  13. Normal winter weather for January ‘cept fer the deep south. What’s the problem?

Oh, wait. The global warming ‘signature’ is like, two tenths of a degree change in the global average and the error rate for the instruments used, and the methodology used to measure temperature is an order of magnitude (or ten) larger than the signal they’re looking for.

Factor in some confusion over what variable the proxy methods are really detecting, and the uncertainty factor goes off the chart, but who cares as long as the proles will buy the story.

  14. I live north of Denver, not in the mountains. It is minus 8, with another 3-5 inches of snow on ground yesterday. That was on top of snow that did not melt from last time. Which was on snow from previous time that did not melt. Enough!

WANTED: Global Warmist and tree hunging types

EXPERIMENT: See how long these yahoos are willing to stand outside today on the principle that Global Warming is settled science

Here’s an article you will want to read that is in the Omaha World-Herald this morning entitled, “A Persistent Polar Pattern”.

    A couple highlights:

A little-understood Arctic phenomenon may be behind the worst winter conditions in a quarter-century across much of the United States, near record lows in Omaha and misery from northern Europe to Asia.

There is more snow on the ground, 21 inches, than in any January since 1948 — the earliest date for which reliable snow records are available.

The average temperature in Omaha for the first five days of the year has been 3.1 degrees, the third-lowest on record dating to the late 1800s.

And on Friday, Omaha’s daytime high isn’t expected to climb above zero. That hasn’t happened since 1997, said Ken Dewey, an applied climatologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s School of Natural Resources.

But as bad as the Midlands weather has been, the southern United States might be faring worse because that region is less accustomed to the cold, said Eric Wilhelm, a meteorologist for AccuWeather Inc., The World-Herald’s consultant.

The Arctic Oscillation involves atmospheric circulation over the polar region, and its intensity is the strongest in decades, meteorologists say.

And then let me throw this last one at you: “Michelle L’Heureux, a meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, said the Arctic Oscillation is one of the least understood weather patterns and is difficult to predict.”

Really? In 2010, we can not predict the weather? Hmmm, could it be that Global Warming ISN’T settled science after all?

    Say it ain’t so Al . . .

  22. The winter of my youth has returned.

Just as an entire generation has grown up not knowing what a vinyl “record” is, that same group of teen, twenty and thirty-somethings have no clue of what it is like to live with actual winter…

…not seeing the ground from November to March.
…getting up an hour early every morning to shovel the driveway to be able to drive to work or school.
…never having school or work called unless it snows at least a full twelve inches. (Ten won’t do it.)
…dodging stalagtite-sized icicles that hang (and fall) dangerously from every roof.
…having only ONE indian summer, or break in the bitter cold, sometime in February.
…not seeing the sun or the blue sky for weeks on end.
…just dealing with the cold and the snow and the gloom, week after week, month after month, knowing that next year is going to be no different.

That’s the winter I knew and loved/hated. And it’s back.

  23. Denying either warming OR cooling is foolish. Ample evidence exists to support the ocurrence of both, over long periods of time.

To posit that a single species can have a material effect on climate(except in extremely LOCAL circumstances) is displaying monumental arrogance.

Sorta makes all the flap a bit moot.

  24. Cold fronts aren’t unusual in Florida but this snap has lasted an unusually long time. When I lived in Miami for several years, the cold weather would last only a few days. This has gone on for more than a week.

  31. So the earth’s climate is a huge SYSTEM. It’s COMPLEX and has lots of different parts. Climate scientists don’t claim that it will get hotter everywhere because THAT’S DUMB AND DOESN’T MAKE SENSE. They claim that as the OVERALL temperature increases, there will be lots of problems like SEVERE WEATHER. Including UNUSUAL COLD or DROUGHT or an UNUSUALLY LARGE NUMBER OF HURRICANES. The climate SYSTEM becomes less stable because it is CHANGING QUICKLY due to HUMAN ACTIVITY, which causes lots of different problems ALL OVER THE WORLD. Have you ever heard of a SYSTEM? or COMPLEXITY?

  32. Live in that North Eastern section of Arizona showing 17 degrees. I teach 2 weekly elective science labs at a nearby middle school. The students have been collecting temperature data since early October. The low temperatures have been averaging 10 degrees below long term daily averages. I love Global Warming.

  33. I see most of you still haven’t learned the difference between climate and weather (judging by the comments you seem to believe they’re synonymous). Well, no worry. Just because you don’t understand the difference doesn’t mean that other, smarter, people don’t.

  34. Ye gods, you people. You’re being trounced intellectually by someone with the username “uhhh??” I sure hope this is an elaborate joke blog or something.

don’t do either, try research to back up your opinion..

do we have a pollution problem??

    yes..

    does it cause Global Warming??

    no..

    does man cause pollution??

    yes..

    does man cause Global Warming??

    no..

how much does man (et al) contribute to Global Warming??

humans cause only 3.4 percent of annual CO2 emissions

[Perhaps the most alarming part is the price tag associated with attempting to reduce such a small part of the atmosphere and something we really cannot control. Our analysis shows the cumulative GDP losses for 2010 to 2029 approach $7 trillion. Single-year losses exceed $600 billion in 2029, more than $5,000 per house¬hold. Job losses are expected to exceed 800,000 in some years, and exceed at least 500,000 from 2015 through 2026. It is important to note that these are net job losses, after any jobs created by compliance with the regulations–so-called green jobs–are taken into account. In total, the “climate revenue” (read: energy tax) could approach two trillion over eight years. Keep in mind, this is all for negligible environmental benefits.

The science behind global warming is anything but conclusive. Many leading climatologists conclude that climate models aren’t incredibly accurate and even have different opinions (for instance whether it is the sun or oceanic changes) as to what the dominant causes are of global warming and cooling.

    [..]

“There’s a much more important issue that poses an even greater danger to mankind. That’s the effort by environmentalists to suppress disagreement with their view. According to a March 11 article in London’s Sunday Telegraph, Timothy Ball, a former climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg in Canada, has received five death threats since he started questioning whether man was affecting climate change. Richard Lindzen, professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT, said, “Scientists who dissent from the alarmism have seen their funds disappear, their work derided, and themselves labeled as industry stooges.” Nigel Calder, a former editor of New Scientist, said, “Governments are trying to achieve unanimity by stifling any scientist who disagrees. Einstein could not have got funding under the present system.”

Suppressing dissent is nothing new. Italian cosmologist Giordano Bruno taught that stars were at different distances from each other surrounded by limitless territory. He was imprisoned in 1592, and eight years later he was tried as a heretic and burned at the stake. Because he disagreed that the Earth was the center of the universe, Galileo was ordered to stand trial on suspicion of heresy in 1633. Under the threat of torture, he recanted and was placed under house arrest for the rest of his life.”]

It is about 0.28%, if water vapor is
taken into account– about 5.53%, if not.

much lower than our current unemployment rate, go figure..

  61. Global warming causes the deep freeze. Forget about the politics and do your homework. The melting fresh water flowing south from the artic the warming Gulf stream southward pulling the jet stream along with it causing frigid temps. I don’t believe it’s man made but it is happening very very few experts fdispute that. For decades it was said as the Gulf stream sinks further south, England would be the first to feel it affects, followed by the northeast in the U.S. The Brits are now buying and burning books as a cheap way to stay warm in thier second year of rare snow and record lows.

  62. It’s still 23 in Anchorage, Alaska – about 10 degrees too warm for this time of year.

  63. It is honestly shocking to read so many comments that basically say “It’s cold where I live this winter! Global Warming must be a hoax! QED!”

Guys, climate change is about global averages. This is just not that complicated. Variance in excess of the trend is not only possible, it’s anticipated. So could we not have this absurd comedy every winter?

As for the actual scientific consensus, it’s apparent to everyone not afflicted by an ideological inability to look. Your 141 “scientists” are bought and paid for by carbon-intensive industry. It’s really well documented. In fact, maybe the most laughable part of this issue recently has been the popular explanation for the “hoax” of warming: that it’s all being pushed by clean-energy interests. Do people who claim this ever stop to think about the fact that the dirty-energy interests have orders of magnitude more money and are very obviously spending tons to “debunk” climate change?

Also, I did want to directly address “bg,” who has the happy distinction of being the only denier to actually provide something resembling evidence. Unfortunately, the NCPA isn’t exactly a neutral source…at all. It’s a rightwing think tank, not a scientific organization; they can be trusted to find a way to make the data support conservative ideology. However, you should also note this line in that very same study:

“CO2 levels have been fairly constant for the last 10,000 years. Largely due to human activities, including the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, CO2 levels have risen approximately 35 percent since the beginning of the industrial revolution, with more than 80 percent of that rise occurring since 1950.”

Even NCPA says we’re responsible for our CO2 increases. And elsewhere in the study they admit that those increases are the major cause of current warming. That should tell you something.
