Sarah Palin congratulated Barack Obama for finally deciding to send reinforcements to Afghanistan.
From hre Facebook page:

Three months ago, I joined a number of Americans in urging President Obama to provide the resources necessary to achieve our goals in Afghanistan. Tonight, I am glad he mostly heeded that advice.

At long last, President Obama decided to give his military commanders much of what they need to accomplish their mission in Afghanistan. In the end, he decided to endorse a “surge” for Afghanistan, applying the counterinsurgency principles of “clear, hold and build” that worked so well in Iraq. Given that he opposed the surge in Iraq, it is even more welcome that he now supports a surge in Afghanistan.

This approach means, as Senator John McCain has noted, that “We now have an opportunity to build a bipartisan consensus in support of a vital national security priority: defeating Al-Qaeda and its violent extremist allies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and ensuring that these countries never again serve as bases for terrorist attacks against America and our allies.”

We should be clear, however, that fewer troops mean assuming more risk. Talk of an exit date also risks sending the wrong message. We should be in Afghanistan to win, not to set a timetable for withdrawal that signals a lack of resolve to our friends, and lets our enemies believe they can wait us out.

  1. ya, but he clearly didn’t want to!

  2. Check out the Rules Of Engagement:

    *No night or surprise searches.

*Villagers have to be warned prior to searches.

*ANA or ANP must accompany U.S. units on searches.

*U.S. soldiers may not fire at the enemy unless the enemy is preparing to
    fire first.

*U.S. forces cannot engage the enemy if civilians are present.

    *Only women can search women.

*Troops can fire at an insurgent if they catch him placing an IED but not if
insurgents are walking away from an area where explosives have been laid.

Political Analysis: Obama’s Revealing Afghanistan Strategy

    http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2009/12/political-analysis-obamas-revealing-afghanistan-strategy.html

  3. Good one, Sarah. Obama’s troop increase was predictable, a little short of his General’s advice because, uh, O is a cat who has to mark his territory. He sat on his hands for months wanting us to believe he was strategizing.

Great strategy–go on TV and announce the next phase and end game.

Biden (remember him-3 letters, J-O-B-S!) is today’s story with his lecture to Hamid Karzai on how this whole thing is gonna wind down.

How much longer can we tolerate these pantloads?
    ………………………….

  4. There is a level of civilian and military (American) deaths this administration is comfortable with.
    i.e. healthcare death panels.

  5. Sarah is stalking her prey. He will stumble , and she will get him. It will only be a matter of time.

  6. He did heed some of her advice in that he sending some troops in for a surge. I would take his intentions with some seriousness if he would name our enemies for what they are…terrorists.

Until he does, we cannot win. Heck, TERRORISM is what happened at Ft. Hood. I don’t care if it was only one terrorist, it was still terrorism undertaken by a terrorist.

And I don’t need an Ivy League education to see and state the truth.

  7. This (surge) is a complete sham.

The troops will only be ‘in action’ for a year and then he’s pulling them out. How the hell can you ‘do an Iraq’ in Afgoofystan in a year??!!??

Of course, the withdrawal date is red meat for his looney toons base just before the next presidential election. Much like the next trillion dollar tranch of vote purchases Nazi Pelosi and Dingy Harry are trying to set up for this election year.

Like another guy said: “We can no longer laugh at France.”

  8. The misquote in the blog post’s title (“…he mostly heeded my advice”) presents Palin as being as full of herself as the Narcissist In Chief is of himself.

  9. When you have an announced “withdrawal” date, and the restrictive Rules of Engagement (thanks, Chisum), I am starting to view this as COMPLETE political folly, and not worth asking our troops to risk their lives and freedom.

The politicians have COMPLETE protection, risking only a trifling bit of political criticism, whereas the troops risk danger abroad and then prosecution at home.

This is criminal hypocrisy by the political class. Why do we have to bow and scrape regarding Afghanistan when we are still in Europe after 60 years, or Korea after 50?

  10. The politicians have COMPLETE protection, risking only a trifling bit of political criticism, whereas the troops risk danger abroad and then prosecution at home.

That includes the military command, which by cooperation is negligent in performing their sacred obligation of protecting their troops.

I disagree with the half-baked concept that allowing our troops to suffer so that collateral damage is limited will help them in the long run. A better and more honorable tactic would be for the top eschelons to personally battle propaganda abroad and also at home. They could and should counter specific instances of propaganda with pointed rebuttal, rather than hiding behind their cherished political correctness.

  11. I think I’m one of the few on the right that actually thinks we should not be putting more troops into Afghanistan. I think we should actually be drawing down, and moving to a policy of containment, honestly. I’ve had multiple family members serve in Iraq (both times) and Afghanistan. The two are not the same, not even remotely. The troop surge worked in Iraq b/c they had alot more going for them than Afghanistan which is a completely failed state.

    Iraq had:

    1) plumbing, electricity, and communications infrastructure that allow a centralized gov’t and police the ability to control crime. Furthermore, the creature comforts help pacify the population.

    2) an educated populace that understands the benefits of a functional government and realizes that govt is essential to participation in world affairs.

    3) a population that was accustomed to a centralized government (as opposed to neighbor vs neighbor in Afghanistan).

    4) secular roots that should help mitigate the effect of overly radical religious parties.

We are talking about people that have never been able to trust a government. They never really trusted the Taliban, but were bullied. They don’t trust the gov’t they have now, nor should they after the rigged elections. They are used to fighting every day just to survive or protect their fields/livestock/families/etc. It will take decades for them to ever trust any authority figure unless they do so at gunpoint.

I say, pull out. Keep CIA agents active in the region, and bomb AQ strongholds as they spring up.

    Just my 2 cents

  12. How did you expect the Jihadist-In Chief to react? Of course he will tie the hands of our sons and daughters- our CHILDREN- so he can please his Arab Masters and save face for the money machine of the Progressives.

I hope everyone who voted this demon into office someday gets on their KNEES and apologizes to REAL AMERICANS who actually have no problem DYING to keep our way of life.

  13. Perhaps those who are critical of him outlining a pull out timeframe by 2011 should be more clear on what they want. Would you rather he suggest a 5 year plan? 10 years?

Afghanistan has always (and will continue to be) an inept, corrupt, failed state, no matter how long you hold their hands. In the meantime, it’s a black hole of money and resources.

Whatever credibility Palin temporarily had is long gone. She has no grasp of any issue beyond being a hockey mom.

  14. If the following doesn’t digest we have lost the war on terror anyway. (Not to discredit our military’s fighting capabilities). We need to bring Islm them to their knees, send them a message they will never forget and contain them and/or get them out of our country; if it isn’t too late.

Koranic commands to engage in warfare are universal and are to continue until Islam is the only religion. Examples include: “Make war on them until idolatry does not exist any longer and Allah’s religion reigns universally” (8:39). “Kill the unbelievers wherever ye find them, capture and besiege them and prepare for them every kind of ambush” (9:5). “Fight against them! Allah shall punish them, at your hands and give you victory over them…” (9:14). “Wage war on the people of the Book, who … do not accept the religion of Islam” (9:29). “Fight the unbelievers in your surroundings, and let them find harshness in you” (9:123). “Those who follow Muhammad are merciless for the unbelievers but kind to each other” (48:29). “Truly Allah loves those who fight in His cause in battle array… ” (61:4).

  15. It is a mistake to announce your strategic military plans to the world (so they can quickly plan an offensive) just to gain political “points”.

Obama seems to be in the game of politics, not president of our great country.

At least Sarah Palin is pro-America and not just apologizing for the supposed wrongs of our country. I find it refreshing.

  16. Are we giving Palin points for being “at least” something now? “At least” Sarah Palin gets up in the morning? “At least” the sun manages to rise every day?

Her nomination as VP candidate by the GOP was an awesome display of short sighted political maneuvering. Compliment McCain’s votes with those enamored by an attractive, conservative “rebel.” Can you imagine the country being lead by her??? You betcha?

I agree with Nick’s earlier assessment of what to do. The country has bigger problems to invest in than Afghanistan. Try education & competing in an increasingly “flat” world.

  17. I worry that there will be another 30,000 troops in harms’ way with a President who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about their lives. Things better change on the battlefield in favour of protecting the lives of the U.S. men and women first and foremost.

  18. Notice that it did not take Sarah three months to figure out what to do. Notice also the clear suscinct message she sends without backbiting. This is a woman that leads with clear decisive actions. She keeps on hitting the ball out of the park. I sure hope she runs for President in 2012. America and the world need her wisdom.

  19. The contrasts are instructive, we had September 11th and the president mobilized forces almost immediately against AQ. Now eight years later, we had a failed London or Madrid level plot, coming from that same source and the President takes three months just to make a decision.

In answer to the second question, you don’t telegraph a deadline, you say we will respond according to the conditions on the ground.

  20. Now, now, let’s be clear. She didn’t say “my advice”, but rather she said “that advice”.
