It became o.k. to “be a bigot and a racist” again after we figured out that those terms mean nothing and we have to make a decision after considering all options with “an open mind”. After doing so we have learned that Islam is a violent movement that seeks to destroy the West and either bring non-Muslims into submission or kill them. Two days ago another blog, IOwnTheWorld, it had a link to Bare Naked Islam which had video of a muslim man/father aiding a 12 year old in sawing off another person’s head. I couldn’t watch it myself, but read the comments on IOTW.
Aside from the gore, people commented on the heartlessness instilled in the boy. It was like a dad teaching his son how to cut a fish.

I live in New York. I was here on September 11.
I understand, as both George W. Bush and Barack Obama have made clear, that the terrorists are Islamic fundamentalists perverting a great religion, not to be confused with ordinary Muslims.
Every religion has, at one time or another been used by fundamentalists of all stripes.
Just think about this. What if some terrorist claiming to represent your religion attacked us. Then what if, because of that attack, people associated you with the terrorists, yelled at you and called you insulting names, and prevented you from worshipping where you wanted to.

My condolences if you lost anyone in the 9/11 attack. I can empathize with the feeling of seeing your city in pain; I still can’t look at any media about the Katrina devastation without crying.
However, I lived in the middle east, and I must disagree with your assessment that Islam is a great religion. Unless you think women walking silently behind men, covered in a black cloth sack from head to toe with only their down-cast eyes showing, in constant danger of death, mutilation, and/ or abandonment, and executions of homosexuals constitutes a great religion. I did not only see this poor treatment of women when I lived in the middle east, I see it now in the US when I go to Walmart. I get so angry every time I see a woman covered head to toe in this heat and humidity walking behind a man in shorts that I fear I’m not living up to the second part of the greatest commandment.
As an ex-pat in a “progressive” middle eastern country, I “only” had to wear sleeved, ankle-length dresses at all times. If I was assaulted for my provocative apparel (which happened once), the only consequence was that it sucked to be me.
As has been said before, if there were truly peace-loving members in Islam, they would root out the terrorists themselves instead of funding and sheltering them. When they do, and treat women like human beings, I’ll reconsider some of my stances.
I have heard there are around 100 mosques in New York. If this is true, why do they need this building so badly? If their true purpose is healing and to bring people together, why insist on building more gender segregated places of worship, that non-muslims won’t be able to enter, in an area where there is significant opposition? How does this bring healing and togetherness?

All my life I have heard “we have never been attacked on American soil.” Well, we were in 2001 and it was brutal and premeditated to the last detail.
