A former oil worker quit in disgust after she said the cleanup was all cosmetic.
WKRG News reported:

Former oil clean-up worker Candi Warren says she signed up to make a difference, but soon found out the work of cleaning the beaches was all cosmetic. That’s what she was told, she says.

Warren says she knew that when crews worked during the day, the tide and surf buried oil overnight. But they were forbidden to dig it up. She quit in disgust three weeks ago despite the $18 per hour pay.

She said she was told to only clean the surface of the sand, that this is all cosmetic. She was on a crew at Gulf State Park where tourists go. She says it has priority so as to make it look like the beaches are clean.

Warren says she believes money is being wasted on the crews and says “At some point the real clean-up will have to begin, but I’m afraid the money will be gone.”

She used a shovel and dug down six, eight, maybe twelve inches into the sand to show us the layers of oil close to the shoreline.

  1. Oilbama’s all for show too.

  2. Also, only a single-digit-percentage of the oil-covered animals that are cleaned off actually survive. All the time and money and effort invested in cleaning off those animals (however unfortunate and innocent victims they may be) could be put to more productive use.

  3. Just like Oil-bama’s presidency. All dog and pony show.

  4. Obama, The EPA, and his entire regime, are criminally negligent.

  5. And NOW, with the hurricane season here, obama gives permission for foreign skimmers in the gulf. This is ludicrous!!! His incompetence and his incredible lack of caring are no accident, believe me. Worst, most un-American president EVER!!!

  6. The Democrats won’t approve Republican visits to the Gulf.

Republicans could go anyways and pay for it themselves, but it wouldn’t be official and they would probably be denied access.

  7. Obama = insanity.

  8. Very good piece on this topic by Winston Groom (author of “Forrest Gump”) over at the Weekly Standard.

Be warned, though. You won’t know whether to laugh, cry, or tear your hair out.

  9. Hope that gal is watching her back. Moving. Changing her name. Leaving no return address.

  10. Report is that the A Whale, the world’s largest skimmer, is scheduled to arrive at the Gulf today.

  11. What I want to know is who told the workers this is for show? BP? The feds? Other?

  12. WKRG is my local CBS affiliate. I saw this story last week.

I’m not knocking the lady’s honesty, but she’s not the first response worker to quit. And there are layers upon layers of organic material that look like oil buried just beneath the surface. Some of it is peat from the bay and marshes, some of it is decayed sargassum seaweed and some of it is decayed saltwater string algae. If it’s more than say, a few inches deep, it’s probably not oil.

Unskilled labor used in these types of operations have a horrible turnover rate. When I was running debris crews after hurricanes Ivan, Dennis and Katrina, I’d have a different bunch of faces show up almost every morning. It’s hot and dirty and they have to wear long pants and safety boots on the beach. Not one of my crews had a tent to sit under.

Also, all of Baldwin County’s beaches are being cleaned by beach cleaning machines and have been for weeks. They haven’t been using crews like that except at a few locations that the machines can’t get to. The labor crews unload and wash down the machines, and bag up the oily debris for disposal. My bet is that the lady quit because she was tired of having to clean the beach cleaning machines.

  13. I always thought this was the case, that it was all for show, so this is just confirmation from the front lines. Also totally agree on the waste of resources cleaning animals that probably won’t survive, and are being released back into a polluted environment.

This is just more BP PR bs. They know there’s no point in any cleanup effort until the gusher is plugged, but they’ve got to look like they’re doing something. Also, these jobs put money into the pockets of cleanup workers, which is a sop to the local pols.

Any word on the health of cleanup workers? I heard they’d get fired if they wore respirators.

    All For Show

    wonderful.. /sarc/

but then again, when it comes to the Obama’s, what the hell isn’t..

  15. Yesterday Shep said he was sorry he had to report on the oil spill-he said he knows we are as tired of hearing about it as he is-and it made me think that maybe the WH put out the word to keep reporting to a minimum. If so, I feel that is criminal.

Ick! I can’t stand Sheppie Smith. Blech!

  17. Welcome to Barry’s Dog and Pony Show!

Admittance only a few trillion dollars!

  18. The media is to blame, as they are the ones letting this administration get away with it.

The next time you go to buy a newspaper…think twice, do I need another shot of cover-ups and lies? Gateway Pundit and others provide you the news you need.

  19. Buy a newspaper? What means buy a newspaper?

  20. There seems to be nothing of real substance in the lefty world of President Jive.

  21. IMPEACH OBAMA IN 2011!

  22. Wow. Not one post that blames BP for this mess. It was their cost cutting and poor management of the drilling of the well that caused the blowout, but it’s the president’s fault? I thought this was a serious blog, but obviously I was mistaken.

We are commenting about the waste of money all for “show” concerning the oil spill clean up. We are not talking about whose fault the spill is. Get with the program.

President Obama: I’m in charge of oil spill cleanup, but
admits mistakes in reaction to BP slick: May 27, 2010

["I take responsibility. It is my job to make sure this thing
    is shut down,"
Obama said. "The federal government is fully engaged and I am fully engaged."

Obama spent much of his first full news conference in nearly a year fending off criticism his team has been slow to grasp the severity of
    the economic and environmental catastrophe.

He also fought criticism that oil giant BP has been calling the shots since
its well in the Gulf of Mexico exploded on April 20, killing 11 people. He insisted the feds are running the show.]

I appreciate the education and experience you share here. However, it’s wrong of you to make assumptions and accusations about why Ms Warren quit her job with the cleanup crews. That she believed she was being paid to pretend to clean up the Gulf while actually letting it die is reason enough for her to quit. That you’ve attempted to assign to her other motives for quitting actually leaves you appearing suspect of ulterior motives for commenting. Think about that.

  26. I have a contact in Pensacola who confirms that the workers simply cover the oil with plastic sheeting and shovel fresh sand on top. Kind of like sweeping dirt under the rug. Just wait until the first hurricane stirs up that evil brew. God help us all.

  27. Obama is supposed to be President of ALL Americans! When will impeachment start? Obama is up to his ears in Blago mess and meddling in other unscrupulous matters. He has been protected by the Chicago mob. It includes judges, politicians and mobsters. Wake up Americans!

  28. OK, do I hate BHO’s…well, everything? Yes. However I am skeptical that someone quit an $18/hour job during these tough economic times. Could be yet another WH plant to stick it to big oil and keep our offshore drilling shut down.
