The US Lost Another 20,000 Jobs in January But the Unemployment Rate Dropped to 9.7%.

The unemployment rate is now at 9.7% and it doesn’t look like things will improve much any time soon.
Millions of unemployed Americans will face years without jobs.
The New York Times reported:
Even as the American economy shows tentative signs of a rebound, the human toll of the recession continues to mount, with millions of Americans remaining out of work, out of savings and nearing the end of their unemployment benefits.
Economists fear that the nascent recovery will leave more people behind than in past recessions, failing to create jobs in sufficient numbers to absorb the record-setting ranks of the long-term unemployed.
Call them the new poor: people long accustomed to the comforts of middle-class life who are now relying on public assistance for the first time in their lives — potentially for years to come.
Yet the social safety net is already showing severe strains. Roughly 2.7 million jobless people will lose their unemployment check before the end of April unless Congress approves the Obama administration’s proposal to extend the payments, according to the Labor Department.

The seasonal “Winter Jobs” are about to end and the Summer break for college and high school kids is coming right up. Unfortunately, there will be few – if any – jobs available for them. Many, I’m sure, will simply have to give up on college because there’s no way to “work your way through”.
And NONE of the above mentioned workers qualify for unemployment. They won’t even be factored in to the statistics!

I am a Catholic (and so is Jim Hoft). I don’t know about Jim, but every time I hear the words “social justice” I think of socialism. I quit the Missouri Catholic Conference over it.
As for the charts, it reinforces my claim that we’d be better off doing nothing than going in debt over the stimulus scam.

Yep, that’s me. Fifty-five year old engineer who lost everything but the kids when the wife took off. Now for the first time in my life I’ve been laid off. Guess what? There are no jobs for old guys anymore. No jobs for colllege grads. No jobs for strong young guys who haven’t screwed up their backs yet. There are no jobs. The labor force is bleeding to death.
This cannot continue without some serious consequences.

The cuts are still continuing. I just found out on Thursday that the company that I work for is doing layoffs on Monday. Right now, I am scared about losing my job (as well as for my sister who works with me). I’m considered to be a part-time employee so I won’t have unemployment benefits. My sister has been with the company for 5 years and it would be devastating for her family because she’s the sole breadwinner. It’s really stinks because we are in the health care industry and it’s supposed to be one of the “safe” industries, but the health care bills are already killing it without passing.

I think it’s time to put a freeze on all immigration (legal and illegal). There is too many people for too few jobs. Riots are going to breakout when the unemployment checks run out and jobs are no where to be found. Just like the immigrant ghettos of France.
You have thousands of high school/college graduates who have to join the job force every year, what are they going to do? crime is going to up.
Even if we go to war with IRAN (as a last ditch effort to improve the economy) it won’t help much. Our manufacturing base is non-existence.

Dick Cheney has already said it, and I concur: Obama is The One-Termer. This label should stick to him like a leech.

The federal employment rolls have jumped and they are union employees who are paid 30-40% higher than private sector…and lets be honest the vast majority proably wouldnt cut it in the private sector or would be paid muc less. They are also given 75% more health benefits and their pensions are pathetically ridiculous and far outdo the amount they usually constribute. Of course they produce nothing but red tape and we cant export that to China and bring down the trade deficit. The federal budget needs to be cut by 20% period. Not a reduction in the amount of increase but a CUT of 20% This means eliminating useless or ridicolous programs and studies of cow farts, titsi fly sexual habits, why men go to hokkers, or the other thousands of garabe being done with our tax dollars. Impliment a flat tax and 50% of the IRS could be eliminated and the wastes at the lower ends of the income charts can finally actually pay their fair share. Lets sue the federal govt for discrimating against people on the basis of income. Why is it legal to make one person pay 20% tax and some others 25, or 30, 39% or more because they are more successful? Somebody in the GOP needs to start to challenge these iidiots on these illegal policies. Same with taxing one legal product (Smokes, Candy, beer wine etc) more than any other legal product. How can they legally tax ciggarettes 300-500% simply because they dont like the product. Cars kill more people than smokes, food helps kill people, guns etc etc etc. I feel liberals hurt Americans..I say we tax all liberals triple what conservatives are taxed. Why not its as logical as their jack a$$ arguments ? Its time to beat these morons over the head with logic and facts till they cant stand it any more and are beaten into submission.

I think most of the tax money goes to entitlements. Lots of people, not just government employees, get money but do not contribute to the economy. Now, the people who did stuff that contributed to the economy are being forced onto the dole. I just want a job, I don’t care whose “fault” it is, I’m not a blammer. If someone asked me I’d say that this has been coming for a long time.
My mom is all pissed off because I can’t afford college for my kids, who are very bright. In my day it was the college grads who drove innovation that created markets and jobs. Now I’m afraid todays economy is going to stain our future.

Yeah, Bigkahuma, I get sick and tired of hearing “tax the rich”. If we had a flat tax it would not only eliminate three/fourths of the IRS but also eliminate filing for taxes. Just take 10%, 15& or 20% from everyone’s earnings no matter what they are and forget about filing. Not only would that eliminate the deadbeats who don’t pay their taxes but would be fair. My concept of social justice is WHAT I DO as in putting folding money (can’t deduct for income taxes) in the poor box; sending checks to St. Vincent de Paul Soc., etc.; giving blood; and doing what I can. It’s the corporal works of mercy.

This administration’s “fix” for the economy is going as planned. Every action they’ve taken has advanced their economic agenda. They are acting to grow the government, cripple the private sector, and make as many Americans as possible dependent on gov’t checks by November 2012. The unemployment figures drop as those who have been unemployed for longer than the entitlement period (I believe currently 26 weeks) are no longer on the roles.
I don’t advocate changing the way it is measured, as it smacks of changing the measurement system to make a political point.
However, in these circumstances, I think it better to use employment figures, not unemployment figures.

The most vociferous of them all-a card carrying CPUSA member, hater of all internal combustion engines (except when he would go to Wales for his annual holiday), and owner of three electric cars finally found himself a job after 9 months. The irony of it is that the job is located well outside the range of all of his electric cars so he now has to buy a car that can get him there and after being unemployed for nine months he certainly can not afford a hybrid, so he has to buy an EVIL gasoline/diesel powered one.

Boy, you have to be ideologically blind to think that the source of employment: businesses, are going to hire in these politically uncertain times: cap and trade, mandated healthcare, unavoidably higher taxes (at this spend rate), attacks on property rights and contract abrogation (GM and unions), etc.

Take your economic security in your own hands and don’t look to the government for help because in doing so you lock yourself into “their” myopic solution: waiting around in your particular job challenged geographic area. Pack you bags and head to where unemployment is low. Believe it or not, there are a number of metropolitan areas with less than 5%, which is pretty much a guarantee of a job in a reasonable period of time.
Look at the stats and deliver yourself!!!! Be American, vote with your feet just like your forefathers.
