Cardinal George of Chicago will honor Barack Obama’s racist friend and spiritual advisor Father Pfleger in a special ceremony this week.
Like his buddy Jeremiah Wright, Father Pfleger is known for his intolerant outbursts at the pulpit.
Pfleger said, “America is the greatest sin against God.”
This kook will be honored with a lifetime achievement award.
ENews reported:
Along with the St. Katharine Drexel Racial Justice Awards, the Office for Racial Justice will honor Bishop Joseph Perry and Father Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Parish, with Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their lives of service in pursuit of dismantling racism, injustice and inequalities on behalf of African Americans and all people of color.
The awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m. April 7, 2010 at Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory School during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Service. His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. will preside over the ceremony.
Father Pfleger was temporarily suspended from his church in 2008 after verbally attacking Hillary Clinton from the altar. He refused to apologize for his racist remarks.

Where do Catholics go when they hear this nonsense from the Church? How can you support your church when you hear this nonsense? Do you just try to support your local parish and ignore the larger Church?
What has happened to Church leadership in this country? (And it’s not just the Catholics).

As a practicing Catholic, I don’t understand this at all. In the words of The Annointed One….”It’s troublesome”…….

Without the flame and fancy, we have a priest here, in Canton, MA, that is a boring, flat-voiced version of this priest. And you wonder where catholics go? We stay home.

Manatee. I would not support the Diocese if I lived in Chicago. I would approach my priest, (and I have in past) and I would tell him why I was not giving to the church.

I’m catholic and often try to defend the Church but sometimes I just can’t do it. This guy is a total whack job. What an embarrasement.
Azrael Jones commented:
Here’s what you do.
Catholic Ministries Appeal (used to be Bishop’s Annual Appeal) send in a check for $0.01. And write a short note – 50 words or less – saying why HE does not have your financial backing.
Send your support to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. They actually do charity work.
Hacks like Pflegger and George are liberal secularists. They aren’t Christians.

This seems to be mainstream Catholicism.
I am not Catholic, but I do not like seeing this over and over again in the Catholic church.
Are Catholic leadership not listening to their flock, or are old-school Catholics now the fringe?

Seemingly, it’s one disgrace after another. Didn’t Cardinal George sign the declaration against Notre Dame inviting 0bama to the graduation ceremony? This makes no sense.

This is an April Fool joke, right?
Drusilla commented:
When Catholics encounter something such as this, we try to remember that everything human can be found within the Church, the highest and the lowest. This is obviously an example of something very, very low. We bring priests and issues of this sort to the attention of our clergy, especially our Bishops. And we pray that they will listen and address issues such as this one. He scandalizes the Church and causes people to say, I don’t want to be part of a Chuch that would include such hatefulness. We pray for priests such as Fr. Pfleger – that he repent, that he might do as little harm as possible. Finally, we remember that the Church is more than one hate-filled man. It is the Body of Christ and here on earth, even Christ’s Body contains the “tares” which are allowed to grow beside the “wheat.”
gus commented:
Just a guess, but I think Chicago is probably the 3rd largest or 4th largest diocese in America. The man HONORING PFLEGER is a CARDINAL. This pisses me off.

Don’t lose your way over this. It’s Jesus Christ we worship not any churchs clergy. For Catholics it’s the mass and the elevation and consumption of the eucharist that is the center of our worship not the homily or anything else a priest might do.
If you still have a problem with the clergy remember Christs admonishment ‘for those without sin to cast the first stone’. They need our prayer perhaps more than others because their burden may be greater.

Abandoning the Catholic Church because of a bad priest and a Cardinal with a Marxist/racist bent is as unreasonable as abandoning the Republican Party because of John McCain. There are good ones and bad ones wherever you go. I feel sorry for anyone who lets a very small percentage of bad apples ruin the entire crop.
The reason Catholics stick with the Catholic Church is because the Church teaching on faith and morals is solid.

If there was really a separation of church and state, churches would have to pay taxes. I see no mass political movement to force this issue, so I guess all the talk is just that, so much talk.

Every few centuries or so the Catholic Church utterly loses sight of its true mission on Earth.
The last time it took a rebel monk named Luther
to bring about a redress of grievances. Luther, far from wishing to destroy the church, rather, sought its reform. Vatican resistance to such reform ultimately led to a little spat known as the Thirty Year War. A most unpleasant event.

Our church was assigned aging hippie priest a few years ago. I can’t tell you how many of his sermons began with his holding up a newspaper from 1968. He lives there.
The last straw came when he was fairly new to our church and pronounced that we were so fortunate to “have a prophet in our midst.” (And he wasn’t referring to anyone else present.) He’s anti-military and anti-war, despite having a large number of military retirees.
Our next stop was the church up the road, which also happens to be the designated-Hispanic church for our diocese. A friend who recently retired from state govt. belonged to this chuch for a short time until he called them out for knowingly committing fraud for the gain of illegals. He pointed out the illegality of what they were doing and they looked at him blankly and said, “So?”
Our diocese’s Catholic newspaper is as far left as you can get — everything deals with illegals and “green” lifestyle.
As the mother of youngish children, I homeschool my kids from Baltimore Catechism books from the early 60s. They’ve learned more in one book than they have in all the years they attended church-sanctioned classes, which taught them nothing but diversity, diversity, diversity.
I’ve had quite enough.

When Pope John Paul II appointed Francis George as Archbishop of Chicago in 1997, he was viewed by the liberal establishment then (priests and media) as being somewhat orthodox and not following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin. The usual gasps of the coming inquisition were splattered all over the media.
At that point, I had high hopes that His new Eminence might really shine as an outstanding example of what a shepherd of the flock and a successor of the Apostles is supposed to be. Either that or he would become just another mediocre liberal playing diplomatic footsie with the entrenched Chicago establishment. In other words, taking the coward’s way out.
But I never imagined that he would be party to this outrage by honoring Fr. Pfleger, a man who has worked overtime as his own press secretary, a master of narcissistic self-promotion, an abortion enabler, and a maintainer of racial disharmony in this city and country through his Leftist political ties.
Whatever respect I tried to maintain for His Eminence is lost in this outrage against decency and charity.

Cardinal George is scheduled April 7 as “presider” at an event designated as a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King that includes honors for Rev. Michael Pfleger.
In 2008, Catholic Citizens of Illinois called on the Cardinal to remove Pfleger for, among other things, his public support for pro-abortion politicians (i.e. Obama) and inviting the pro-abortion candidates to speak from the pulpit at St. Sabina’s (i.e. Al Sharpton.)

Perhaps I should thank God that I’m an atheist.

unfatmatt (at #32) and czekmark (at #21),
You speak truth, and I must agree with you.
BUT, having said that, I’m still reeling anyway. I mean, what the @#$%^&! It’s one thing to have a Fr. Pfleger in the Church; there will always be some like this. What’s disheartening is that a bishop–nay, more than a bishop, a cardinal–nay, more than a cardinal, a cardinal who I’d thought was orthodox–would be honoring this man.
And while I’m bitching, are there any other Catholics who are as upset as I am over the Catholic League– the Catholic League! of all people!–snarkily attacking Randall Terry, who bravely and sincerely speaks for so many of us when he asks, why is Nancy Pelosi allowed to continue calling herself a Catholic when she constantly promotes the most heinous sin of abortion?

UCC member Sen. Barack Obama discusses faith and politics
[Later -- during his interview with United Church News -- Obama continued his thoughts about religion and politics; specifically, the role of religious principles in reaching a balance between national security and social justice concerns.
"I believe that democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal values," Obama said. "Social justice and national security are both universal values, values that may originate for some in their religious beliefs, but are shared by us all."]
”I am certain nothing has done so much to destroy the juridical safeguards of individual freedom as the striving after the mirage

[From a political stance that is leftist, you must legislate to create a just society, and various programs need to exist in order to collect monies needed to even the playing field between rich, middle class, poor and those people who are routinely marginalized by society. Equal rights can be defined as equal access to things that make it possible for people in any societal sector to be successful. Therefore, leftist philosophy would support things like anti-discrimination laws and equal opportunity programs, and would favor taxation, especially of those who make a lot of money, to pay for programs that help provide equality for all.
The far left would argue that there are certain basic needs that must be offered to all. These include things like truly equal education and safety in all schools and programs that would help all children have the financial opportunity to attend college. Far left groups, often termed socialist even if they differ from true definitions of socialism, further argue that a just society cannot be had unless everyone has access to food, safe shelter and medical care. The way to achieve this is through taxation and government implementation of programs that will guarantee these things for all people.
The right political stance equally endorses a just society, but may criticize those who make poor choices and feel that while equal opportunity should exist, a government should not legislate for this. In fact it is argued that social justice is diminished when governments create programs to deal with it, especially when these programs call for greater taxation. Instead, those who have more money should be encouraged to be philanthropic, not by paying higher taxes, which is arguably unjust.
From a religious perspective, you’ll find people all over the political spectrum who argue for social justice. Many Christian groups believe that you bring about justice through Christlike actions of mercy, especially those that help people who have been marginalized by society. Islamic perspective on social justice is similar; one of the Five Pillars of Islam is that all must give to the poor. However, certain sects of Islam promote views of women and men as different; women are not equal to and are subservient to men.]

I agree with Kathi #46. We as christians need to remember that we will only need to answer for what ‘we’ve’ done. All priests, nuns, and archbishops will need to account for there own sins.
