Obama’s War For Minerals–
US geologists have discovered nearly a trillion dollars worth of mineral deposits in Afghanistan.
The New York Times reported:

The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys.

The vast scale of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth was discovered by a small team of Pentagon officials and American geologists. The Afghan government and President Hamid Karzai were recently briefed, American officials said.

While it could take many years to develop a mining industry, the potential is so great that officials and executives in the industry believe it could attract heavy investment even before mines are profitable, providing the possibility of jobs that could distract from generations of war.

A trillion dollars worth of minerals could almost pay for Barack Obama’s annual budget deficit… Almost.

  1. Well that explains so many things.

  2. Somehow I feel certain that Obie and his goons doen’t even know what lithium is without looking into wikipedia.

  3. Before even one square micro-nano-milimeter of The ‘Stan becomes ‘shovel ready’, watch how many ‘environmental impact studies’ need to be done, along with requirements to plant two trees for every ounce of ground disurbed.

Plus, what about Afghanistan’s version of The Delta Smelt ? We absolutely MUST protect them at all costs, up to and including shutting off all the water to the area of concern.

Then, we’ll need to bring in The E.L.F. as consultants in order to assure proper structure placement of mining offices and other facilities in order to assure the most efficient use of explosives and assorted incendiary devices during each regularly scheduled ‘People’s Protest Week’.

And of course, there’s the need to assure all housing constructed is paid for by loans that couldn’t possibly be paid back by the homeowners in fifty lifetimes.

Gee….. I seem to be a tad cynical about things.

    I wonder why ?

  4. Again, it is all about Obama:
Lithium is used to treat manic depression — manic symptoms of hyperactivity, rushed speech, poor judgment, aggression, and anger.

  5. This is great news, now the POTUS has a source for some sorely needed Litium to correct his mental state.

This changes Afganistan to a capitalistic society very fast and threatens what Barry want’s to do to the world. powder is dry.

  6. Lithium is a breakfast cereal with lots of minerals, vitamins and fiber.
Usually ordered by people who talk with a lithp.

  7. Now we know why Obama and the Liberals and Halliburton keep this war going! Along with the Jews and the Bilderbergers. Michael Moore will show us the mineral deposits in his next movie!

  8. I thought the mineral deposits not only had been discovered, but the Chicoms have weaseled their way into being able to excavate.

“Lithium is used to treat manic depression — manic symptoms of hyperactivity, rushed speech, poor judgment, aggression, and anger.”

Bawney Fwank lovths lithium thprinkled on hith bweakfatht.
The fiberth keepth him vewy wegular. Otherwithe Bawney would be full of thyit.
But wait! Bawney ith full of thyit!
Tho I guethth that meanth lithium ain’t worth a thyit for Bawney’th bweakfatht, huh?

  10. This is, in the long term, very good news, because it could offer Afghanistan a revenue stream free of narcotics, thereby undermining the Taliban. Unlike Poppies, a mining industry would require physical security, a skilled workforce and foreign investment.

Perhaps this discovery will encourage the Afghan & US governments to take this war seriously.

  11. “Long term good news…” or the next Saudi Arabia style Jihadi funding nation?

  12. Time to form a lithium cartel…

  13. Afghanistan is dirt poor, and while the people are muslims, they don’t have a cultural and political mandate to advance Wahhabism as does the Saudi royal family.

  14. Great headline!

  15. Excellent, Daryl!

  16. Kenny #4, Don’t forget Andy Stern will want to organize the workers.

In a just world, we would have them sign land leases. We would set up the equipment, hire the locals and help our economy with the minerals in question. I’ll bet a cold Lemonade on a hot day that China or Russia get’s those leases then sells the product to us with money we borrow from them. Our leadership sucks.

  17. thankth Thubador!
I thrive vewy, vewy hard for ethellenthe. But thometimeth I don’t thuctheed.

  18. Sorry… but I wouldn’t invest a plug nickel into anything happening right in the heart of the islamic ummah.

As we’ve seen before in history, the muslim world fawns and bows and says all the right things while people from the West are pouring vast sums of money into the ummah to build the vast infrastructures needed to develop such resources.

And once it’s all up and running? The muslims find some excuse to kick the unbelievers out of ‘islamic lands’ and keep everything for themselves.

  19. Uh oh,
Correcthyion. I wrote thrive. Meant thtrive.

  20. Let’s get with the program!

Today is Flag Day, and the 235th anniversary of the US Army.

    Gallantly Forward!

    Pray for our gallant troops!

    Pray for Victory.

  21. DUDE!

This explains sooo much. Why is Karzi acting up? He just became a trillionaire!

    Wow.

Well good for them. This, if done right, will break the back of the Taliban. Unlike poppy, which requires no education to grow, if the people want the ore out of the ground they will have to learn how to get it out of the ground. School, engineering, technical expertise, experience in heavy equipment other than old Soviet tanks, this could really turn things around.

Assuming the tribal nature of the people can be kept in check. They could revert and act like some of the people in the diamond mine wars.

  22. archer52 “act like some of the people in the diamond mine wars.”

Yep, it would be pretty much the same. Money solves some of these things. Buys off the tribes, buys weapons for friendly warlords. Money will never change human nature.

  23. Lucky for the Afgans that Osama had training as a civil engineer. Now that obama has shown the world his weak side and Karzai is sucking up to the Taliban, this all makes sense.

  24. GREAT! Maybe now they’ll burn down those poppy fields.

  25. Dems will come with a demand that all mining profits be shared equitably among all Afghans. It will spook Karzai & his gov’t, who will shut US companies out & offer contracts to Chinese. Chicoms care about their own profits only, make no human right demands & care little about environment. Less demanding partner to do business with.

It happened with oil in Iraq, after some meddling by Schumer & McCasskill.

  26. Why are US tax $$ going to find weath for these guys? Are they going to pay us back? We will probably let the Chinese have mining rights.

  27. But lithium is needed for electric cars and other green needs. It’s not like icky oil or other evil stuff.

    The war is now moral!

    Bomb, Barry, Bomb!

  28. Muslims like to kill themselves, the lithium deposits mean nothing to them. At best it gives them more money to buy weapons.

  29. These mining projects will require a lot of blasting. Thankfully Afganistan has a large number of individuals to perform that blasting. Full employment for Jihadi suicide blasters.
