San Fran Officials Ban Happy Meals With Veto Proof Majority Vote

San Francisco officials voted to ban Happy Meals this week.

Snitch editor Joe Eskenazi has the word on today’s vote by the Board of Supervisors to end toy giveaways for fast-food meals that fail to rate as nutritious. Eskenazi:
The SFWeekly reported:

The supes today passed an ordinance that will require meals to meet nutritional guidelines if restaurants wish to include a toy with the food purchase. More importantly, the supes passed the so-called “Happy Meal Ban” by an 8-3 vote ― meaning it can survive a promised veto from Mayor Gavin Newsom. That’s right: San Francisco done banned the Happy Meal. Robble robble.

Sponsored by Supervisor Eric Mar, the ban turned on the support of Bevan Dufty ― a bit of a head scratcher, Eskenazi says, for a mayoral candidate positioning himself as a pro-business moderate. Only thing to do now: Head to the McDonald’s at Third and Townsend in SOMA and hoard all the Penguins of Madagascar and Strawberry Shortcake Happy Meal toys they’ll sell you. Might prove eBay gold some day for your kids: Your svelte, un-diabetic kids.
