Popular Arizona Governor Jan Brewer told Obama last week to,
“Do your job… Step up and secure our borders.”
Finally, after all of the lame jokes, he responded.
Today Barack Obama announced that he will send 1,200 National Guard troops to the Mexican border.
The AP reported:
President Barack Obama will send 1,200 National Guard troops to boost security along the U.S.-Mexico border, officials said Tuesday, pre-empting Republican plans to try to force votes on such a deployment.
Obama will also request $500 million for border protection and law enforcement activities, according to lawmakers and administration officials. The moves come as chances for action on comprehensive immigration reform, Obama’s long-stated goal, look increasingly small in this election year. But Obama is under pressure to do something with the issue front and center after Arizona’s passage of a tough crackdown law.
The National Guard troops will work on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support, analysis and training, and support efforts to block drug trafficking. They will temporarily supplement border patrol agents until Customs and Border Protection can recruit and train additional officers and agents to serve on the border, an administration official said.
This is weird. Obama never makes sane decisions. So why is he sending in the guard now?

Ask this, who will control the hiring and training of all these new agents, and who will they owe their allegiance to?

It’s all for show.

What’s their ROE? 2500 guardsmen for the whole US Mexico border,or 25 hundred to high traffic areas in Arizona? Will the areas being patrolled be published? What result when the first National Guardsmen is killed in action? How many will actually be patrolling the border, and with what equipment? Enquiring minds want to know.

Im guessing he is sending them to the border to protect the illegals from the border patrol as they scramble across the border and desert. My guess is they will be escorted to busses supplied by the SEIU where they will be given papers and a union membership form and $2500 for their trouble and hardship that evil conservatives are making them face when they break the law and invade our country.
Never let a good crisis go to waste. Then he will most likely hire them at union wage rates to clean up the oil slick after a few more months of golf, vacation, concerts blaming Bush, pissing off a few more allies, bowing to 4-5 more dictators and telling us we arent sacrificing enough and getting to the halfway point of his apology tour.
What a pathetic excuse for a human being much less President.

Obama complained to the Republicans today that he is getting a lot of heat from the left, which is why he invited them into the Oval Office hoping to get some bi-partisan support on immigration reform. Thank God, the Republicans did not give in in fact; several Senators said that Obama was a bit testy at the meeting.
This small measure will only alienate him more with the left and produce little or no help from the Republicans. Obama’s trying to have it both ways and now he finds himself in a dilemma.

The administration is getting over-run by events and doing nothing about any of them. North Korea is escalating, Europe is crashing, the oil slick is spreading, polls are dropping, illegal aliens are flooding in.
This is the easiest thing to do. It’s just for show, they can make a show of it. Remember, Bush tried this in 2006 or so. The plan was to put in a few thousand until a few thousand Border Patrol could be hired and trained.
Sound familiar?
Also, then, as now, it was stated that more were needed than the plan called for.
The Caffeine Talking commented:
Q – “So why is he sending in the guard now?”
A- Nothing more than a cynical publicity stunt. Even if the numbers are sufficient, they will be recalled once the public focus is elsewhere.
A true solution is easily at hand – BUILD THE DARN FENCE (it works in SoCal, it will work all the way to Texas) – only then will there be enough political good-will for there to be a humane solution to the problems from years of inadequate enforcement…

Yeah the last time they sent Guardsmen to the boarder worked so well. They did useless jobs, and even had to retreat when they were attacked by armed men from across the boarder. You can’t fight off invaders when you have empty weapons, and orders not to fire if you had ammo.

Well, I spent the afternoon calling rt-wing politicians in Tx. State & Fed with my legal idea. Many staffies seemed to like it.Here goes:
Legal Premise for scaffolding a new act or law:
1) elected officials are duty -bound to abide the Constitution and prioritize the health-safety of their constituencies as a priority
2) Aliens entering the USA are already ‘criminals” since they broke in and are more than likely using fraudulent docs to get jobs
3)Elected officials in the interest of public safety must assume that an unvetted alien is a danger in that we do not know their criminal history from home country
4) Federal codes already lay out the “aidding and abetting”language…is not hiring someone “aidding and abetting”?
Therefore, I feel that a link could be made between the employer of illegal hiring practices and being held liable in civil court should any damages bodily or in property form occur to a citizen in the USA. If it can be proven via investigation that an illegal alien was in the gainful employment of some business or entity then they would be open to litigation. We have many American citizens who have been run over and killed or loss a loved one,etc that are left holding the bag with no legal recourse.Suits against sanctuary cities have gone nowhere. We need to get trial attorneys a new line of work…helping in the fight against open borders.

I second your thoughts, manatee/#42..
the West Point speech was a complete dud,a fiasco. Why,the assembled applause was thinner than the his own thin skin! He truly is a man who serves a master other than America.
With his numbers sinking like a stone and coat tails getting shorter by the day, he now strikes a pose as CiC, okaying, at most, 1200 guard personnel to the border who’ll be carrying water bottles instead of loaded guns..what a joke.. we have a 2000 mile border here in AZ. 1200 guards {if, indeed, he deploys that many],patrolling 24/7 on say, 4 shifts, would put 300 out there.. one guard per 6.5 miles or more..that’s a real game changer, huh?
The good news is the GOP getting him to DO SOMETHING, albeit lame political posing, on the issue. I think it was Dr K who suggested that hiring 20,000 workers to build the wall from stimulus bucks would be smart..[Gov. Brewer could actually consider repealing SB 1070 if the wall were built} but our ideologically blind pOTus could never be ‘defined by borders’.. as usual, it’s all about him and using immigration as a cynical means to scoop up votes . not about his sworn oath to the Constitution & the rule of law.. I still can’t believe we ever elected this loser.
Sandy commented:
This is weird. Obama never makes sane decisions. So why is he sending in the guard now? Because the lady Gov. beat the snot out of him. 85% of Americans agree with Brewer on Immigration and that includes 75% of Dems. However and with Obama there is always a however–he wants his Immigration Bill and he needs Repubs to join him so as to mitigate the anger Americans will feel toward Dems if they pass this alone. He cannot stand that Republicans are going to clean his clock — so he has an offer they can’t possibly refuse — lose big time.

1200 troops is nothing. having been in the Guard for 20 years, i can tell you that a good portion of those bodies will be spending their time in logistical activities supporting the rest of the troops, and will therefore be of no direct help in addressing the problem.
now, if the First Failure was to mobilize a Guard division, or about 12,000 troops, you might actually see some effects, but pus nuts will never do that.

Just one slight beef with your headline.
It looks like,
“…President Obama’s announcement of border funding and National Guard troops is one big, phony charade.”
“He apparently didn’t even bother to let the governor of besieged Arizona, Gov. Jan Brewer, know about it.”
“The Obama administration plans to announce Tuesday that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security, an Arizona congresswoman said.”
“Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also said in a statement released Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security.”
“Part of Giffords’ district borders Mexico.”
“Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s spokesman said the governor hadn’t been told of the move prior to her office being contacted by The Associated Press and had no immediate comment.”

Obama’s sending the National Guard? I thought that the State Governors were the commanders of their respective Guard units. What am I missing?
Good question. I was wondering same. I’m no expert but looking up references seems to indicate Governors can declare state of emergency and deploy the guard-usually following floods, hurricanes, etc.
Per wikipedia: State militias are not entirely independent, however, because they may be federalized. According to Article I, Section 8; Clause 15, the United States Congress is given the power to pass laws for “calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.” Congress may appropriate funds to support state militias (clause 12)

Brewer said she asked several times for Federal assistance, but it’s pathetic she has to find out thru the media, not by a direct White House communication.
It might also violate the posse comitatus act.
Designed to keep states from being terrorized by the US military under a White House depotism. National guard under governors and the Coast Guard are exempt … but these are not the troops being discussed, so Obama is supposed to ASK, like Bush ASKED Governor Blanco. It may not be a straight violation, but it is in spirit – not showing basic respect to a state governor.
Of course, if the National Guard is going to be placed as fast as the oil booms are being placed, we may as well get out the lawn chairs and park.
Just a few miles from the AZ/MExico border are highway crews pouring MILES of what look like 30 foot tall concrete sound barrier walls along the interstate I-17 as it passes thru Phoenix. It’d be a simple thing for the POTUS to order those work crews, cement and molds down to the border and start pouring there. The first trucks could be there in three hours. A wall would start appearing in one week flat.
Priorities, priorities.

1200 Natl Guard troops is NOT nearly enough!
It should be enough to allow 2000 per each shift.
All of us should scream that they must be armed.
The number of troops should be increased until the flow of illegal immigrants clearly SHOWS to be reduced to ONLY a very small trickle uncaught.
The troops should remain on our southern border until the fence is FULLY completed and secured!
MKS commented:
The issue may be federal power versus state power.
The Arizona law is well-composed and likely to survive court challenges. If it successfully works on its own, the U.S. government will look very bad, and other states may look to themselves, not only for border control, but for a number of services that are now under federal control.
Once the states learn they can take care of themselves in such areas, the “progressive” agenda then must be implemented state by state, or else fall apart entirely for another generation.
On the other hand, if the federal government gets involved, then it (1) mutes many claims that it is not doing its job, (2) continues to be perceived as needed for such services, and (3) continues to be in a position to make border control ineffective.
Arch commented:
Right now, the problem is that illegal aliens are committing 20% of the crimes in Arizona. The people need to stop hiring them and the police need to arrest and deport them, both of which are in SB 1070 and in the federal law.
1,200 National Guardsmen are not enough. Two thirds of these troops will be in a support role – beans, bullets and water. Boots on the ground will be limited to about 400 for 8 hours per day; the distance from Yuma to Douglas is 400 miles. McCain’s estimate of 6,000 is closer to a minimum effective force.
We are seeing the adverse effect of putting a corrupt, unqualified, anti-American president in the White House.
