Key Democrat and impeached judge Rep. Alcee Hastings said this during a House Rules Meeting today in defense of the Democrats’ health care approach:
“All this talk about rules. We make them up as we go along.”
It should be noted that in 1981, Hastings was charged with accepting a $150,000 bribe in exchange for a lenient sentence. Hastings was impeached for bribery and perjury becoming only the sixth federal judge in the history of the United States to be removed from office by the Senate.
He’s still making the rules as he goes along.

Only hubris like Hastings’ would permit a member of the US Congress to publicly disrepect the Constitution in such a manner.
They all need to be thrown out. November 2010 can’t come soon enough.

The “esteemed” CongressCritter Alcee Hastings happens to be my representative (FL-23).
Believe me, you can use much more clear and concise language when describing his actions.
He shouldn’t be in Congress…… He should be in prison.
I work for the gent running against him for the seat…… Bernard Sansaricq. (I provide audio systems for his events. I don’t charge him or the campaign – and it’s a pleasure to be involved. The legal term is “in kind”.)
Mr. S. is a good guy – born in Haiti, former president of The Senate there….. his family was assassinated – he got out with his life and the clothes on his back.

The double-standard reflects the insouciance of the electorate that vote liberal — Mark Foley was excoriated for his emails to young interns, while Gerry Studd actually had sex with them — the former is drummed out of office (rightfully so), while the other is re-elected to several more terms.

In 1981, Hastings was charged with accepting a $150,000 bribe in exchange for a lenient sentence and a return of seized assets for 21 counts of racketeering by Frank and Thomas Romano, and of perjury in his testimony about the case. He was acquitted by a jury after his alleged co-conspirator, William Borders, refused to testify in court (resulting in a jail sentence for Borders).
In 1988, the Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives took up the case, and Hastings was impeached for bribery and perjury by a vote of 413-3. He was then convicted in 1989 by the United States Senate, becoming the sixth federal judge in the history of the United States to be removed from office by the Senate. The vote on the first article was 69 for and 26 opposed, providing five votes more than the two-thirds of those present that were needed to convict. The first article accused the judge of conspiracy. Conviction on any single article was enough to remove the judge from office. The Senate vote cut across party lines, with U.S. Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont voting to convict his fellow party member, and U.S. Senator Arlen Specter voting to acquit.[1]
The Senate had the option to forbid Hastings from ever seeking federal office again, but did not do so. Alleged co-conspirator, attorney William Borders went to jail again for refusing to testify in the impeachment proceedings, but was later given a full pardon by President Bill Clinton on his last day in office.[2]

#26 I disagree with you! Thousands went to Washington today and many more held protest rallys in their towns. Many of the republicans in Congress ARE fighting back (Inhofe, DeMint, Pence, Ryan and more). We really DO have to give credit where it is due!!

What country are you talking about? Not the United States. Here, there’s a new movement called the Tea Party that came out of nowhere and is now a genuine force for change.
And in case you missed it, every single Republican in the Senate and all but one Republican in the House stood together.
I don’t know what you expect people to do other than make their voices heard and then vote. Frankly, you’re coming across as either unhinged or a phony trying to discredit this site by pretending you’re crazy.
Stop with the hysteria. This is the beginning, not the end. When everyone finds out how much they have to pay and how limited their choices will become, they’ll elect enough Republicans to repeal it. This is the last nail in the coffin for big government, not the first step in the inevitable transformation of our country. It’s the first step in restoring our freedoms, not taking them away.
We still have the power. If we wield it responsibly, we’ll take back the country. So stop your screeching. It’s embarrassing.
