It’s days like these that you begin to wonder is there anyone in this administration who is not a communist, radical, socialist, terror-sympathizer?
You really have to wonder some days.
Guess what? White farmer-hater Shirley Sherrod is linked to Bill Ayers.
Reader Dude Meister discovered this information:
An announcement of Ms. Sherrod’s July 2009 appointment to her USDA position at ruraldevelopment.org gives off quite a few clues:
RDLN Graduate and Board Vice Chair Shirley Sherrod was appointed Georgia Director for Rural Development by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack on July 25. Only days earlier, she learned that New Communities, a group she founded with her husband and other families (see below) has won a thirteen million dollar settlement in the minority farmers law suit Pigford vs Vilsack.
This must-read story at Illinois Review and The Washington Examiner also reveals that Ms. Sherrod’s husband is a former honcho in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee back in the 1960’s. You can read more about it in Bill Ayers book “Fugitive Days.” Yes, that Bill Ayers. He was involved in SNCC as well.

After re-reading this story several times I’ve officially decided that this website HAS to be a joke. So because Sherrod’s husband was in SNCC, and Bill Ayers also was in SNCC, there is some sort of nefarious implication? Do you guys even know what SNCC was??? And how is it that by 12:13pm July 21 there is still a story like this on Sherrod when it is widely agreed upon that she is a victim of character assassination. Really reaching on this one. I also love how this story just happened to come out after NAACP asked Tea Party to repudiate its racist elements. Can’t believe cut up Sherrod clips were the best that the Right could come up with to try and refute the claim by showing that someone from the left was racist too. Just, wow.

I just can’t make my mind up about this website. It seems to consist of an inconsistent mix of genuinely worthy reporting and outright silliness. I think the ratio is about 50/50. Jim Hoft is sensible and accurate in one post, then the next he’s going way over the top, stretching things way past any reasonable notion of elasticity and generally trying to spice things up with contrived drama. This is one example.
That’s not to say I don’t enjoy this blog immensely and appreciate some of the fine work that JH contributes to the cause, but damn his output needs pruning sometimes.

Then an abrupt about-face within 24 hours (and the full-length video has not changed my evaluation of her). Team Obama is infamous for being slow as molasses when it’s for doing the right thing, breakneck speed to ramrod through legislation that the majority of Americans do not want. Heck, Obama took 6 weeks to choose a dog and 12 days to formally acknowledge the Gulf oil spill, for crikey sake. When Team Obama acts quickly for “the greater good,” red flags should be raised and warning bells sounded.
Something here smells quite fishy, and it isn’t Friday.

Furthermore, I was just as irate by Sherrod’s assessment that everyone should jump into government work because you can basically be a post and still get regular raises. It’s true, I mean, but she was advertising to exploit government’s inherent attraction to lazy-butts.

Somebody with resources should look into the EEOC in Los Angeles (equal employment opportunity commission). I had a pending case there against a former employer. Right after Obama took office, my case worker (who was white… was fired), and the entire office was staffed by NOBODY but black women. I didn’t think much of it at first, but a few weeks later, my 2+ year old case was dropped by them and they told me to fend for myself. (i’m white)

I would be willing to talk about my “awakening” (I call it coming to my senses;o).
You know folks, if you’re going to take the time (and take up the space to respond here) would you please stay on topic (i.e. the article you attach your comment to) so a true, honest, and forthright debate/discussion can happen here? This isn’t the only blog where comments disintegrate into low-brow, sophomoric, gotchas but maybe, just maybe we could turn the tide from stupid 3 year old behavior into an intelligent sharing of views that sets a standard, rather than just being a continuation of nonsensical one-downmanship postings. It get really frustrating to try and read through these comments and see again and again how it deteriorates into a childish back and forth rather than something where a person wants to stay in the conversation and have a real exchange of views and positions.

Like I said, this blog is a mixed bag. Some of JH’s work is magnificent, other times he comes across as a drama queen desperate to stir up a story. I don’t pull any punches, just tell it like it is and I’m sure Jim is old and mature enough to take criticism on the chin and he doesn’t need sycophantic, cheerleading goons like you to hoot and bray for him.
I know fine well what “real” journalism is. It isn’t anything in the liberal mainstream media, but neither is it a blog post which triumphantly bleats about some rather uninteresting “link” between a woman and Bill Ayers which doesn’t live up to the headline. We have enough to go on against the left without this kind of mindless trash which unfortunately is going to leave GP open to ridicule. Sherrod isn’t the issue here. The issue is the NAACP and the Obama administration. Sherrod wasn’t the issue in the video, the reaction of the audience was.

More to the topic at hand: No, President Obama did not only himself a disservice by not mixing it up in his youth, he did the nation a disservice.
It is a good thing to make friends along the way with others with different political and life outlooks, to butt heads with others’ ideas and still hold on to the friendship.
Avoidance, such as proclaimed by Obama on choosing friends, makes it difficult to see other perspectives and acceptance of other perspectives as a normal element of life.
So, yeah, seemingly, all of Obama’s associations have been/are with way out there folks that have almost nothing in common with everyday Americans. I read every word of both the stories you linked to, and I don’t see a single word about Shirley Sherrod having anything to do with Bill Ayers or the Weather Underground. The SNCC had some bad apples in it, but it also had some very good apples, too. I don’t think it’s fair to condemn SNCC just because Bill Ayers may have been a supporter of it. I am a member of the Catholic Church–which happens to contain some outrageously rotten apples, always has. But that doesn’t make the whole Catholic Church a rotten institution. Nor does it make me a rotten person myself. Well, similarly with SNCC.

Secondly, it’s been shown that the video Andrew B. was working from was clipped, that he didn’t see the WHOLE speech. The decades-old incident that Ms. Sherrod related was in the context of the story she was telling about her CONVERSION from racism. She was talking about what she’d learned from it and how she’d changed. She went on to become a friend and advocate of that white couple.
To hold her earlier mistakes against her would be like taking something that John Newton (the author of the hymn “Amazing Grace”) wrote about his old, pre-conversion days as a slaveship operator–and using that 24 years later to paint him as an unrepentant slave-trafficker! The whole point of the story is that his heart CHANGED.
Please tell me what I’m missing here.

Racism isn’t dead, and the Republican party seems to be its bastion. This was an effort by Breitbart to punish the NAACP because it had been accusing the teabaggers of racism; it has soundly backfired, because trying to damage an organization working to end racism is simply another manifestation of racism. Sherrod is fighting back, pointing out what the right-wing media is actually trying to do.
“They were looking for the result they got yesterday,” she said of Fox. “I am just a pawn. I was just here. They are after a bigger thing, they would love to take us back to where we were many years ago. Back to where black people were looking down, not looking white folks in the face, not being able to compete for a job out there and not be a whole person.”
The right-wing political base is truly vile. I looked at a few of their blogs, and despite the thoroughness of Breitbart’s credibility implosion and the way this story has blown up in their faces, they’re still trying to defend it. I’m not going to link to them, but instead, look at this brief and effective deconstruction of one such apologia by John Cole. Are the teaparty promoters racist? Hell, yes. Either that or they’re just brain-damaged idiots, I can’t tell.
The important lesson, though, is that this is about class politics and class warfare — not the phony kind the Republicans decry, which is all about the horrible way the obscenely rich are hindered from becoming pornographically rich, but the real one, the one fought in an America where children still go to bed hungry and everyone has to worry about the porous social safety net. This is a country where a middle-class person can be completely wiped out by a serious illness in the family, where the poor are kept paddling in place trying to make ends meet and never get an opportunity to advance themselves. Sherrod said that, too.
Sherrod delivered an address on race, class, and government that wove together reflections of the murder of her father at the hands of white man, her early-life misgivings about the American South, her work organizing the community in the face of violent racism, and her eventual recognition as a government official working with local farmers that class, not race, was the dominant matter. “It’s not just about black people, it’s about poor people,” Sherrod said. “We have to get to the point where race exists but it doesn’t matter.”
That should frighten Republicans more than their phony race-baiting story: when Americans wake up to their common cause despite Republican efforts to sow divisions by race, then we might have some progressive politics again (beyond the weak and unprincipled of Democratic Republican-lite politics, that is.)
But most of all, we’ve got to treat the Republican hate machine appropriately: Drudge-acolytes like Breitbart, phonies like Beck and Limbaugh — all are pariahs that our news media must stop treating respectfully.
