CBS newsman Bob Schieffer pressed GOP Leader John Boehner on his filthy smoking habit yesterday on Face the Lib. It’s funny how this question never came up during his interviews with far left democrat Barack Obama, huh?

It was an ambush:

The Politico reported, via Free Republic:

CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer got personal with the top House Republican on “Face the Nation” Sunday, asking him whether he’d consider kicking his smoking habit if he becomes speaker.

Schieffer, a former smoker and cancer survivor, noted that House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) has taken $340,000 from the tobacco industry during the course of his career. The discussion:

Bob Schieffer: “They’ve been the largest contributor to your political campaigns over the year. How do you square that with the fact that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in this country, 435,000 people, their deaths are linked to cancer, that’s 1 in 5. How do you justify that in your own mind?”

Rep. Boehner: “Bob, tobacco is a legal product in America. The American people have a right to decide for themselves whether they want to partake or not. There are lots of things that we deal with and come in contact with every day, from alcohol to food to cigarettes, a lot of the things that aren’t good for our health. But the American people ought to have the right to make those decisions on their own.”

Schieffer tried arguing that the American people also had the right to shoot themselves, but that didn’t mean it should be encouraged, to which Boehner responded:

“Well listen, I wish I didn’t have this bad habit — and it is a bad habit — you’ve had it, you’ve dealt with it, but it’s something that I choose to do, and you know at some point, maybe I’ll decide I’ve had enough of it.”

  1. Hope all the preciously pious will look at CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer to see what they themselves look and sound like when they are lecturing their do-gooderness.

  2. We all know that it is OK for a democrat\socialist to have bad habits and bad judgment but the republican has to be purer than fresh fallen snow. Double standards.
Hope the voters are finally realizing the double standard from the socialist msm and will vote against the brainwashing.

  3. Sic …him John Boehner

“Oh, what a web we weave..to deceive. (something like that) What a waste of air time.

Sit back the attacks are going to get worse and to the end they will be out right lies that the moron/liberal/communist/demo rat/media/scums of the earth will be doing.

  4. Isn’t the basic question why do they do it?

  5. No one would have ever heard of Sheiffer, save his cohorts at the Ft. Worth Star Telegram, had he not been told by his boss to go pickup Mother Oswald and carry her to the Dallas County Jail to see her son on Nov. 22, 1963.
We possibly would have been spared all of those years of enduring Rather’s liberal slant of the news had he not been in Dallas that same day. Rather went “Geraldo” at the local CBS affiliate station that day and the rest is history.
Yeah, that was a great day for ambitious, single station, single paper reporters.

  6. This Tea Party Activist’s answer to these moral busybodies -

From C.S. Lewis: “It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

  7. Bob Scheiffert- Stupid old man.

  8. Boehner could have responded with, “Bob, don’t you think you should have asked this identical question to President Obama first?”. After you ask him, then you can ask me.

  9. Bob needs a hobby.

  10. auntie em

    Is it called “retirement?”

Truthful Democrat: Well Bob, that’s 435, 000 fewer hypochondriacs running to the doctor with whatever little ache or pain that we are going to have to pay for for. So actually it saves us money.

  12. Silly old white males should be barred from news tv.

  13. F*ck the fascists. I’m really starting to get pist. Bbbbut, WE all need to keep cooool. Keep calm. Sit tight [I'm not my brother's keeper (though I will carry him upon my shoulder, should he fall). The best time to quit ... ain't necessarily while you're in a life raft, out on the open sea (after the engine has exploded and the ship's on fire). Smoke em if ya gotts. Unless you're in Santa Monica, Calabassas, Burbank, etc. etc. etc. (Me? Six weeks on the wagon ... yo mama wuzz a ho Barry!]

    November Second. It doth approach.

THERE WILL BE AN OCTOBER SURPRISE.

So, don’t be surprised by it. It WILL be evil. It WILL be filthy. It WILL be nasty.

    EXPECT NOTHING LESS.

From the traitors who now seek to destroy … these United States of America. From within. By any method, any means … at their disposal.

  14. How about this response:

“Bob, I am glad you were able to quit smoking. As to my smoking, I submit that it’s none of your business.

Did you ask Ted Kennedy if he was going to give up drinking?

Did you ask Barack Obama if HE was going to give up smoking?

Did you ask Patrick Kennedy if he was going to give up liquor and drugs?

Did you ask Nancy Pelosi if she was going to give up Botox?

Did you ask Barney Frank if he was going to give up cabana boys?

  15. You know theyre desperate when they have to ask stupid questions like that!

  16. Tell it to the Chimney in Chief

  17. Imagine the sympathetic treatment a federal law breaking pot grower/smoker would have received on the same broadcast?

The message of the Left: “Please stop smoking cigarettes, and start smoking pot, crack, and heroin. Then and only then will you be truly cool and Leftist.”

  18. That line of questioning sums up the entire liberal mentality. Big brother on steroids…

These people will control, regulate, ban, and prohibit anything that suits their fancy, and then proceed to exclude themselves from their own regulations. I’m so sick and tired of these people. This country was founded on the principles of freedom, self determination, and personal responsibility. Those who would ignore those principles and trample the Constitutional freedoms that Americans have fought so hard for over the past 200 years are TRAITORS, and should be treated as the enemies of the state that they are.

  19. Barry was noticeably chewing gum during his community service photo-op on Saturday.

  20. Dave Williams,

    Obama’s habits are state secrets.

  21. Don’t forget the proximity of this interview to Obama’s decision to start bashing Boehner… a matter of days. Obama decides the course, the media falls in line with the new plan of attack. Obama’s not the dog, the media is his lap dog.

The media is a disgrace… transparent shills for Obama and the Democrats.

  22. “Mr. Boehner I’m going to ask you this question because I’m not objective about this….”

This doesn’t make any sense Bob, perhaps this is what you meant to say:

“Mr. Boehner I’m going to ask you this question, and just to be upfront with you I’m not objective about this because….”

    Total. Loon.

  23. So Bob Schieffer is only PRO-CHOICE when the baby gets killed??

  24. One of my friends and I were sharing a smoke when we were accosted by one of the anti smoking brigades self righteous minions.
“Don’t you know smoking is bad for your health,” she warbled in that smarmy tone they use.
My friend looked at her and simply replied, “So is F***ing with me”.
On another occasion I was enjoying a smoke when another woman approached me. “Must you smoke that stinky thing,” she said.
“Oh but I must,” I replied. “My parole officer says that it helps calm my nerves and keeps me from doing the terrible things that got me in so much trouble in the first place.”
    She took off double time.

  25. Boehner could have said, “Hey, Bob, if smoking is good enough for the president, it’s good enough for me so back off, bub…”

  26. What puzzles me, is how the fukkk Boehners smoking becomes news in Schieffers fossilized mind, yet the President of the United States smoking isn’t news.

  27. Just think how much money is collected from cigarette taxes. Should everyone who is smoking quits tomorrow, that “revenue” will have to be made up somewhere. Personally, I don’t care if someone wishes to smoke. It doesn’t bother me. And I would be careful tramping down that road that it costs too much to treat xyz. Someday you could find yourself in that same category.

  28. BTW – Take a look at the series of photos from which the one at the top of this item (2nd photo: http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1866765_1815175,00.html).

Barry Hussein is wearing a wedding ring. Was he married before?

  29. If we were really worried about the health of Americans we could outlaw the weed, but look at the taxes lost and the lawyers without someone to sue. The Democratic Party needs tobbacco.

  30. Lidturds love to display their superior moral virtue, which suggests classic low self-esteem and envy.

  31. OT by way of free republic/right tv……i thought the non-white tea party member was a figment of our collective imaginations…

  32. Rush gave this comment today…

Isn’t it funny that Bob Schieffer knew nothing at all, was clueless, about the DOJ dropping the New Black Panthers’ civil rights voting case, he just had’nt heard about it.

However, Schieffer was completely up to speed about Boehner smoking.

  33. It’s “Deface the Nation.”

  34. Where do the busy bodies go as science finds solutions to the problems of cancer, obesity and other medical maladies? Here’s a link from a week or so ago, hat tip Instapundit, to an article in Popular Science mag on a discovery of a new technique to counter cancer and a host of other problems. http://tinyurl.com/365e7y2
As a non-smoker, I am happy smokers can’t blow smoke anywhere they like. Yet the nanny staters have taken too much freedom from us in their zeal to control the rubes.
Technological advancement will rob the left of many of their political arguments. It already has. Those looking to advance free markets would do well to advertise specific examples of this phenomenon.

  35. Do American people have the right to shoot themselves? As pointless a law as it may be, I thought suicide is illegal in most, if not all, states.

  36. Watching CBS News is legal, too. But we know that watching it is a way to pick up all kinds of nasty untruths and distortions.

Wouldn’t the country be better off if Bob Schiffer and Andrew Breitbart teamed up to persuade the country to stop watching CBS News?
