Loyola University in Chicago refused to allow Karl Rove to speak on campus this fall. University officials said it was due to their tax status but they have allowed liberal speakers on campus in the past.
Evan Gassman at the Young America’s Foundation sent out this press release today:
HERNDON, VA –While many college students are currently enjoying their time off, some are utilizing this summer to prepare for the upcoming school year. Conservative activists at Loyola University Chicago were planning to bring best-selling author and Young America’s Foundation lecturer Karl Rove to their campus for the fall semester. Administrators had other plans, however.
University officials denied the request to host Karl Rove, arguing that due to their 501(c)(3) tax status, they cannot host a “political” speaker before the midterm elections. Those with even the faintest knowledge of tax law understand that is simply not the case.
Kimberly A. Moore, director of student affairs and Greek affairs at Loyola University Chicago, told students in an email that, “The timing of this event is problematic given the campaign cycle. Loyola has to maintain impartiality in order to protect our tax-exempt status.” It is important to note that Karl Rove is not working for any campaign this season.
As if that weren’t egregious enough, Loyola University Chicago has a history of hosting partisan speakers on election years. On September 1, 2004, Howard Dean was allowed to speak on campus. Just a couple weeks later, third party candidate Ralph Nader not only spoke on campus, but it was also advertised as a campaign event and donations were solicited.
After long discussions, Loyola officials offered to host the event after the midterm elections, but given Karl Rove’s busy schedule, that is simply not possible.
Sean Vera, the student who is trying to bring Karl Rove to his campus, commented on the situation: “It is very disconcerting to see Loyola not live up to the standards of academic freedom that they frequently preach about. I never expected Loyola would prevent the free exchange of ideas and that they would do so in such a partisan manner.”
UPDATE: Apparently, Loyola University had no problem allowing Maoist SDS members hold their reunion on campus.

Unbelievable.

Academic Freedom these days really means freedom to toe the party line, to assume the correct attitude, to spout the approved line of thinking, so this really is no surprise at all.
Militant Conservative commented:
Wake up young whipper snapper the world hates the true productive class. Rove would have planted alot of ideas in the young skulls full of mush to go find the answers too. This cannot happen so close to a midterm election. cannot have the truth popping out. this is highly inconvenient for the left. Guess what, the whole of America is going to be highly opposed to the WH agenda cuz young skulls full o mush cannot get a JOB. WHAAAAA!!!!
Learn conservatism, either in school or the school of hard knocks. Your choice dunces.
powder is dry and truth sucks.

So, what’s with the Catholic Church these days? (Where’s the pope when you need him?)
This foolishness is almost as bad as Notre Dame covering a cross when Obummer came to speak. Where’s the historical courage of the Catholic Church to stand proudly for things? (Very disappointedly…)

Is it possible that Loyola University knows full well that being the host to some speakers would expose its tax status to greater scrutiny than would its being the host of others? Most such institutions are quite risk averse and can be expected to act in their long term best interest.

I graduated from a Jesuit university. The university administration was clearly Liberal back then. These days, in keeping with the current Communist surge, I’m sure that they are as openly hostile to anything Conservative as they are at Loyola. I suppose that Georgetown’s new relationship with Andy Stern, a Communist, is a further indication that these schools, and indeed perhaps even the Jesuit community, are either in the bag for the Communists, or they are genuinely afraid of the Marxists who currently run the government. It seems to me that they would do well to stand on conviction and principle, rather than cower in fear. By doing so they aid and abet the forces of evil that are loose in the world.

They should file a class action suit against the university to get the money back for their tuition. Loyola has committed a fraud. They have told these students that they will educate them and expose them to a variety of opinions but all they are interested in is indoctrinating them and limiting their speech and their right to hear others speak.
In short, a degree from Loyola has become worth much, much less than it was due to the actions of its administrators.

Parents, pull your kids out of college. I’m serious. They are yet another beast that needs to be starved. Your kids can go to college at a later date or you can help them select a trade school to attend now. Or both: trade school now to learn a trade to get them by until they can return to college without being brain washed into libturdism.

Starve the crap universities .. oh, wait! Who has money to send their kids to Uni anyway?
It’s already shaping up to chaos in some states. Arizona’s ASU has a 70% drop-out rate – New Mexico’s wondering where the students are disappearing to – 70% drop out. Guess one can’t get a degree in “Partying” after all.
The country will go Tea Party, out of raw necessity and basic survival – the Left has screwed up EVERYTHING it touches. Half the college degrees are worthless crap, watch for overpriced idiot majors being shut down – majors that should have never been offered in the first place, universities that grew like The Blob over communities, taking over normal private sector functions like housing and food, and their beloved mass transit, will be shedding these budget-busting, egotistical monopolistic services to stay afloat.
CHicago univerisities especially deserve to be boycotted to collapse – their influence on our entire education system has been absolutely toxic and they’ve provided shelter for destructive radicals like Bill Ayers.

Loyola University in Chicago is clearly playing a political game in that they have decided to only allow one political side to be presented.
Therefore the IRS should revoke their 501(c)(3) tax status.
Clearly, this is not a university that supports diversity of opinion.

I thought it was slightly humorous several years ago when I overheard someone say that they dailed prayed for the conversion of the Jesuits. It is not that funny any more. There seems to be something about Jesuit institutions, universities in particular, that is fundamentally hostile to those of us who try to be faithful to the magisterium of the Church and the basic tenets of the constitution. I’m not sure what has happened to the Order in the last quarter century, and I personally know there are still a few good Jesuits remaining. But for the most part they seem to be gleefully pursuing the destruction from the inside of any institution that upholds traditional values or basic common sense.
I am a graduate of Loyola University New Orleans and would no more think of giving money to the alma “mater” than I would to funding an al Queda bomb plot.
