The White House lashed out at Chief Justice Roberts today afters the top justice told a crowd yesterday that Barack Obama’s unprecedented attack on the court at the State of the Union Address was “very troubling.”
HuffPo reported:

The White House fired back at Justice John Roberts Tuesday night, after the Supreme Court Chief told a crowd that he found it “very troubling” that President Barack Obama would criticize the court during his State of the Union address.

In a statement sent to reporters, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the only troubling thing was the 5-4 ruling by the court, which said that corporations could spend unlimited amounts of money advocating on behalf of candidates in elections. Roberts leads the court.

“What is troubling is that this decision opened the floodgates for corporations and special interests to pour money into elections – drowning out the voices of average Americans,” Gibbs said. “The President has long been committed to reducing the undue influence of special interests and their lobbyists over government. That is why he spoke out to condemn the decision and is working with Congress on a legislative response.”

The push back against the Supreme Court header from the White House seems almost unprecedented in its directness, though White House officials claim previous administrations expressed equally public criticisms of the court. Undoubtedly, it’s bound to spur another round of debates over what constitutes proper decorum between the two branches.

Once again… Barack Obama attacked the Supreme Court during his State of the Union Address this year:

Justice Alito disagreed.

For the record… When Obama attacked the Supreme Court at his hyper-partisan State of the Union address he relied on an old Jim Crow law to make his point.
Via Rhymes With Right:

Yeah, that is right. Barack Obama stood before the people of the United States and praised legislation introduced by a fellow Democrat who preceded him in the US Senate, one of the most vile enemies of African-Americans to ever serve in the United States Senate, a despicable man who owed his election to public office to his participation in an armed assault upon a body of black soldiers during Reconstruction and the lynching of several of these soldiers, and a dangerous demagogue who was censured for his physical assault of another Senator on the floor of the US Senate and barred from the White House over the incident.

Figures.
Law Professor Glenn Reynolds asks: IS IT SMART FOR THE WHITE HOUSE to be in a pissing match with the Chief Justice?

  1. So, the 450 Million for O’s campaign from the Unions doesn’t count? Aren’t they a special interest group? After all, only 8% of American workers are in Unions.

  2. Gibbs is an asshat and so is Obama.

  3. Smart ain’t it! These clowns are like the poor magician you saw as a kid, with things falling out of his sleeves and a rabbit peeking out of his hat.

  4. Fantasy debate: Roberts vs Gibbs

How heavily handicapped would Roberts have to be before anything approaching parity were to be achieved. More Obama administration hubris. A pip=squeak attempting to argue with an intellectual giant. Honestly, this administration is so completely out classed on ALL fronts. Delusional. No reality testing ever.

  6. Did he say “special interests”?

Did he also say “undue influence”?

I did however fully comprehend his statement about:”drowning out the voices of average Americans”.

That the Hope and Change the Obama administration believes in.

  7. Smart thing to do? No. Will he do it any way? Yes.

  8. “PS – there is simply no proof Obama was a Law Professor. Chicago Univeristy was started by Rockefeller .. and seems to be a conduit for his Puppets .. however, the CU website stated that Obama was not a Law Professor there .. the page was apparently scrubbed later.”

  9. Honestly, I don’t know how I feel about the wisdom of allowing our elections to be shanghaied by corporation spending.

On the other hand, Obummer’s election was totally financed by unidentified, foreign, illegal contributors. Pot calling the kettle black? Obummer has no business complaining of corporate advertising when he was elected with the funds of unidentified contributors. And he refused to follow the campaign disclosure laws.

At the very least, the Supreme Court should be the final arbitrator of justice, not some drug-smoking, dysfunctional, affirmative action dude whose friends bought the election!!

Obummer is much dumber than he’s given credit for — why doesn’t he shut up when he’s behind??
    .

  10. Memo to bob gibbs,
Corporations are made up of average American citizens…just who do you think creates a corporation and just who do you think works at one….gah, what a schmuck…

  11. Did he say “Drowning out the voice of the average American’?????Isn’t that exactly what the government is doing by ignoring the Tea Party? How clueless are they? The American people are screaming and Gibbs and Obama are the ones who are trying to drown out our voices.

  12. It’s my state of the Union and I’ll use it how I want to.

It is sad that Gibbs lowers the level of the argument from the actual content of what Roberts said. Roberts was making the point that out of respect for the office of the POTUS some Justices still attend the SOTU, and the respect was not returned.

If, as a member of the SCOTUS, you are just being invited to a mugging, reruns of Seinfeld might be an appropriate alternative.

Gibbs is the perfect person to respond to the actual charge, since reporters are used to getting nothing of substance from him, and people look at it as just another stupid thing Gibbs says. For the OA, it is much better than having a real press secretary. He makes Scott McClellan look insightful and candid.

  13. It’s hilarious that probably 3/4 of the country never knew Roberts made this statement. Now everyone who pays any attention whatsoever will hear about it. Is tis another war like he waged against Fox? Be careful, Obama, this dude has more power than Fox.

  14. The current regime in Washington is un-American, and the leftists in D.C. have proven beyond any reasonable doubt that they are unable to govern and should not be allowed in power ever again.

Hope for a change in 2010 election — but we may have reached the point of no return for the USA by the next Congress.

I’m reminded of a scene from the 1953 version of “War of the Worlds” (I think) where a train races through a railroad crossing at 100 mph. It is unmanned and on fire. Where did that train end up? Same place as the US economy will.

  15. Gibbs will be out of a job soon. Roberts will not.

  16. Poor little Goobert Fibbs, everytime he opens his mouth he makes a fool of himself.
His whole rant about special interests describes how Obamao bought the Whitehouse. Go away lil’ Goobert.

  17. Yes it is right to pick a fight with the Supremes because it distracts people from the big attempt to take over health care from the private sector. It is all calculated.

  18. Wackos from all over the USA are attacking Chief Justice Roberts today. It is as if the resurrection from the grave of the hysteria corps of imbeciles have arrived.

  19. “The President has long been committed to reducing the undue influence of special interests and their lobbyists over government.” Does that include ACORN?

  20. Again I reiterate, never pick a fight with someone who has a lifetime apointment. Your job is finite and has an expiration date. When someone is making a fool of themselves get out of the way and let them. pass the popcorn and the ammo. powder is dry.

  21. …doofus…the little idiot still think his fascist boss is the LAW..his awakening’s not far away. November’s going to be historic.

  22. “The President has long been committed to reducing the undue influence of special interests and their lobbyists over government. That is why he spoke out to condemn the decision and is working with Congress on a legislative response.”

That in itself is a load of crap. Obama is all for the influence the special interests and their lobbyists have over the government, at least the ones he can use to his advantage and who support him, so in reality, he was just trying to make himself look good to the American people.

  23. Frankly, I hope he p*sses off all the Supreme Court Justices, so they haul his half foreign backside into Court to prove his eligibility to be POTUS.

  24. “What is troubling is that this decision opened the floodgates for corporations and special interests to pour money into elections – drowning out the voices of average Americans,”

Oh, they care what we think, now?

  25. O’Dumbo is upset because he is trying to kill corporations and he knows that payback will be a bitch as these corporations pour money out to efeat him in 2012 ;-)

  26. When the Obamao/Pelosi/Reid Axis of Evil failed to ram through Obamacare last year that was the end of the beginning for them.

What we have seen out of the increasingly angry, frustrated and desperate Obamao/Pelosi/Reid Axis of Evil over the last month is the beginning of the end for not only them but the Corruptocrat party and their MSM fluffers.

The whole situation has that Berlin, April 1945 feel to it. Those who can are running, cutting deals to save their hide or changing their behaviour in hopes that they won’t go down with the regime. The true believers are down in the bunker leaving their soldiers (the unions/race warrior/moonbat nutroot Orcs and Trolls) outside to be slaughtered.

I am going to make a prediction here. By this time next year Reid will be a private citizen, Pelosi will just be another congresscritter who has to use her own jet to haul her around-both will be facing criminal charges. Obamao will be facing impeachment, his merry band of Maoist “czars” and staff will be facing criminal charges and some will be possibly facing treason charges. The rest of the Corruptcrat “nobility” such as Frank, Rangel, Dodd, Kerry, etc. will be facing the same problems.

The MSM will of course try to keep spinning the propaganda but it won’t work, just like it didn’t work for Joseph Goebbels. They had best be prepared to go down with their messiah that gives them tingly legs because they have chained themselves to him with chains of their own making.

The Corruptocrat party as a whole will be so damaged as a “brand name” that it will take a generation if not longer for them to repair their reputation and even then I doubt any Corruptocrat will be trusted hold a national office again. Of course there will still be places where they still cling to power such as Chicago, Detroit, Boston, etc. but those places will become increasingly insignificant on the national stage as they become abandoned husks of their former selves. See Detroit and Cleveland for the future of Chicago, New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Minneapolis.

both logic & the American way..

  28. “What is troubling is that this decision opened the floodgates for corporations and special interests to pour money into elections – drowning out the voices of average Americans,”

The law never stopped corporations and special interests from pumping money into elections. This is a ridiculous argument. When they audit Obama’s campaign funds from the last election, let me know. Now it’s officially legal.

  29. Shouldn’t this be a good thing for Obama? His biggest contributors were corporations when he did not go through public financing. What a hypocrite.

  30. There won’t be any “fight” between Beltway Bob and the Chief Justice. Roberts would never lower himself THAT far to be one-half of what amounts to a street fight. He has FAR too much class and intelligence for that. Besides, it would be a KO very early in the first round!

And before O Bummer gets too mouthy about campaign contributions he should take a quick peek at the millions illegally funneled to his campaign from one George Soros.

Some day – hopefully – we’ll know the truth.

  33. Trying to think like a liberal and why they would do this…maybe its the thought and the actual threat of the SC Court overturning their health care crap sandwich! If they annoy Roberts enough to quit, theres the fifth vote for health care even if it is Unconstitutional!!

Democrats Prepare “Slaughter Solution” to Ram Unpopular Health Care Takeover Through Congress Without a Vote

The twisted scheme by which Democratic leaders plan to bend the rules to ram President Obama’s massive health care legislation through Congress now has a name: the Slaughter Solution.

The Slaughter Solution is a plan by Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY), the Democratic chair of the powerful House Rules Committee and a key ally of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), to get the health care legislation through the House without an actual vote on the Senate-passed health care bill. You see, Democratic leaders currently lack the votes needed to pass the Senate health care bill through the House. Under Slaughter’s scheme, Democratic leaders will overcome this problem by simply “deeming” the Senate bill passed in the House – without an actual vote by members of the House.

  35. I still don’t understand what Obama thought he would achieve by calling out the Supremes the way he did. The Supremes can and will have the last word on a lot of the junk Obama is up to in time.

Too many people on our side still want to fight this battle with “gentlemanly rules” while the other side fights with every dirty trick imaginable. This battle is WAY to important to be a gentleman, time to take the gloves off, it will be too late once they close the doors on the cattle cars, way too late.

  36. Can’t fix stupid!

  37. Glad he mentioned a 5-4 decision. How about the 2007 5-4 decision making CO2 a pollutant with Obama pal Entergy a plaintiff whose stock went to an all time high after the vote? Fine Reverse that if you don’t like 5-4 decisions. This response by Soros Obama is astounding. The hatred motivating Soros Obama against America is unlike anything I’ve seen. Soros can give unlimited amounts to 527 groups. The problem with billionaires is they hate the middle class.

  38. Is there not three branches to our government? Is one branch somehow situated upon an ivory tower forever excused from criticism mandated by the constitution? Criticisms between the congress and the executive you say is ok but not between the supreme court and congress or the supreme court and the executive branch? Gibbs has every right to condemn the supreme court’s decision.

Sure you can dissent. Just not at a forum in which by most decent people’s standards you cannot stand up and say “YOU LIE”. He does and the Justice still will have a JOB after 2012. The NOTUS will be gone and in the ash heap of history, as a complete failure. He is a failure because of his ideaology. Socialism is a failure and so is Barry.

U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts agrees with you.

Roberts said anyone is free to criticize the court and that some have an obligation to do so because of their positions.

“So I have no problems with that,” he said. “On the other hand, there is the issue of the setting, the circumstances and the decorum. The image of having the members of one branch of government standing up, literally surrounding the Supreme Court, cheering and hollering while the court – according the requirements of protocol – has to sit there expressionless, I think is very troubling.”

Too bad neither you nor Obamao realize that there’s a time and a place for everything and the prez’s SOTU address is not the time and place to criticize the SCOTUS decisions.

Just as thick-headed as you two is Robert Glibs.

In response to Roberts’ remarks Tuesday, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs focused on the court’s decision and not the chief justice’s point about the time and place for criticism of the court.

    Do you get it now?

    http://www.aolnews.com/politics/article/justice-john-roberts-calls-scene-at-state-of-the-union-very-troubling/19391206?icid=main|htmlws-main-n|dl1|link1|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aolnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Farticle%2Fjustice-john-roberts-calls-scene-at-state-of-the-union-very-troubling%2F19391206

  42. I hope to see Justice Roberts presiding over Obamao’s impeachment proceedings.

  43. Is one branch of government above the other? Not by design but certainly by degree. Can we honestly state that any of our Supreme Court justices, vetted by the Senate and the President, are scumbags like far too many members of the Congress and the White House? The answer is yes. Regardless of their political bent, none of the justices are tickling staff members, forgetting they have an extra two million dollars they didn’t pay taxes on, or 90,000 in cold cash in a freezer. They aren’t lying on a daily basis, nor attempting to steal money from the treasury.

So, yes. As much as I don’t like lawyers, I respect the SP judges. They are truly far better than the run of the mill politician.

  44. Sorry, I meant no. Not yes. SP’s are better men and women by and large. Honestly, would you compare Roberts with Pelosi or Thomas with Reid?

  45. Archer52, you’re partly correct. But not long ago we saw the sorry spectacle of Sotomayer quite obviously lying in trying to explain away certain past comments that showed her to be unfit for any court, let alone SCOTUS. In one instance she claims that her statement–I think it was the “wise Latina” one–was made in the course of agreeing with Justice O’Connor, yet the transcript of her comments makes absolutely clear that she was explicitly disagreeing with O’Connor.

It’s scandalous that she got away with it–because anyone who would object to her appointment must be racist, naturellement.

  46. The longer the executive, legislative, and judiciary fight each other, the more liberties we will have preserved.

  47. The President has long been committed to reducing the undue influence of special interests and their lobbyists over government.

And I’m the Emperor of China.

  48. JO remember its not corps anymore its corpses…..and i cant remember where i live anymore i think its somewhere in the 57th state ???????and ohhhh god help me for the 1st time in my life im not proud of my president..does this mean i have to go live in pockeystan…..
