Against Governor Jindal’s wishes the federal government blocked oil-sucking barges today because they needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board and were having trouble contacting the owners.
ABC News reported:
Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state’s oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor’s wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore.
“It’s the most frustrating thing,” the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. “Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges.”
Sixteen barges sat stationary today, although they were sucking up thousands of gallons of BP’s oil as recently as Tuesday. Workers in hazmat suits and gas masks pumped the oil out of the Louisiana waters and into steel tanks. It was a homegrown idea that seemed to be effective at collecting the thick gunk.
“These barges work. You’ve seen them work. You’ve seen them suck oil out of the water,” said Jindal.
So why stop now?
“The Coast Guard came and shut them down,” Jindal said. “You got men on the barges in the oil, and they have been told by the Coast Guard, ‘Cease and desist. Stop sucking up that oil.’”
A Coast Guard representative told ABC News today that it shares the same goal as the governor.
“We are all in this together. The enemy is the oil,” said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Dan Lauer.
But the Coast Guard ordered the stoppage because of reasons that Jindal found frustrating. The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges.
Unbelievable.

Here is another example of a fine Republican CEO, Mr. Jindal, like Brewer, like Christie, like Rudy – GW – Reagan prior, who is doing the JOB – not abandoning their sworn oath for a mega book deal or cheap leftist lawsuits.
And Democrats are mindlessly pushing disaster to stop an effective CEO. Jindal is experiencing just what happened to the Bush Administration when they were blocked by Blanco to take action in LA.

Don’t they sell fire extinguishers at Wallmart?
Problems like these are endemic to any entity where people don’t have to sing for their supper. In the government its even worse because the more aggravation they can cause people, the more they can perpetuate their own existence. Look at the building regulatory departments in most cities in America. They jerk people around to high heaven because it perpetuates their jobs. They find one problem, you fix it, and then they find another one. When you fix the second one, guess what? They have no obligation to be efficient because they have no competition. They routinely over reach and violate the law, but its not cost-effective to take them to court. Even if you win, they make your life twice as miserable next time around.
Most governmental agencies over interpret their mandate and misconstrue things in their favor because it keeps their people busy which in turn justifies their budgets and their existence. Especially now that the economy is slow, instead of working with people to get commerce moving and keep businesses going and keep people employed, the regulators at all levels are now working against the people because the slow economy leaves them with less to do. If they have less to do, they fear the loss of their jobs. They can easily rectify that situation by making work for themselves through busting everyone’s chops. This occurs at the city, county, state and federal levels of government – its everywhere and we all know it.
Thus, we can see how less government is better. We’re not for no government, but we can all clearly see how government bureaucracies are prone to waste money, perpetuate their own existence and take advantage of their role as custodians of the public’s best interests. What always happens is that the bureaucracies take care of their own best interests instead. And as we saw last week, employees on the public payroll make $1.45 for every $1 people in the private sector make.

In a nutshell.
Remember the media narrative when Obama was elected was that there would be civil unrest and street demonstrations against him?
Thought it was very peculiar. But it was all over the media, so they got their talking points to soften up the public to have expectations of street violence. The Tea Party got rolling, and the media immediately focused on that for “violence” only there wasn’t any.
But apparently the narrative NEEDS civil violence to advance to the next step. This BP spill in itself is not agitating people, it’s the White House blocking of all efforts to stop it and contain the spread that is pushing people to heights of frustration – so the people ESPECIALLY Governor Jindal (and Brewer) are being manipulated, boxed in a corner, either forced to watch their beautiful land and waters ruined for generations or to act against the constraints, which will be the excuse the White House needs as their fig leaf cover to crack down on the STATE governments – move against governors.

EPA decision on ethanol blend put off until fall
By Mary Clare Jalonick and Matthew Daly – Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency says it will wait until this fall to decide whether U.S. car engines can handle higher concentrations of ethanol in gasoline.
The agency had been expected to decide by this month whether to increase the maximum blend from 10 to 15 percent.
The EPA said Thursday that initial tests “look good” and should be completed by the end of September. A decision will come after the Energy Department completes the testing of the higher blend on vehicles built after 2007.

Dunkirk Evacuation Delayed For Safety
June 1, 1940
DOVER (Routers) The evacuation of British and French troops from the besieged French city of Dunkirk was halted today, over concerns that many of the private vessels that had been deployed for the task were unsafe for troop transport.
Government officials ordered all soldiers to hold their places on the harbour waterfront and beaches, and those in the water were told to hold up boarding as well, until the various fishing and pleasure vessels could be inspected by the Home Guard, to ensure that there were sufficient life vests, fire extinguishers and other safety devices on each one. Each boat will also have to be tested for leaks before it will be deemed safe for the passage across the Channel.
“We can’t risk our soldiers’ lives on these cheap boats,” explained one official. “The Germans are firing on our ships, and we’ve already lost six destroyers to submarines and aerial bombardments, three of them just today. If all those non-military boats don’t have the proper safety gear, they won’t stand a chance,” he shouted over the din of incoming mortar fire from German troops only two miles away.

Yeah, retard, 2 million gallons a day are pouring into the gulf because of your free market capitalist cult, and you think a couple barges will save the day.
No wonder intelligent and educated people laugh at uneducated white trash conservatives like you!

The dispute centres on the preferential tariff that Belarus has been paying since 2007 for Russian oil. It has been selling on Russian crude or refined oil at world prices.
Russia says it is prepared to sell oil to Belarus duty-free for domestic consumption but wants to charge the tariff for oil that Belarus exports.
In 2007 a similar dispute with Belarus over oil tariffs disrupted Russian oil exports via the Druzhba pipeline to Poland and Germany

Obama Underwrites Offshore Drilling
Too bad it’s not in U.S. waters.
You read that headline correctly. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration is financing oil exploration off Brazil.
The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil’s Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan.

Soros Hedge Fund Bought Petrobras Stake Worth $811 Million
By Jeb Blount and Miles Weiss
Aug. 15 (Bloomberg) — Billionaire investor George Soros bought an $811 million stake in Petroleo Brasileiro SA in the second quarter, making the Brazilian state-controlled oil company his investment fund’s largest holding.
As of June 30, the stake in Petrobras, as the Rio de Janeiro-based oil producer is known, made up 22 percent of the $3.68 billion of stocks and American depositary receipts held by Soros Fund Management LLC, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Petrobras has since slumped 28 percent.

Hate to break up the OBAMA-SLAPFEST but a close look at the story from the ABC Website would tell you that the the White House told the Coast Guard they could only advise on safety but could not STOP any operations due to safety concerns.
FROM ABC SITE -
Officials from Plaquemines Parish, desperate to get the barges back out, called the White House who immediately spoke to the Coast Guard.
According to Plaquemines Parish officials, the White House had spoke to the Coast Guard, informing them that from this point forward the Coast Guard can not interfere with cleanup operations, only make suggestions on safety concerns. Within a few hours, the barges were back in operation.

BP Oil Spill: Against Gov. Jindal’s Wishes,
Crude-Sucking Barges Stopped by Coast Guard
[Louisiana Governor Couldn't Overrule Coast Guard
The governor said he didn't have the authority to overrule the Coast Guard's decision, though he said he tried to reach the White House to raise his concerns.
"They promised us they were going to get it done as quickly as possible," he said. But "every time you talk to someone different at the Coast Guard, you get a different answer."
After Jindal strenuously made his case, the barges finally got the go-ahead Thursday to return to the Gulf and get back to work, after more than 24 hours
of sitting idle.

Along Gulf Coast, Governors Ask, ‘Who’s In Charge?’
Sixty days into the crisis, it still can be tough to figure out who is in charge in Louisiana, and the problem appears to be the same in other Gulf Coast states.
In Alabama Thursday, Gov. Bob Riley said that
he’s had problems with the Coast Guard, too.
Riley, R-Ala., asked the Coast Guard to find ocean boom
tall enough to handle strong waves and protect his shoreline.]

I, MR. PRESIDENT, CAN FIX IT – YES I CAN!!
The President Does a Jones Act
WSJ, June 19, 2010
[President Obama has repeatedly said his Administration is doing everything in its power to expedite the oil clean-up and mitigate the damage. But in the two weeks immediately after the spill, 13 foreign governments reached out and offered their assistance. The U.S. response? Thanks, but no thanks.
Or at least that's how Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston, described the U.S. answer. The State Department phrased it slightly differently: "While there is no need right now that the U.S. cannot meet, the U.S. Coast Guard is assessing these offers of assistance to see if there will be something which we will need in the near future." One month later, many of these offers are still outstanding.
The Belgian dredging group DEME says it has offered the U.S. specialized vessels and technology that can help clean up the spill in three to four months compared to the estimated nine months that the U.S. will need. There are only a handful of these vessels in the world, and most of them belong to Dutch and Belgian companies. So why aren't we calling on them?
Blame it on the protectionist Merchant Marine Act of 1920, also called the Jones Act, that requires ships working in U.S. waters to be built, operated and owned by Americans. Building specialized clean-up vessels in the U.S. is too expensive because of high union labor costs, and unions don't want ships built with foreign labor to be used in U.S. waters. To circumvent the Jones Act, clean-up crews have had to outfit American ships with skimming technology airlifted from the Netherlands. This has resulted in serious delays and greater harm to the Gulf.
Presidents can suspend the Jones Act in emergencies, as George W. Bush
did after Hurricane Katrina. But the Obama Administration continues to maintain that this isn't necessary and that there are "no pending requests" for waivers. But Florida Republican Senator George LeMieux disagrees and says his constituents want all the foreign help possible.
We sympathize with the President's lament on Monday that "I can't dive down there and plug the hole. I can't suck it up with a straw." But there's no excuse for turning away ships that can clean up the oil merely because that might offend Mr. Obama's union friends.]
all you’re “fixing” Mr. President is the
downfall of America’s “small people”..

The jackassness of this (if true) reminds me of a WWII naval battle between a Japanese fleet and a US cruiser. The cruiser should have been doomed against the Japanese fleet, but in the middle of the battle, the Japanese fleet turned around and went home. It seems that their naval regulations at the time required that if they were down to 1/3 their ammunition, then it was time to return to port to restock.
The LA governor should have been able to make a few phone calls to get these Coast Guard idiots relieved of their command so that the skimmers could continue to do their job.
I’ve had run-ins with the C.G. up here in NY before when in my boat on the Great South Bay. C.G. patrol boats, with apparently nothing to do, routinely pull over small craft for inspection of the fire extingusher and the life vests. Each time I am inspected, I am told that my fire extingisher should be bigger. Each time, I ask them if the one I have is legal, and when they say “yes,” I tell them “I guess I pass your inspection then.”
