How in the world did this get by the producers?
“60 Minutes” tonight told the story of the real US unemployment situation a week before the midterm elections(?)
Did they forget who’s president? This is weird.
“Never have we had a recession this deep with a recovery this flat.”
Even after an extension of unemployment benefits to 99 weeks, many of those about to go off the program are in a quandary. Scott Pelley talked to some of them in California’s Silicon Valley. 20% of those unemployed today have college degrees. In California the actual unemployment rate is 22%. 4.5 million Americans have taken withdrawals from their 401K accounts.

I’ve lived through several depressions during my lifetime, including the devastating depression of the 70′s that saw virtually all of the manufacturing in New England close doors and move south. I’ve been saying for quite some time now that the only reason we are not seeing the endless lines at the unemployment office that stretch clear around a city block or more is because now those on unemployment do most of their reporting over the phone or online. If we could SEE this depression like you could the one in the 70′s there would be panic.
I’m surprised at the 99 weeks unemployment though. Whatever happened to the 26 weeks, plus 26 weeks extended benefits in tough time? TWO FULL YEARS of unemployment?

This is a story the LSM cannot ignore or bury of pretend it doesn’t exist. Even they have to have some credibility.
We are in Houston, TX and it’s not good here. Better than the national average, maybe, but not good at all. I am in the AEC market (architectural, engineering, construction) and it sad how many of the firms I call on are just barely surviving, just getting by on what little existing work they have. More than a few have gone out of business.
Worse, there is no sign or feeling or expectation of a turn around. We have years of inventory, empty building and homes, to work through and it is only getting worse as the foreclosure rate continues to go up.
Anecdotal, yes, but I bet it one that now pervades the country.

They purchase less TV advertising, and what they purchase is cheaper because the TV networks claim fewer and fewer viewers, thus aren’t able to maintain prior advertising rates. The networks like CBS start to panic, and attempt to alter the downward spiral…

We must stop the H-1B and L1 visa programs while the US is in a recession and our citizens and legal permanent residents are seeking work.
We must stop the export and outsourcing of jobs by our state and federal governmental agencies. No foreign national should be hired on any government contract when there are US citizens willing and able to do those jobs. We must institute tariffs on the importation of intellectual property and service work.

Oh that is just the barest tip of the ice berg you know. TheWon rented the entire 5-star hotel kitchens, facilities and all, plus half of another hotel plus a conference center. The US Navy will be standing off the coast of Mumbai. The trip is requiring AF1 plus two other planes, plus transport planes and fighter jets. Forty five vehicle (he took his own helicopter when he went to London). All the food & beverage they will consume plus a fleet of chefs. Huge numbers of secret service – took 200 to London. I’ve never heard of a potentate that travels in this kind of style.

my chronology in the last 5 years:
arrived in the states went out searching for job, got back breaking job making 9 bucks an hour.
worked it for 1 month while looking for better wage,
took new back braking job making 13 dollars an hour.
worked so hard my hands still havent recovered 6 years later.
worked that job for 4 months while still looking for a better job,
found one “better fit” and making 16.50 per hour. worked that for 1 year
allways looking for better, found it in another state, moved, worked that and learned more about my trade for 2 years
then started my own company.
many of those people have “over educated” themselves and are now no better than an uneducated welfare queen who thinks they are owed something for nothing.
