This was like watching Obama and Pelosi wrestling with the jobs market…

The real action at the US Open took place at the Arthur Ashe Stadium yesterday. Three tennis fans were arrested.

  1. Very classy there.

  2. Yet another case of “when rude meets crazy.”

  3. Based on the video the younger guy was obviously verbally out of control and likely very rude, to the point he could have been kicked out just for that if they contacted security. But the old guy and woman turned it into a physical assault. They and others will likely be sued for assault on the mouthy guy, and the jerk will win. No matter how rude someone is, do not turn it into a physical assault, contact authorities and they will deal with it.

  4. ++

    eh, don’t know why, but it sure looks to me like the guy was sitting when
    for whatever reason, the lady & old man approached and got in his face..

  6. Look at the video again. It was the old guy who lost his footing/balance and went over backward onto the seats below him. The young guy didn’t push him into the seats. The old guy did that. The assault charge should be leveled against the old guy.

  7. The foul mouth punk deserved to get his dick knocked in the dirt. If anyone nearby had any class or a pair they would have stood up to this pissant before it came to blows with the elderly couple.
    Listening to the asshat that provided the video it is easy to understand why New Yorkers are not welcome in civilized society.

  8. When did the guidos from the Jersey shore get tickets to the US Open Tournament?

    Mouthy, guido got smacked by the geriatric. Classic!

    From the epic beard man (67 year old Viet Nam vet) beating down a thug on a bus and now this guy. The lack of respect for people in general and more importantly, one’s elders is coming around to bite some punks in the rump.

    Take em to the woodshed grampa. More lessons are long overdue.

  9. facts:
    the young guy was hollering the f-word during the match, the woman asked him to stop, he basically told her to shove off

    the old guy put her behind him then confronted the young guy, when the young guy got up the old guy grabbed him and then fell over

    red cards to both of them, the older folks screwed up by not just calling the ushers now they’re going to get banned along with the mouthy guy – they’re all idiots IMAO

  10. @CT
    Foul mouth punk?

    How do you know what he was saying?You read lips?
    He was minding his own business when that couple,for whatever reason,decided to get in his face and not let it go.
    You sure it wasn’t her who was the foul mouth bitch?
    Next time you’re minding your own business and someone gets in your face and won’t let it go and then you get jumped,please be sure to not defend yourself.

    you obviously missed the old mans attack, the young guys retreat, only
    to be confronted by a so called lady attempting to punch his lights out..

  12. I actually remember when tennis was a rather genteel sport.

    don’t rightly know whether or not those are the “facts” as yet.. the way i
    read it, it seems to be nothing more than mere conjecture (not even one
    “ear witnesses” has been “quoted”)..

    now here’s a fact for you:

    if they were so offended (for whatever reason), why didn’t they go get the stadium police (of which it sure seemed to me was exactly what the young guy was telling them to do)..

    (btw, the story doesn’t seem to be
    in sync with the video, go figure..)

    ==

  14. ++

    my bottom line opinon:

    i can’t say the young guy was right.. but i can
    say the old man & so called lady were wrong..

    ==

  15. Leaving aside the fact the mouthy punk should have been dragged out by the feet, leaving his teeth and epidermis on the concrete . . . why would anyone bother to sit so far from the action the players seem ant-like and the ball would be invisible?

    As far as the older gentleman going after the punk – no sound track, but I’d guess the latter went way too far in the foul language directed at the woman. They should have called security – agreed.

  16. When a young man addresses an old man or woman, regardless of the situation, it is the young persons responsibility to show respect. If the old person is in the wrong you should stand your ground but do so respectfully and with kindness. If the young man felt harassed he should have sought out security. That’s what they are there for.

    ADVICE TO OUR YOUNGER CROWD: Old people did not get old watching TV. To pick a fight or escalate a tense situation is suicidal. An old man will cut you or shoot you. They will not fight fair. Think about it.

  17. At the local football stadium, there’s a text number you can use to report belligerent, drunk, obnoxious, rude, or violent fans. More venues probably need stuff like that. Alcohol and narcissism create these kinds of situations.

  18. I believe there is reference to “fighting words” in the records of the U.S. Supreme Court. So there may be cause for the man to have done what he did, that may possibly stand up in court.

    The young man was sitting there cussing a blue streak according to the New York Post. Anyone who defends him against the couple based on smarmy nanny-state legalities is a weenie.

    (oops, is them fightin woids?)

  19. ++

    respect, huh..

    far as i can tell, the young man was definitely not the aggressor in this case, it’s on film for cripes sake.. and i’m no “lip reader” but i didn’t even note an F-U coming from his mouth, anyone??

  20. Wow, I’m used to stuff like that only from soccer and ice hockey games over here.

  21. I think the younger guy sat in the couple’s seats.
    But all the seats in the area were empty! And Like one poster said, the players looked like ants from guido heaven.
    the couple could have just sat dn a half-row over.
    It was the same viewy.
    Take these matches out of NYC. The venue is lousy

  22. The worst part is, that was a freaking awesome match going on. The needless distraction was just annoying.

  23. “No matter how rude someone is, do not turn it into a physical assault”

    Nope.

    Some punk like that starts running his mouth at my wife? Assault would be the least of his problems.

    Now, one – my wife doesn’t escalate situations and would never even be involved to the point it reached.

    And two, I’m fully aware there are consequences for assaulting somebody. That’s fine. Book me.

    Maybe next time the punk would think twice before running his mouth.

  24. Greetings:

    Imagine going to a tennis game and having some real sport breakout !!!

  25. ++

    gee, with all the empty seats available, it’s a wonder many didn’t flee to “sounder” grounds, or even report him to the stadium police, hmmm..

    ==

  26. That punk should have been dealt with by security long before the old guy got involved with him. They obviously didn’t want to let the older couple pass…the one guy was slouched down to block them and the punk on the aisle was mouthing off. If I had been there and security didn’t come down I would have acted too…although at my age there is no such thing as a “fair” fight…would just have shrunk his crown jewels and walked up to security to let them arrest me…would have opted for a jury trial…Don’t mess with old people…you can’t hurt us. After all how much would I lose even with the death penalty…

    It has been my argument for years that the death penalty should only be for 4 transgressions:1. Failing to say, “I’m sorry,” 2. Failing to say, “excuse me,” 3. Failure to say, “thank you,” and 4.Child molestation and/or rape. Leave the kids alone and be civil and we can always deal with it one way or the other…there is no excuse for discourtesy.

  27. Classic beat down from an old dude.He shouldn’t file charges cuz of shear embrassment!

  28. This loud mouth punk uses the F-bomb and you think he’s not going to get a reaction from this husband? My wife would have knocked his block off and of course the loser wants a police report. Don’t’ want to get punched in the face, don’t talk smack.

  29. ebayer,

    Do you really want to stand up for the young puke? There were more sources for what went down than the Youtube video. Like I said if anyone near him had a pair he would have been knocked on his ass a lot sooner. Had it been me it would it would have been over quick.

  30. Here’s another video of the altercation from much closer so you can hear some of the verbal exchange, especially the younger guy tossing out a barrage of obscenities at the lady:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E19D_-h9MIo

    As you can see at around the 35 second mark, the younger guy says to her, “I don’t give a f— what anybody wants? I’ve got a lot of money on the game…” and follows that up with several more obscenities, as well as some variation on the lame “I paid for my ticket so I can do what I want” defense that infuriates me (didn’t everyone around you pay for theirs, too?).

    I can see everyone deserving some blame for this situation getting out of hand, but I can’t see anyone defending the younger guy, especially based on his demeanor and attitude. After all, there’s a reason why many of the people in close proximity to the situation are seeming to support the older lady and man by wanting the younger guy tossed out of the venue. Also, according to the New York Times, the younger guy was “cursing and acting obnoxiously, according to the police,” which would explain why others wanted the younger guy tossed. Plus, the young guy’s friend sitting next to him wants nothing to do with it, as he walks away and sits a few rows back after the scuffle breaks out between his friend and the old guy. I’m sure that a lot happened before the video cameras started recording that would’ve illustrated that this younger guy was the major cause of this incident. The lady and the older man, who is apparently her father, probably should have got security to do it from the beginning but personally having had to tell disruptive people to shut up at various public events (e.g., movies), it’s hard for me to get too upset with them for taking matters in their own hands.

    made my local news today..

    they showed the woman slapping him, then the man attacking him, then
    the woman smacking him again, no mention of anything else except they
    were banned until 2012..

    ==

  33. ++

    what we didn’t see..

    whatever the guy did, he sure expressed the utmost restraint..

    being an elder myself (& a woman), i truly don’t think i could have
    held on to that much respect for my elders when i was younger..

    who did those people think they were, his parents??

    ps: that loud mouth (fitb) heard in the film should have respected
    his elders and gone over there and thrown the bum out himself..

    at least it would have been more of a fair fight.. the kid was not about
    to strike his elders no matter how threatening & belligerent they were..
