Great idea…. This year Democrats sent out “The most anti-Catholic political ad you’ll ever see” one week before the election.

The state central committee of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party is distributing an ad described by a National Catholic Register blogger as “the most anti-Catholic political ad you’ll ever see.” In the ad, a man dressed as a priest wears a campaign button that says “ignore the poor.”

Stay classy, democrats.

For the record… The Catholic Charities network is the nation’s fourth largest non-profit, according to The NonProfit Times. The combined revenue of the Catholic Charities network from all sources, public and private, was $2.69 billion in 2000. Nearly 90 percent of these funds were spent on programs and services, making the Catholic Charities network one of the country’s most efficient charities. Today, the Catholic Charities network — more than 1,600 local agencies and institutions nationwide — provide help, sometimes with government funding, and create hope for 6,597,998 in 2003, regardless of religious, social, or economic backgrounds thanks to the dedication of more than 51,000 staff and 175,000 volunteers.

  1. I do not agree with the Catholic Church on many doctrinal matters, but I have to tell you, throughout history none of man’s institutions can come close to the Church’s record of caring for the poor.

Is it a perfect record? No. But whether you are talking about the Catholic nuns who came to the New World to teach children, the modern Catholic Charities who cares for so many of our poor and destitute today, Mother Theresa – who gave every minute of her life in care for the poor of India – the list is nearly endless of those who in the name of the Catholic Church have gone round the world doing good for the poor.

More, it is a record that no other religion on earth can match.

This ad – and the dems that wrote it – are despicable!

  2. And yet most Roman Catholics still vote Democrat… can someone please explain this to me?

  3. If they really want to make a splash they should take out a similar ad against Islam.

  4. I am Catholic and will NEVER figure out why any Catholic votes Democrat except for pure stupidity.
    That includes my family members.

  5. Now it’s personal. And I’m a RELAPSED Catholic!

  6. This is disgusting but very typical of the DFL. They like to bully people, religions and corporations to their side.

  7. There was a time when most Southern Protestants voted for Democrats without asking why. Might it be that after the Obammunist “experiment” many Catholics will wake up and see that their necks are on the cultural chopping block and wake up?!

  8. I am no fan of the Catholic church but I fully agree with Granny. No one organization has done more for the poor than the Catholic church. This is a sick and dispicable ad. As far as Catholic’s voting democrap I also question this. Just as Jew’s who continue to support a party that has turned its back on Isreal.

  9. How many of those Commie red butted babies were born and slapped in Catholic hospitals?

Catholic and other religious entities created and founded hospitals all across the country. Some being the only source of health care in some areas.

  10. Since when has the Democratic party ver done anything but bash God and anything associated with Him?

  13. OK, do Democrats actually hope to gain anything by this, or are they just letting their inner child run riot, figuring they have nothing left to lose?

  14. Everyone wants to strengthen the weak, lift the wage earner, help the poor, establish sound security, keep out of trouble and help man permanently. But the way the Democrats do this don’t work because they’re not really after helping the poor. They use the poor to help themselves with the monies from taxes. They use the poor to stay in power so that they can continue stealing. They’re cheating right now to keep their positions. People who engage in immoral and unethical behavior cannot be moral or ethical themselves. Obama even uses God’s name to justify the slaughter of the unborn. Just how evil can one get. If video fails, go to http://divine-ripples.blogspot.com/2010/10/video-you-cannot-do-good-by-doing-evil.html

  15. This is exactly why I don’t vote dermoralrats. I am an Irish Catholic and as far back as I can remember my family has voted Republican. Been trying to get Patty Murray out for 18 years. This ad is repulsive and smacks of the kind of bigotry and hatered the libtards spew.

  16. Maybe they’re going after the folks who feel guilty for being born in America but do not themselves actually help the poor…

    Of course, that’s most Democrats…

  17. Have to disagree that this is an “anti-Catholic” ad. I wear one of those collars and I’m a Lutheran. This is an anti-Christian ad. (BTW, did they count the number of Lutherans in Minn.?)

(A bunch of angry Catholics doesn’t seem to be much of a prize…)

  22. This looks like a hate crime looking for an attorney to sue the makers

  23. Not sure who thought this was a good idea. Obviously someone on the Left felt that attacking the Catholic Church was a good strategy with a week to go before the elections.

  24. Leftist secular socialists scolding leftist Catholics socialists? To do what, exactly? To covet the assets of our neighbors in order to provide “vital funding” to the secular State, by which it can “spread the wealth around”? It appears so.

Socialism is the fraudulent offer that we can each live at the expense of others if only we would allow others to live at our expense. But as we see with North Korea and Cuba, socialism cannot deliver blessings. It only delivers curses.

And anyone who participates in this fraudulent scheme must break several of the Ten Commandments to put it into operation. Lies, coveting and theft. Shame on all of them.

  25. If it weren’t so horrible, it would be hilarious. The Catholic Church–of all people–doesn’t care about the POOR?!?! What planet do the producers of this ad live on, anyway?

As usual, truth is 180 degrees completely the OPPOSITE of whatever the Democrats are saying.

  26. The Leaders of the Democrat Party don’t understand faith in God or the people who have it.
Another epic fail for the Dumbocrats.

  27. There are nearly 600 Catholic funded hospitals in this country. How many other religions can say that?

However, after ObamaCare allows federally funded abortions in all hospitals, you’ll likely see many (if not MOST) every one of those hospitals closed or sold off.

And, it’s not the Catholic Church itself, but the Knights of Columbus have spent BILLIONS to help the poor….and it never matters what religion they are.

This ad should be handed out at every Mass between now and the 2012 elections.

  28. Those really ignoring the poor are Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner and their boss from Chicago via Kenya and San Fran Nan and wimpy Reid and Barney Frank, etc. Those robber barons are redistributing wealth from the middle class to the Wall Street veddy rich, the banks and bankers, the hedge funds and their directors. i’ve often wondered why other Christian denominations never speak out in defense of all the attacks against Catholics (except for maybe a few here & there that we never hear about).. and albeit on the other foot so to speak, sort of reminds me how anti-Islamist aka: Political Islam aka: Sharia Law Muslims don’t speak out against their evil spawn, although i have to say, not that they haven’t tried to over & over again, only to be silenced by the powers that be working in conjunction with them..

don’t even want to bring up the audacious hypocrisy of Notre Dame honoring Obama.. now there’s something they could have legitimately gone after & demeaned the Catholic Church for, not that many Catholics weren’t also silenced, not to mention arrested.. gah, it’s a vicious anti- anything not of the demonic Islamic cycle..

  33. Granny at #20:
“…they would not even consider running this for 1/2 of a millisecond if the ad depicted a muslim imam instead of a Christian.”

And THAT ad would actually be true, too. Muslim “zakat” ONLY goes to other Muslims–including to jihadists–because that helps build up the global Muslim community, or umma.
    http://www.meforum.org/2438/zakat-muslim-charity-in-context

Compare the pathetically paltry giving by Muslim countries to the Haitian earthquake victims–or even the (mostly Muslim) Pakistani flood victims and the (mostly Muslim) Indonesian tsunami victims–to the billions and billions poured in by the West.

Don’t those Arab oil barons have any spare change to help out even their fellow Muslims when disaster strikes? Evidently not–they’re too busy funding jihad. Besides, if an “act of God” hit those people, they must be being punished for something–probably for practicing some form of Islam that’s not “pure” enough.

You can see why Democrats and Muslims make common cause. Both groups see those who don’t agree with them as less than human. And both of them have a zero-sum view of the world that makes them jealously hold on to what they’ve got lest it be “wasted” on someone undeserving. What a small-minded, cramped-spirited, narrow-sighted, shrunken-hearted, soul-withering way to go through life.

  34. The Catholic Church has been real close to the
Communist party for a long, long time. Pope John Paul was the exception. He knew the evil of communism first hand. But I’m sure they simple went under ground and waited for his death. What happened at Notre Dame and Obama’s take over was an embarrassment. Fact is American Catholics are pro-abortion

  35. Well, it’s just possible that in addition to reminding these “sex is everything, baby killing is good, and gays, dogs or anything ought to get married but a man and a women” creeps, the Church is most offensive in that it is in direct competition with the super-state for the business of charity. (Why else do you suppose Obama floated the idea that charity should lose its tax break, if it weren’t for forcing everyone into dependency upon the state. Strangely , like battered wives, some souls enjoy that dependent and highly risky life style)

  36. I suppose the truth hurts!

    HeyZeus,

  42. Anti-Catholic? No.

The piece is directed against a Protestant minister who is also the Republican candidate for a state senate seat, the Rev. Dan Hall. Had you included the rest of the flyer this would have been clear.

I’m not sure this was the best piece but I am also sure that the Catholic Church does not own the clerical collar. It is worn by the majority of Protestant and Orthodox clergy in Minnesota.

Why do you choose not to show the whole mailer? It takes issue with Rev. Hall for not supporting a Minnesota Health Care bill endorsed by the Catholic Church.

Rev. Hall makes a big deal that he is a clergyman in his campaign to be a Republican state senator. The DFL respond that he seems to be a clergyman that does not care for the poor the way other clergy including the Catholic Church calls for.

  43. if my memory hasn’t failed me it seems like the Catholic vote in 2008 went in obumma’s favor! of course any bunch of loons that can elect jesse ventura, and let al franken steal a statewide election are likely to do anything, like shoot their allies, and eat their own. Let’s give these clowns to canada on dominion day, they’re leftie nutcases in the land of 10,000 mistakes.

  44. Katherine, as long as this picture is out there “as is” it is an attack on all Christian clergy of all denominations. It is both anti-Catholic and anti-Christian. If those who produced the ad wanted it to be just against a single individual they should have used a picture that did not apply to an entire class of citizens.

And BTW, the Catholic Church is not always right in their view or in what they endorse. All of this federal and state health care do not necessarily aid the poor. And Reverend Hall, not being a CATHOLIC clergyman, has every right to stand on his own beliefs without being accused of “not caring for the poor.”

Note: If you read your Bible now and then, you might discover some pertinent words expressed by a Jewish Rabbi I happen to know of a couple of thousand years ago. Something on the order of “the poor will always be with you.”

  45. Welcome to The Peoples Republic of Minnesota. The DFL (Dumb Fracking Liberals aka Democrat/Farm/Labor) has been selling indulgences and promising cargo for decades. Most of the state is on the dole in one way or another.

I’m stuck in Betty McCommie’s district. Ms. Collett is trying to challenge but we’ve got so many Section 8 rent subsidy abusers and food stamp abusers, etc., that it’ll be a miracle. I’ll be there to pull the handle for Collett but I think it’ll be a lot like McLame vs. Barry here ( except Collett is a much better candidate).

re: [endorsed by the Catholic Church]

    just a sample:

that’s quite a wide brush you’re painting with..

Bishop Aquila: Catholic health care bill endorsements
    ‘severely damaged’ common good

[Self-described Catholic groups who endorsed the health care bill despite objections “severely damaged” the common good and diluted the pro-life witness of the U.S. bishops and the Catholic faithful, asserted Bishop Samuel J. Aquila of Fargo, North Dakota in a Tuesday statement.

    [..]

Additionally, the bishop said, these groups and some Catholic legislators and laity have “weakened the bonds of communion” within the Church and diluted “her witness to justice for all, from the moment of conception until natural death.”

    [..]

Bishop Aquila lamented that some Catholics are “more faithful to their political parties and ideological beliefs than to the teachings of Jesus
    Christ and his Church.”]

    Foxfier @ 4:10 pm #50

[You can see the second mailing here. It also refers to Hall as “Preacher Hall” (I can’t find any evidence that Hall refers to himself that way). Why the DFL would use the image of a man in a Roman collar to depict a lay chaplain who is a member of a nondenominational church remains mysterious. At least we can dispense with the claims that the mailing is anti-Catholic, although it may be anti-wise. My apologies for jumping to conclusions.

Another update: “I’ve never worn a Roman collar,” Dan Hall told me. “No one in my church does.” Asked why he thought the DFL would use such an image, he said, “I have no idea. You’re offending all kinds of church people, whether Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish.” Hall explained that, probably as a result of this dustup, he’s received a great deal of media requests, concluding, “In the end, it’s probably going to help me.”

Still another update (the last, I hope): That isn’t the only Catholic-looking image the DFL is using in its campaign mailers. Check this one out. What is that, a side chapel? And St. Anthony? Might be a good time for the DFL to say a little prayer to him. Maybe he can help them find their common sense.]

Then they turn around and run ads like this. How is it that Catholics and other Christians can’t see that they are being used and manipulated?

  56. Russ Carnahan tries to smear Ed Martin…now this campaign…does anyone notice a trend?

  57. I got this mailing, and another like it. The thrust of its argument is that when “Republicans gutted our state’s health care… Preacher Hall remained silent,” ending with the tagline “Preacher Dan Hall: Pushing politics from the pulpit.” I’m thinking the repeated mentions of the word “preacher,” along with the clumsy generic “man of the cloth” imagery were intended to be SCARY.

What gets me is the punchline: He was SILENT. Is that all they’ve got? Thanks for letting me know that Mr. Hall has never DONE or SAID a stupid thing in his life, cause if he had, we’d be hearing about it now. Oh, and also, I didn’t know he was religious; that makes me like him more. My vote’s decided!

  58. bg at #49

Bless you for referencing Bishop Samuel Aquila of Fargo, ND! He was one of my heroes during the healthcare-reform debate. I kept wishing that my own shamelessly liberal pastor would have read and taken to heart Bishop Aquila’s pastoral letter of August 2009, which was very strong on the Catholic principle of “subsidiarity”–i.e., not delegating to larger, more impersonal, less accountable, further-from-home entities such as the federal government those things that can be done best by smaller, more involved, closer-to-home entities, in a sort of ascending order starting with family, then neighborhood or school or church, then workplace or community organization, then diocese or local government, etc.
    http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/bishop_aquila_outlines_four_principles_for_genuine_health_care_reform/

I treasured Bishop Aquila’s wisdom and outspokenness on this issue because so many of the other bishops–and certainly our local liberal clergy–were just plain stupid on this.

I also treasured the writing of another common-sense, clear-thinking, Midwestern bishop, Walker Nickless, Bishop of Sioux City, IA, who expressed a well-grounded skepticism of government bureaucracy and a refreshing appreciation of the way everyone benefits from a healthy, viable private sector. Bishop Nickless seems to have a solid, sophisticated grasp of basic economics that unfortunately is woefully lacking among many clergymen.
    http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=3891

Both Bishop Aquila and Bishop Nickless were very concerned about the inevitable rationing of health care that would result from a government takeover, as well as the loss of freedom-of-conscience rights of pro-life medical personnel.

If the U.S. bishops’ conference would have made Aquila’s and Nickless’ arguments the key principles of their own strategy, and fought vigorously for those principles, and encouraged all American Catholics to take them to heart and advocate them, we would not today be saddled with ObamaCare.

  59. I am a farmer and I am Catholic, I called and let them know how I felt about this ad, the lady I spoke with apoligized and said it was a “misunderstading of the real message” I urge everyone to call and voice his or her concern, of course, be polite!

  61. The left’s problem with Catholic Charities is that it is not government-funded and thus not government-controlled. And therefore it funds only those activities that are in accordance with it’s own principles and will not fund abortions, gay rights, etc. Therefore, since it discriminates against activities they favor it (in their reasoning, it seems) discriminates against the people engages in those activities. On that basis the “evil” it does (engaging in such discrimination and making those discriminated against feel bad) outweighs the good it does and therefore that good doesn’t count.
