An a$$ to kick?
On May 27, President Obama instituted a six-month moratorium on all drilling in water depths greater than 500 feet and stopped work on 33 Gulf deepwater exploration rigs, except under special circumstances. The president’s decision will force tens of thousands of Gulf Coast employees to lose their jobs.

EnergyTomorrow Blog posted this information today:

Several organizations have offered estimates of the drilling moratorium’s impact on consumers, the U.S. oil and natural industry, and the nation’s energy security:

  • Adam Sieminski of Deutsche Bank predicted that U.S. oil production could fall by 160,000 barrels of oil per day by next year. (Financial Times)
  • Bernstein Research said delays from the moratorium and rising costs stemming from new safety regulations are likely to raise the marginal cost of deepwater production by about 10 percent. (Financial Times)
  • Paul Cheng of Barclays Capital warned that the higher costs could eliminate small independent companies who compete for drilling projects against the majors. (Financial Times) He also predicted an 11 percent drop in deepwater oil production. (Houston Chronicle)
  • The Houston Chronicle reports that two large oil-services companies are relocating workers from the Gulf of Mexico to onshore North America drill sites and Brazil.
  • The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) predicts that relocation is just part of the pain to be suffered by energy workers. Burt Adams, NOIA’s chairman, said in a statement, “the [president's] order will be felt by the families of tens of thousands of offshore workers who will be unemployed.”

API’s chief economist John Felmy discussing the potential short effects of Obama’s moratorium:

  1. Obama is OPEC’s best lobbyist.

  2. And the oil price goes up and the Saudis are dancing while celebrating Obummer.

  3. From ignoring the blow-out, to blowing off the Netherlands, ignoring Jindal, and attending parties while the South faced disaster…this POTUS gives new meaning to the word “incompetent”.

However, this political kneejerk reaction against drilling that will worsen the tragedy and misery indicates that Obama hasn’t even started screwing up yet.

Jimmy Carter, step aside. There is a new idiot in town.

  4. Want to see an ugly situation look better? Go a little ways down the road with the Obama administration, then look in the rear-view mirror.

  5. We need a new category to measure “Jobs lost or Destroyed” by Obama.

    DITTOS!

Remember he’s using these events to his own ends.
Obama WANTS this country to be in serious finacial trouble. This way he can “transform it”.
Better hope we can set America back on course.

  7. Those oil wells are really deep for a shallow guy like Barry.

  8. Gallup: Obama at 44%

    48% disapproving.

But of course that’s the right-wing Gallup. The left-leaning, fair and balanced Rasmussen has Obama at 46% approval, but then, they also have Obama at 53% disapproval, with 43% strongly disapproving.

Damn, it’s gotta be time for another ABC poll to say he’s at 54% approval.

  9. President Pip-Squeak “I’m in charge” Kickin’ A$$

Members of a panel of experts brought in to advise the Obama administration on how to address offshore drilling safety after the Deepwater Horizon disaster now say Interior Secretary Ken Salazar falsely implied they supported a six-month drilling moratorium they actually oppose.

Salazar’s May 27 report to President Barack Obama said a panel of seven experts “peer reviewed” his recommendations, which included a six-month moratorium on all ongoing drilling in waters deeper than 500 feet. That prohibition took effect a few days later, but the angry panel members and some others who contributed to the Salazar report said they had reviewed only an earlier version of the secretary’s report that suggested a six-month moratorium only on new drilling, and then only in waters deeper than 1,000 feet.

“We broadly agree with the detailed recommendations in the report and compliment the Department of Interior for its efforts,” a joint letter from the panelists to various politicians says. “However, we do not agree with the six month blanket moratorium on floating drilling. A moratorium was added after the final review and was never agreed to by the contributors.”

  10. Obama WANTS this country to be in serious finacial trouble. This way he can “transform it”.

I am always torn between assigning malice or just presuming incompetence. Based on principle, I go with venal incompetence every time. Obama and his entourage really likes to enjoy the trappings of power–the respect, adulation, and good times that can come with being in power. And they don’t want to lose those fun times. Nor the big contributers (like BP) that make it all possible.

Furthermore, Democrats in general and this administration in particular, truly believe in one of the more disproven economic/political philosophies–call it socialism, social democracy, fascism, whatever. Whatever you call it, it is more obsolete than feudalism. Even the jihadis reject it for their religious totalitarianism. Obama just believes in the power government to make everything all right–despite thousands of years of evidence to the contrary.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt my thesis that Obama is a weak and narcissistic man who has never really been challenged his entire life. Now suddenly having the most stressful job in the world demonstrates the utter incompetence and fearfulness of the man.

So I don’t think Obama is evil or that he has some sort of master plan. I just think he is weak, incompetent, scared, and lazy. Upon reflection, I wonder if I wouldn’t take evil over that. At least evil would want to preserve the USA so it could continue to enjoy itself. And an evil master plan would at least presume SOME sort of master plan and show that creating a master plan was within the capacity of this confederacy of dunces.

Weak, stupid, scared, and incompetent scares me much more than evil genius.

  11. A six month moratorium

    1. Only on new drilling.

    2. Only in water deeper than 1,000 feet.

    Becomes

    NO MORE PRODUCTION ANYWHERE!

Never let a crisis go to waste.

  12. fire -> oil leak -> crisis -> let ‘er leak -> bigger crisis -> cap and trade

I have no problem ascribing motive, when it’s so obvious ideology trumps all else.

now there’s an excellent reason to throw a 20
million dollar “in celebration of a crisis party”..

I agree with most of the traits you ascribe to Obama but weak and lazy. He burns the midnight oil to achieve his goals. I for one WILL NOT underestimate the opponent. He is dangerous till hee can be rendered impotent.

  15. He is dangerous till hee can be rendered impotent.

I would argue that his very incompetence is more dangerous than evil motives. And the only midnight oil I have seen so far has been at White House parties or flying huge entourages to foreign functions.

We do have to get rid of him in 2012. I personally believe that describing him as a foolish, weak, and indecisive man in the wrong position at the wrong time is a better way to defeat him that describing him as Darth Vader. Ridicule Obama…it is so easy and fun, too.

  18. In the meantime, when is he going to close Gitmo? And anybody have a list of the other campaign promises made? Jim, how about an update?

  21. I can see November from my window…and it’s getting CLOSER! It can’t arrive fast enough…

  22. I disagree with you, Iconoclast. All you have to do is look to his ideology to understand his “master plan.” He himself has said that he intends to transform the country, and all his other words tell you how.

I would agree that he doesn’t consider this “malice.” But I do.

  23. I will add that his incompetence is something we should actually hope for – i.e., incompetence at achieving his aims.

  24. Obama may have stumbled on something here.
How about instituting a six-month moratorium on all federal paychecks.

  25. Never let a crisis go to waste.

  26. Best name pun ever? Barack Oilbooma

  27. The definition of Chutspah. We have an oil spill accident so Obama decides to stop further oil from being drilled leaving thousands out of work. Now he wants BP to pay for those who will be put out of work.

  28. Now Obama wants us to pay through the nose for oil as he works to pass his Cap and Trade bill under a new name. How do you spell relief N O V E M B E R.

  29. Hey Guys — Pray for Sharron Angle. She needs to beat back Dingy Harry and he is going to throw everything at her but the kitchen sink. I expect Saturday Night Live to do skits destroying Angle’s credibility the way they did Palin. It will only work if we let it happen.

  30. They weren’t going to let this crisis go to waste. It worked out perfectly for Obama and his thugs – they do nothing to protect the coastlines and destroy the economy generated in those areas and they put a stop to drilling and exploration and further destroy the economy. Gee, they must all be tickled pink over this crisis. Obama is destroying America – he HATES America. Can’t people understand that those who hate America, seek to destroy her at any opportunity.

  31. Obama isn’t an idiot – people need to quit thinking this. He would be incompetent and down right criminal if he actually cared about America, but he doesn’t. Start thinking along the lines that Obama is destroying America at every turn, and then you will see that everything he has done since in Office has been to the detriment of America……EVERYTHING.

  32. There are far fewer of the multi-million dollar rigs than the industry can currently use, so they are being towed to other areas. they will not be coming back, in six months or six years. The industry cannot let a hundred million dollar peice of equipment set idle, let alone 33 rigs. So the economic impact to the gulf region is really much worse than has been discussed. The 6000 direct jobs are permanently lost, together with million lost to support industries. Well that’s how it is when you shoot from the hip, no telling what you will hit.

  33. [A Louisiana official said oil firms have begun pulling rigs out of the Gulf of Mexico since U.S. President Barack Obama declared a six-month halt to deepwater drilling.....]

    And here is a little more proof;

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/06/10/experts-say-obama-misrepresented-views-justify-offshore-drilling-ban/

  36. Oil is used for many things besides gasoline. This will hurt all businesses including hospitals. A main ingredient in petrochemicals is oil which are used for synthetic (man-made) fibers which are wrinkle free and can be woven into curtains and carpets, dyes used to make the color of pen ink, and food additives that increase the shelf-life of canned food. Wax is a raw petroleum product. Petroleum is used to make candles, milk cartons and polish, soapless detergents including powders and liquids used to wash clothes and dishes, film, garbage bags, milk crates, synthetic shoes, rubber soles, car tires, compact discs, fertilizer, pesticides, cassette tapes, over-the-counter pain relievers, medical equipment, bandages and all plastic products. These are just a few of the things they want us to do without. Can’t make them with windmills.

  37. From aro5075′s link -

“They also said that because the floating rigs are scarce and in high demand worldwide, they will not simply sit in the Gulf idle for six months. The rigs will go to the North Sea and West Africa, possibly preventing the U.S. from being able to resume drilling for years.

They also said the best and most advanced rigs will be the first to go, leaving the U.S. with the older and potentially less safe rights operating in the nation’s coastal waters.”

Imagine, possibly no drilling for years because the rigs have had to move on to other destinations. The rigs can’t sit idle as they cost a lot of money and must generate income. Does anyone actually think Obama doesn’t know this? If the Middle East refuses to supply America with oil and she can’t get it in her own neck of the woods, how will America protect herself? Obama seems to be making sure America is neutered.

Experts Say White House ‘Misrepresented’ Views to Justify Drilling Moratorium

Salazar apologized to those experts Thursday
The experts who are involved in crafting the report gave us their recommendation and their input and I very much appreciate those recommendations,” he said. “It was not their decision on the moratorium. It was my decision and the president’s decision to move forward.”
