . . accuse a Moslem of anything suspicious, and CAIR will be on you like a ton of bricks! Remember the flying imam case? They wanted to sue all the passengers on that plane! “If you see something, say something!” Uh-huh.

How is this any different from what’s in Europe or “loose lips sink ships”?
______________
Let’s start with Loose Lips Sink Ships. This was a WWII public service message encouraging people on the home front not to talk about any of the things military that they came across in their daily lives – their son just shipped out, they saw a aircraft carrier pull into port and so on and on.
Now, if you cannot immediately see the very real difference between the government telling everyone to keep the lips zipped in wartime and the government intruding into a private business transaction between Walmart and the customer encouraging citizens to rat out anything “unusual” then you have a real problem with logic & patterning.
Rhinestone Suderman commented:
Because we just know that Wal-Mart is just packed full of state secrets, and is full sooooper seeeekrit information, that would be a disaster if anyone leaked it!
Seriously, just what is it about Walmart, of all places, that demands this extra security, and scrutiny?
And what “unusual” things are we supposed to rat out? That’s dangerously vague! The crazy guy, talking to himself in the bakery section? The weird looking woman in the sunglasses, and tight leopard skin pants fingering the electric fans? The Punker in Aisle 7, with a purple mohawk? What exactly are we supposed to be looking for—in Walmart, of all places? Maybe Big Sis could have clued us in a bit better about this? I see strange things every time I go to a big store, especially at this time of year! Should I report the woman with the ring in her nose, and the weird little yapping mini-dog she’s hauling around in her purse? The guys dressed up as Princess Jasmine? That’s pretty “unusual”, isn’t it?
(We know it’s not Islamic terrorists we’re supposed to be watching for, because A. We know Big Sis kinda likes them, judging by the linkes above, and. . . B. Even if someone did spot an Islamic terrorist act at Walmart, CAIR would immediately sue them, and accuse them of Islamophobia—and Homeland Security would roll over, dump them and leave them at CAIR’s mercy.)
(Anway, doesn’t Walmart, like all big stores, have its own security?)

What’s in Europe?
In Europe criminals are treated better than their victims. There are no such campaigns. In fact the media, with the help of politicians, are hiding facts from the people when it comes to crimes. There are only campaigns when, let’s say, a German stabs a mohammedan woman (like it happened some time ago in Dresden), but when immigrant “youths” beat an old man almost to death in a subway station in Munich, then there’s NOTHING.
