Obama: Gulf Oil Spill Echoes 9-11

Except without the leadership, the terror, the Islamists and the 3,000 dead Americans.
Besides that, they’re kinda similar.
Barack Obama told Politico’s Roger Simon today that the Gulf oil spill is like 9-11 and will change the nation’s psyche for years to come.
The Politico reported:
Sounding reflective as he heads into a bruising electoral season, President Barack Obama told POLITICO columnist Roger Simon that the Gulf disaster “echoes 9/11” because it will change the nation’s psyche for years to come.
Obama — facing mounting criticism of his handling of the BP gusher, even from longtime allies — vowed to make a “bold” push for a new energy law even as the calamity continues to unfold. And he said he will use the rest of his presidency to try to put the United States on a course toward a “new way of doing business when it comes to energy.”
“In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11,” the president said in an Oval Office interview on Friday, “I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come.”
Previewing his message for the midterm congressional elections in November, the president said: “[T]he Democrats in Congress have taken tougher votes, have worked harder under more stressful circumstances, than just about any Congress in our memory. And they’ve done a great job and deserve reelection.”
“So I’m going to be fighting on their behalf and doing everything I can and using my bully pulpit to communicate that fact to the American people,” he said. “I know there’s an anti-incumbent mood out there right now because … people are frustrated about the hit that the economy has taken. … But what I’m going to remind people of is we didn’t create this mess. And this Congress responded forcefully at a time when this economy really could have fallen off a cliff.”
Actually, Barack, most Americans are reminded of Katrina rather than 9-11 except that the response was better after Katrina.

Mrgoodwench — The WSJ has had a series of articles on this disaster, they track the cause down to the drill casing failure. And the fact that it was a single casing, instead of double wall casing, well you can figure out the rest. Well worth the read. Just search oil spill for the list on WSJ online.
It starts with the MMS should never have approved the single casing well design for this depth and this location. Then the MMS should never allowed drilling without a full environmental cleanup plan and equipment on the standby.
In other words massive big government regulation failure.
I doubt the pointing fingers president will point to his own agencies as the cause of the failures though.

Believe it or not, the two events DO have one thing in common. They both decided the tone, path, significance and ‘characters’ of the new Presidential Administration(s).

Now Dim Won, near two months after the leak, is just now coming to conclusion that the event is serious. Maybe Obama spent too much time playing golf and doing fund raisers to get briefed on the severity of the problem.

Yes, but what Obama is thinking about, is not how events affect the country, but how events affect his AGENDA.
He thinks he can USE this crisis to push Cap and Trade (they’re bringing it back up for another vote), to increase spending, to increase regulation, to increase the bureaucracy, ALL for the explicit purpose of increasing the long-term, as opposed to short term balance of power in the US.
In other words, Democrats believe that even if they lose the upcoming midterms, that the bigger and more intrusive they can make government, the more they can increase spending, the more they can increase the bureaucracy, the more dependent Americans will become on government, and that they are the natural leaders of a dependent people.
Sure, SOME of their increases will be rolled back. But not all.
And I believe he is RIGHT. The more they increase the size and scope of government, the harder it will be to undo. And the more Americans accept a bigger role for government, the more “progressive” Democrats will become the default choice.
Obama WANTS this to be his 9/11. I believe he is DELIBERATELY allowing the damage to increase so that he can USE the crisis more to his advantage.
Just as Democrats deliberately undermined their own country’s war efforts to get back in power, and just as Democrats deliberately undermined the economy by filibustering attempts to reform Fannie and Freddie to get back in power, and just as they have created, used and exacerbated the economic crisis as an excuse to ram through their ideological agenda.
Its not incompetence, its DELIBERATE.
