It’s all Bush’s fault.
Obama blames Gitmo for the creation of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

The BBC reported, via Free Republic:
US President Barack Obama has said a Yemen-linked plot to bomb an airliner will not prevent the closure of the US prison at Guantanamo Bay.
The US has suspended the repatriation of Yemeni prisoners held there in the wake of the plot, claimed by a Yemen-based al-Qaeda offshoot.
Nearly half of those remaining at the detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, are from Yemen…
“It was always our intent to transfer detainees to other countries only under conditions that provide assurances that our security is being protected,” Mr Obama said on Tuesday, during a briefing on security reviews ordered after the airliner plot.
“With respect to Yemen in particular, there’s an ongoing security situation which we have been confronting for some time, along with our Yemeni partner.”
But Mr Obama said the camp would still be shut, “in a manner that keeps the American people safe and secure”.
“Make no mistake, we will close Guantanamo prison, which has damaged our national security interests and become a tremendous recruiting tool for al-Qaeda,” he said.
“In fact, that was an explicit rationale for the formation of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.“
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula first came to prominence in Saudi Arabia in May 2003. There is absolutely no proof that Gitmo had anything to do with the group’s formation. The first operational leader of AQAP was killed in June 2003.

Obama is just plain weird. He thinks people actually buy his lies.
So I assume that means that 9/11 was caused because the Jihadis knew Bush would open GITMO? Or the bombing of the USS Cole. or any of the other terror attacks of the 80s and 90s … Lockerbie Pan Am Flight 103 …
Just plain weird how he thinks isn’t it. I say it’s caused by radical Islam.
jim m commented:
Barry doesn’t believe a word of what he says. If he did he’d be putting his money where his mouth is and releasing those prisoners. If holding them is the single biggest recruiting tool for al Qaida, then releasing them would necessarily be a severe blow o their efforts.
Of course Barry knows that Gitmo has nothing to do with islamic fascist recruiting. That’s why he’s going o hold on to these scumbags.
But it really is too perfect: The only thing more dangerous than al qaida recruiting more terrorists is the group that we already hold at Gitmo. In one fell swoop Barry manages to show that every word he has spoken about the war on terror and Gitmo is a lie and that he knows it is all a lie.

There is an ever-widening gulf between reality and perception with this administration. They all come from the land of make believe, always trying to control media messaging. But the problem with reality is that it just IS. Gravity is. The Earth is round. Saying otherwise doesn’t change reality. Sorry to burst your bubble liberals. al Qaida’s origins are rooted in the Arabian Peninsula. GITMO has zero to do with that. And suggesting…again…that in order to stop terrorism we need to stop doing things that might offend terrorists is just plain stupid. Hey, three more years!! Countdown has begun.

I’m still closing Gitmo By Yemeni! Sorry had to be said by someone.
These conflicts have been going on since Old Testament days between the various tribes.
In modern history the US backed Osama Bin Laden when he was fighting the Russians in Afghanistan. When the Russians pulled out the US dropped support to Osama Bin Laden who wanted to go on to bigger conquests. That is when he declared war against us. When he turned on us we should have taken him out.
Not making any judgments whether it was right or wrong just want to point out what we all know is that blaming Gitmo for terrorism is foolish if not idiotic.

Barack Hussein Obama has never had America’s interests at heart. His soul is not an American soul. His understanding of history is flawed and his appreciation of what America is has been blemished by Reverend Wright and others he reveres.

Islamic Army of Aden (Yemen)
Description
The Islamic Army of Aden (IAA) emerged publicly in mid-1998 when the group released a series of communiques that expressed support for Usama Bin Ladin, appealed for the overthrow of the Yemeni Government, and called for operations against US and other Western interests in Yemen. Designated under EO 13224 in September 2001.
Activities
Engages in bombings and kidnappings to promote its goals. The group reportedly was behind an attack in June 2003 against a medical assistance convoy in the Abyan Governorate. Yemeni authorities responded with a raid on a suspected IAA facility, killing several individuals and capturing others, including Khalid al-Nabi al-Yazidi, the groups leader.
Before that attack, the group had not conducted operations since the bombing of the British Embassy in Sanaa in October 2000. In 2001, Sanaa found an IAA member and three associates responsible for that attack. In December 1998, the group kidnapped 16 British, American, and Australian tourists near Mudiyah in southern Yemen.]
In the Spotlight: The Islamic Army of Aden (IAA)
[The IAA is most famous for its role in the Oct. 12, 2000, bombing of the USS Cole in Aden Harbor. A dinghy packed with explosives ran into the side of the destroyer while it was refueling, killing 17 American sailors and injuring 39 others. Intelligence services suspect the attack was sponsored by and conducted in coordination with al-Qaida. Abd al-Rashim al-Nashiri, chief of Qaida operations in the Persian Gulf, is believed to have masterminded the attack. Ali Qaed Senyan al-Harthi, al-Qaida’s chief operative in Yemen, is also thought to have been involved. Authorities believe Al-Harthi was killed in November 2002, when an American unmanned aerial vehicle fired a hellfire missile at a car in the middle of the Yemeni desert.
Authorities suspect the IAA receives financial and material support from al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in exchange for public support of al-Qaida’s agenda. The IAA was designated a terrorist financier on Sept. 24, 2001, when U.S. President George W. Bush launched the financial component of the so-called war on terrorism. On April 19, 2002, the U.S. Treasury Department froze the assets of Abu Hamza al-Masri, the IAA’s chief legal officer, citing IAA involvement in the bombing of the USS Cole, the 1998 kidnapping of foreign tourists, and support for Osama bin Laden.]
Islamic Army of Aden
[1996-1997 and After:
Bin Laden’s Brother-in-Law Khalifa Said to
Fund Al-Qaeda Linked Group in Yemen
Osama bin Laden’s brother-in-law, Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, helps fund a militant group in Yemen that will later take credit for the 2000 USS Cole bombing. The group, the Islamic Army of Aden, is apparently formed in 1996 or 1997, but is not heard from until May 1998, when it issues the first of a series of political statements. The group will kidnap 16 mainly British tourists in December 1998 and four of the tourists will be killed during a shootout with police. The remaining hostages are rescued. [Yemen Gateway, 1/1999] Evidence ties Khalifa to the 1995 Bojinka plot and other violent acts, though he has denied all allegations that he is linked to terrorist groups. Vincent Cannistraro, former head of the CIA’s Counterterrorist Center, later claims that not only did Khalifa fund the Islamic Army of Aden, but that 9/11 hijacker Khalid Almihdhar had ties to the group as well. (A San Diego friend of Almihdhar’s will later say that Almihdhar told him he was a member of the group (see Around October 12, 2000).) [Wall Street Journal, 9/19/2001] Cannistraro further notes that Khalifa went on to form the group after being deported from the US in 1995. “He should never have been allowed to leave US custody.” [San Francisco Chronicle, 10/24/2001] The group praises bin Laden and uses a training camp reportedly established by him in southern Yemen. But the group is more clearly tied to Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Masri, a handless, one-eyed Afghan war veteran living and preaching openly in London.]

Here’s what your link said, in the FIRST LINE:
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) was formed in January 2009 by a merger between two regional offshoots of the international Islamist militant network in neighbouring Yemen and Saudi Arabia
Can you explain this confusion?

I wish people would stop repeating the canard that the US backed Bin Laden in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation. The US backed the Afghan mujahideen. Bin Laden was part of a separate non-Afghan Arab group known as Maktab al-Khidamat that event the mujahideen distrusted.
ice9 commented:
YOUR LINK continued:
this BBC story does include the bit you quoted:
“Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula first came to prominence in Saudi Arabia in May 2003.” Saudi Arabia is in the Arabian Peninsula. But it is not in Yemen. The story is about Yemenis in Yemen.
The caption of the photo describes the “Saudi branch” of al Qaeda. Therefore it seems reasonable to conclude that your citation fails to prove your point, and the story cited in fact proves the opposite point, and that the president’s claim stands and is in fact strengthened by the evidence you offer to refute it.
More confusion?
You claim it’s “crazy talk,” yet the link YOU POSTED includes these paragraphs, which establish that two of the key officers of the organization were released from Guantanamo during the Bush administration. (which you have not to my knowledge denied.) A legalistic and nitpicking reading of the story might conclude that these paragraphs do not perfectly support the president’s claim, but they substantially support it:
Next to Wuhayshi and Raymi in the same video sat the new group’s deputy leader, Said Ali al-Shihri, a Saudi national who was released from the US military detention centre at Guantanamo Bay in November 2007.
Another former detainee, Mohammed Atiq al-Harbi, also known as Mohammed al-Awfi, appeared alongside them and was described as a field commander.
Embarrassingly for both Riyadh and Washington, both men had been released from Guantanamo into the custody of the Saudi government’s “deradicalisation” programme for militants, which includes art therapy. They both left the facility within weeks.
Clearly your commenters are satisfied by this level of argument, since they only want another chance to write down unflattering things about stuff they don’t understand and a president they loathe for no logical reason. But you claim some integrity. So perhaps an explanation is in order.

Is it relevant that the MAK had offices in the US during the Afghan-soviet war? Is it relevant that several CIA officers have admitted that they met bin Laden during that period? That the MAK fighters were typically integrated into afghan muj organizations rather than fighting as separate units (though they did that also)? How do you define ‘backed”? (I think we know how you define ‘canard’–’a thing I want to hide.’) “backed” in a war typically means supported one side or the other. bin Laden was on the side of the muj, and not on the soviet side, and the US backed the muj, so the US backed bin Laden. Anything else is, if you’ll excuse the expression, tortured reasoning at best (though the worst–parroted wingnut talking points–is far more likely.)

Obama has already released & dismissed charges against some the most notorious detainees, add moving the KSM et al trials to NYC, now add this on top of that & you can clearly see Obama’s stealth what i’ll dub “Operation GITMO” for now..
ht Joanne in a previous thread..
“Operation GITMO”
[Back in the early summer, I wrote about how, even as the Iranian regime continued killing American troops, the Obama administration had engaged in shameful negotiations with an Iran-backed terror network (the League of the Righteous) in Iraq — negotiations that resulted in the release of Laith Qazali, one of the terrorists responsible for the murders of five American soldiers in Karbala, in exchange for the remains of two British hostages.
Shortly thereafter, the Obama administration released the "Irbil Five," commanders from the Iranian IRGC's elite "Quds Force" who had been captured by our military after coordinating terrorist attacks in Iraq that have killed hundreds of American soldiers and Marines.
Today, New Year's Eve, while everyone's attention is understandably on family and friends, we learn (thanks to the ever alert Bill Roggio, reporting on the Standard's blog) that the administration has now released Qais Qazali, Laith's brother, who is the head of the Iran-backed terror network, in addition to a hundred other terrorists. In violation of the long-standing, commonsense policy against capitulating to kidnappers and terrorists because it just encourages more hostage-taking and murder, the terrorists were released in exchange for a British hostage and the remains of his three contract guards (whom the terrorists had murdered).]
btw..
Iran’s al Qaeda connection in Yemen
[The attempted Christmas Day underwear bombing of Northwest Flight 253 may have Iranian fingerprints, but those are dots the Obama administration doesn't want to connect.
[..]
Al Qaeda’s interests are obvious. At his confirmation hearing in May, Mr. Feltman said that the United States is “deploying new approaches to the threat posed by Iran with our eyes wide open and with no illusions.” The Obama team might want to open their eyes a little wider.]
that’s a freakin’ understatement if there ever was one, gah!!

about as relevant even if your statement
if true (you’ve proffered no zippo proof)..
bin Laden was not al-Qaeda at the time..
re: [US backed the muj, so the US backed bin Laden]
‘NOT DIRECTLY”
again i must reiterate, bin Laden was not al-Qaeda at the time..
at any rate, and aside from your projecting a false dichotomy..
bin Laden always denied being “backed by the US”..
Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri says much the same
thing in his book Knights Under the Prophet’s Banner.
Bin Laden himself has said “the collapse of the Soviet Union … goes to God and the mujahideen in Afghanistan … the US had no mentionable role,” but “collapse made the US more haughty and arrogant.”
According to CNN journalist Peter Bergen, known for conducting
the first television interview with Osama bin Laden in 1997,
The story about bin Laden and the CIA — that the CIA funded bin Laden or trained bin Laden — is simply a folk myth. There’s no evidence of this. In fact, there are very few things that bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and the U.S. government agree on. They all agree that they didn’t have a relationship in the 1980s. And they wouldn’t have needed to. Bin Laden had his own money, he was anti-American and he was operating secretly and independently. The real story here is the CIA did not understand who Osama was until 1996, when they set up a unit to really start tracking him.
Bergen quotes Pakistani Brigadier Mohammad Yousaf, who ran the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Afghan operation between 1983 and 1987:
It was always galling to the Americans, and I can understand their point of view, that although they paid the piper they could not call the tune. The CIA supported the mujahideen by spending the taxpayers’ money, billions of dollars of it over the years, on buying arms, ammunition, and equipment. It was their secret arms procurement branch that was kept busy. It was, however, a cardinal rule of Pakistan’s policy that no Americans ever become involved with the distribution of funds or arms once they arrived in the country. No Americans ever trained or had direct contact with the mujahideen, and no American official ever went inside Afghanistan.
sort of like my sending a package of mixed goodies to the grandkids, who gets what i’ve no clue, unless they tell me of course.. hmm hmm hmm

Al-Qaeda (pronounced /ælˈkaɪdə/ or /ælˈkeɪdə/; Arabic: القاعدة, al-qāʿidah, “the base”), alternatively spelled al-Qaida and sometimes al-Qa’ida, is an Islamist group founded sometime between August 1988[5] and late 1989/early 1990.[6] It operates as a network comprising both a multinational, stateless arm[7] and a fundamentalist Sunni movement calling for global jihad.
Osama bin Laden explained the origin of the term ‘al-Qaeda’ in a videotaped interview with Al Jazeera journalist Tayseer Alouni in October 2001:
The name ‘al-Qaeda’ was established a long time ago by mere chance. The late Abu Ebeida El-Banashiri established the training camps for our mujahedeen against Russia’s terrorism. We used to call the training camp al-Qaeda. The name stayed.

thanks & btw al Qeada was spawned by The Muslim Brotherhood..
AQ (et al) is the external militaristic army for the MB‘s internal academic brains so to speak (and much more.. *sigh*)..
The Muslim Brotherhood, Nazis and Al-Qaeda
Hitler & the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem
(ipso facto: the Mufti was Arafat‘s, aka: Husseini, Uncle)
btw, the MB has deployed the same strategy right here in the US, the MB has been here working on their stealth infiltration project for a minimum of 2 decades, perhaps even 3 or 4 for all literally we know..
Banna Nazi
one example of many more (just google TMB Project ; Ikhwan, etc..

[And here, as a bitter clinger, I always thought Al-Quada was formed as
a tool to implement Allah’s will to kill infidels. I didn’t know until you just now pointed it out that they would not exist if Gitmo didn’t exist! ]
THUMBSUP!!

ironic how more & more Muslims are also recognizing the fact that Obama is undermining the GWOT, and they don’t like it one iota (but then again, they’re not Shariah lovin’ Islamists like Obama’s commie cuz Odinga)..
excellent & informative reads, i sincerely hope
you do read them & find out for yoursleves..

Another season of silly is upon us. Caught ME expert Pam Falk of Hunter College on very early morning CBS. (She’s the only hired pundit anywhere who has credibility with me.) She interviewed an official of Yemen who said that it’s true enough that Undie Bomber was trained in Yemen, but continued to say that the support he had for his Christmas Day plane trip came from elsewhere, as in Pakistan. Believe, but have not verified that this interview is posted at CBS.

Gosh, and here I thought the whole point of al Qaeda was to wage violent offensive jihad to establish pure islam and to cleanse the world, and especially the Arabian peninsula, of infidels and apostates!*
How wrong I was.
*In precise accordance with Mohammad’s instructions, btw. But apparently that was just a coincidence.

To all B.O. supporters on this board who feel the need to impart their wisdom, the USS Cole was attacked in Yemini port during the administration of Bill Clinton.

first to deal with the issue of the “law professor” – I think it is total BS to call a mere lecturer who works part-time a professor. That role is for a tenured position. He was not tenured. I never believe anything from factcheck.com because they just make things up without providing real proof.
Now let’s deal with the rest of the post. The idiot residing in the White House does not have a clue about anything. His idea of history is totally distorted. From what I can see AQ came into existence after the Russian-Afghan war. Either way, there has always been a connection to Yemen and Yemen is not a new front.
What the idiot moron residing in the White House fails to recognize or understand is that the Taliban were sheltering OBL at the time of the strike on the WTC. What the moron fails to appreciate is that OBL and AQ were behind the first strike on the WTC way back in the 1990s. Then there is the issue of the USS Cole as well as a string of other bombings.
Just in case there are people here who have not connected the dots, I remind them that Abu Bakir Bashir, the imam behind the formation of Jamaah Islamiyaah in Indonesia and the Phillipinnes (sp) is from Yemen. Can you see the connection?
Yemen is the perfect base for AQ and its war against Saudi Arabia. Yes, get that AQ has been very active in Saudi Arabia over a period of years. The AQ in Saudi Arabia did not suddenly flee to Yemen, they have been using Yemen as their base from the very beginning.
What I do not understand is why Yemen was overlooked for so long as a stronghold for AQ when it has been obvious for a very long time that there is a link….. like how the Gitmo ex-detainees end up in Yemen from SA, and how there are so many GITMO detainees that come from Yemen.
The real link has always been Yemen, not Saudi Arabia.
OBL wants to gain control of Saudi Arabia.

Is Obama just a liar, or is stupid and a liar? Perhaps someone should remind him about the USS Cole, or the embassy attacks in Riyadh. Does he think WE are all so stupid that we’d believe that Gitmo had anything to do with Al-Qaeda in Arabia?
