Well, this was special.
The Washington Post published this special greeting by Richard Dawkins to Catholics this year during Holy Week:

Your Church is a “rotten edifice” and Pope Benedict XVI is a “leering old villain in a frock.”

Disgusting.
Here is the WaPo’s special Easter greeting, Via Pundit and Pundette:

No. As the College of Cardinals must have recognized when they elected him, he is perfectly – ideally – qualified to lead the Roman Catholic Church. A leering old villain in a frock, who spent decades conspiring behind closed doors for the position he now holds; a man who believes he is infallible and acts the part; a man whose preaching of scientific falsehood is responsible for the deaths of countless AIDS victims in Africa; a man whose first instinct when his priests are caught with their pants down is to cover up the scandal and damn the young victims to silence: in short, exactly the right man for the job. He should not resign, moreover, because he is perfectly positioned to accelerate the downfall of the evil, corrupt organization whose character he fits like a glove, and of which he is the absolute and historically appropriate monarch.

No, Pope Ratzinger should not resign. He should remain in charge of the whole rotten edifice – the whole profiteering, woman-fearing, guilt-gorging, truth-hating, child-raping institution – while it tumbles, amid a stench of incense and a rain of tourist-kitsch sacred hearts and preposterously crowned virgins, about his ears.

  1. No offense, but the Catholic Church is primarily concerned with protecting itself as an institution. Saving men’s souls second. Stopping molesting priests? Not so much.

Of course, Islam is much, much worse.

  2. Wow! No bias there.

  3. Is this the same newspaper that actively promotes baby killing? Where do they get their moral authority?

  4. If all Catholics don’t cancel their WaPo then he may be correct. I mean the Jews still support Obama, why shouldn’t Catholics continue their support of one of his cheerleaders the WaPo? Wake up America.

  5. Every Easter, these secular humanist Christian haters come up with some story to embarrass Christians. Every year. And they wonder why no one reads their tripe anymore.

  6. Ho Hum. The Gates of Hell and WaPo shall not prevail……you know the rest.

  7. Well, giving Catholic Father (term used lightly) Phegler a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD by the cardinal in Chicago certainly tells me something is awfully rotten on the inside of the that once great religion. Localized to the Chicago area? I think not.

  8. I do not look to the Washington Post, Sally Quinn, Jon Meacham, or Lisa Miller for news about religion. What a bunch of unqualified hacks.

The only reason to publish Richard Dawkins is to offend Christians.

  9. Wow!

You can almost feel him drooling.

  10. I think WaPo has the Pope confused with Obama.

  11. @ Jack, you are an utter and complete moron and an anti Catholic bigot, engaging in vile rhetoric vis a vis the august, Pope Benedict XVI.

@ Billy Bob, you are utterly incorrect, His Eminence Cardinal George, from Chicago, head of the USCCB, has publicly chastised Father Pfleger in a variety of ways, even suspending him for a time.

If you knew anything, whatsoever, about Papal history you would no that even during before Marx arose, Popes were blasting socialism, and under both the Venerable Pope John Paul the Great, with Cardinal Ratzinger as a right hand man, they helped Pres Reagan and Thatcher bring down the Evil Empire in Europe!

  12. And the Washington Post is equally qualified to lead the liberal knowitalls into their triumph of atheistic crony socialism, with taxing powers over the red-state peasantry who still work for a living.

    Editorial tar and feathers, gentlemen.

  13. These tiresome English tosspots still haven’t gotten over the Pope’s refusal to grant Henry VIII’s divorce.

    Ho-hum.

  14. …and they shouted the louder, “Crucify Him!”

  15. From wikipedia:
“Dawkins is an atheist, secular humanist, sceptic, scientific rationalist and supporter of the Brights movement. He has been referred to in the media as “Darwin’s Rottweiler”,

Not exactly an authority on Catholicism, and of course lacking of any moral compass or humility. STFU

  16. The day the Washington Post gleefully slams the leaders of Islam for its refusal to strongly condemn and excommunicate those who blow themselves and others up in terrorist acts around the world, men and families who kill their wives/daughters in “honor killings”, those who seek the destruction of Israel and the United States, etc….

Then, and only then, the WaPo can talk about the Catholic Church. Until then, they have this amount of credibility: Zero. Nada. Zilch.

  17. A+++, newton:

    Behead all who slander Catholicism.

The writer is correct about the “woman-fearing” part. My wife, for example. She got thrown out of the gestapo for cruelty.

  18. “I think WaPo has the Pope confused with Obama.”

I agree with this. It sounds like the left in this country are lashing out at everyone because the man they put in office is such a disgrace and embarrassment to the country. Turn your ugly anger where it belongs Washington Post, on that Indonesian usurper Obama!

  19. They do have a point though.

The pope and bishops and cardinals in Austria and Germany have covered priests and monks who have abused children. That is a fact. They’re covering them.

But, what WaPo “forgets” is that non-christian schools have the same scandals. I only say: Oberwaldschule in Germany. 100 years of sexual assaults on the children there. The founder was a known pedo. The media is silent.

    Double standards.

Sexual abuse of children can not be tolerated, no matter who does it. Anyone who does it, whether he’s a leftist (like German Green party EU parliament member Cohn-Bendit) or a priest should be locked away forever and also be castrated.

  20. Yawn. When they criticise Islam wake me up.

  21. Jack,

Your comment that the Catholic Church cares first and foremost about protecting itself is ignorant bigotry and harmful to the conservative movement. Next time, don’t try to sofetn things up with a “No offesnse intended” statement whent that was obvioulsy the whole point of your comment. (I wonder if you also think Mitt Romney’s not a good conservative because he’s Morman). If conservatives are going to defeat secular progressivism, it will take a union of conservative Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons, and conservative Jews to do so. So let’s respect each other’s religious beliefs and dogmas while embracing the values we all have in common: a belief in religious liberty, respect for unborn life, belief in marriage as the cornerstone of society, etc.

  22. Be proud to be a Catholic
By Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman – (NOT a Catholic)
    2009-01-05
Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important
institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic
    Church?

Do you know – the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at
the cost to your Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other
hand tothe American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars.

Your graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%, all at a cost
to you. To the rest of the Americans it’s free.

The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. With an enrollment
    of 700,000 students.

The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which
account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people – not just
Catholics – in the United States today.

But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the
    Catholic Church in this country.

    – They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which
is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage.

Let me give you some figures that you as Catholics should know and remember.
    For example,

    – 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse
with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in
a study by the United Methodist Church,

    – 41.8 % of clergywomen reported unwanted sexual behavior;
    – 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed.

Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of pedophilia.
10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia. This
    is not a Catholic Problem.
A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood
and find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the
choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR
    the church has been receiving.

The Catholic Church is bleeding from selfinflicted wounds. The agony that
Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily the Fault of the Church.
You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably
been totally weeded out by now.

Walk with your shoulders high and you head higher. Be a proud member of the
most important non-governmental agency in the United States.

Then remember what Jeremiah said: ‘Stand by the roads, and look and ask for
the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for
    your souls’.

Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what
your Church does for all other religions.
Be proud that you’re a Catholic.

  23. Not to be rude… but “moral authority”? Where does the Catholic Church get THEIR moral authority? Supposedly from an “infallible Pope”!! Has anyone thought to stop and THINK about what claiming infallibility (Oh, since the 60′s “only” on spiritual matters), or “only a priest (Catholic of course)” can absolve ones sins REALLY MEANS?? It’s spiritual rape is what it is… god goes through THEM ONLY? Jeeez… their stupid claims & rules are coming back to haunt them.

I think lot’s of people are confusing “God” and “Church”.

    Billy

  24. Oh, by the way… Even the Catholic Church’s best claim is that they are no more likely to be a pedaphile than the general population… AND THOSE STUDIES ARE ANCIENT… before any of this stuff.

Soooo… is it any wonder the Catholic Church is having scorn heaped on it, given: they claim the holy spirit guides them SPECIAL… “the bride of Christ”… more and better than other denominations or normal citizens!! Should I go on about all the ways the Catholic Church claims OFFICIALLY to be closer to god than others?

This idea Catholics are better than protetstants is (unlikely first of all) yet to be seen… obviously.

    Also a Catholic!

  25. Before one can get a job at waPo, one has to recite passages from Ordos Sinistra Vivendi – Satan’s handbook. Ask Nancy Pelosi about verses covering human sacrifice, she knows them like the back of her hand. Why do you think she supports abortion? Now you know why! ;)

  26. I long for the day when the truth about Richard Dawkins is revealed – that he is a leering old man who …… and who hypocritically lies about other people.

What is so very interesting is the lie that Pope Benedict plotted to become Pope. I guess that is why Josef Ratzinger had that bet with the Irish journalist… the only man who prior to the death of Pope John Paul 11 the Great blurted out “I bet you will be the next Pope”…. Josef Ratzinger had a bet with the journalist against himself, for he did not believe that it would be the case…. and the journalist was sent a bottle of Bushmill Whiskey….

As for AIDS in Africa, I think that this has to be the most stupid, the most irrational and most absurd argument that a scummy person like Dawkins could level at the head of the Catholic Church. Let’s face facts here, most Africans are not Catholics and they do not come under the jurisdiction of the Vatican. Therefore the Pope has nothing to do with the spread of AIDS in Africa.

On the other hand, the sexual practices within these African nations are a concern. They have multiple partners – male and female. Do you think that might have something to do with the spread of VD? Well, I certainly think that this might be the case. Then there is the fact that monkeys get HIV… could it be that their contact with monkeys and apes might be a problem? hmmm…

Then there is the accusation about science. Was that something to do with Intelligent Design? The Catholic Church has not endorsed Creationism, but is open to Intelligent Design. The Catholic Church as far as I am aware has not made any form of announcement infallible or otherwise on the subject. The reason? Because as Catholics we recognize that there are various senses of Scripture, and we do not always accept the most literal interpretation of what is written in the Scripture. The opening chapters of Genesis is a good example because Catholics have not been taught to take those chapters as meaning a literal 7 days. Rather the 7 days represent epochs or eras of time. The way it is written is to reflect the passage of time as the world evolved, until man was formed.

Even when I was at school, in a Catholic high school my science lessons covered evolution. The religion side was also covered. Personally, I think that both should be taught to the children and let them test out the theories and make up their own minds.

  27. ++

The Pope and the New York Times

Cardinal Ratzinger did more than anyone to hold abusers accountable.

[Plus, his bishops had already stripped Murphy of his priestly faculties, the equivalent of taking a doctor's medical license. Does all this really suggest people callously looking the other way?

A few years later, when the CDF assumed authority over all abuse cases, Cardinal Ratzinger implemented changes that allowed for direct administrative action instead of trials that often took years. Roughly 60% of priests accused of sexual abuse were handled this way. The man who is now pope reopened cases that had been closed; did more than anyone to process cases and hold abusers accountable; and became the first pope to meet with victims. Isn't the more reasonable interpretation of all these events that Cardinal Ratzinger's experience with cases like Murphy's helped lead him to promote reforms that gave the church more effective tools for handling priestly abuse?

That's not to say that the press should be shy, even about Pope Benedict XVI's decisions as archbishop and cardinal. The Murphy case raises hard questions: why it took the archbishops of Milwaukee nearly two decades to suspend Murphy from his ministry; why innocent people whose lives had been shattered by men they are supposed to view as icons of Christ found so little justice; how bishops should deal with an accused clergyman when criminal investigations are inconclusive; how to balance the demands of justice with the Catholic imperative that sins can be forgiven. Oh, yes, maybe some context, and a bit of journalistic skepticism about the narrative of a plaintiffs attorney making millions off these cases.

That's still a story worth pursuing.]
