For all of you baby boomers out there who are soon to be seniors– let’s hope you have a wad of cash stashed somewhere because you’re going to need it. Democrats just slashed home health care by $43 billion this past weekend.
The New York Times reported on this latest move by democrats:

By a vote of 53 to 41, the Senate on Saturday rejected a Republican effort to block cutbacks in payments to home health agencies that provide nursing care and therapy to homebound Medicare beneficiaries.

Republicans voted against the cuts, saying they would hurt some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens. Most Democrats supported the cutbacks, saying they would eliminate waste and inefficiency in home care.

The Democrats’ health care bill would reduce projected Medicare spending on home care by $43 billion, or 13 percent, over the next 10 years. The savings would help offset the cost of subsidizing coverage for the uninsured.

Let Freedom Ring has much more on the dem’s Medicare cuts.

  1. Put us on an ice floe, and give us a gallon of Martinis. We’ll sail off into the sunset.

  2. I’ll have to research how Claire McCaskill voted on this one. Her husband is a millionaire nursing home owner. He owns several, so he has a vested interest in home health care.

I believe it has been cheaper to have people receive treatment in their homes as long as possible so they wouldn’t have to go into nursing homes. Could there possibly been bit of conflict of interest here?

But it doesn’t matter anyway, does it? After all, these old people are going to die anyway, so why try to extend the quality of their lives? Let’s just get them into institutions asap. Let’s take away their independence. We all know the government knows better, so let’s give it total control and be done with it.

  3. This is so sad, and the State controlled media, is aiding them in lying to senior citizens. This communist party is evil.

  4. I’m on Medicare and greatly concerned about possible cuts. That said, Home Healthcare is loaded with waste and fraud. My mother-in-law spent the last months of her life with us and received home healthcare. The provider avoided all questions about costs and simply emphasized that we’d never get a bill. “Care” consisted of daily monitoring of vitals and electronic transmission to “somewhere”. Once in a while we would get a call asking if the patient was having a problem. About once a week someone would show up at the house, ask the same question and make a few notes. Nothing was done that we weren’t already doing and when there were issues of concern we contacted the patient’s physician directly. I would love to know how much money is spent on monitoring of basic vitals – I suspect it’s ridiculous.

  5. There is some more dot connecting that needs to be done on this issue. Just recently SEIU was in a big fight with home health care workers who were refusing to be unionized. In addition there is an upstart new union in CA which is challenging SEIU and if I am not mistaken they are also made up of mostly home health care folks.

Not sure if any of that is related, it is just this seemed a strange thing to do, even for the Dems.

  6. There is tons of Medicare fraud and waste but cuttinng funds for home health care won’t touch the problem. In fact cutting creates a bigger problem but these idiots are too stupid to figure that out. Or maybe it creates what they want which is dead people.
It is cheaper to treat people in their homes and hospital stays are as short as possible but this only works if there is home ccare. Without home care you need inpatient stays which are costly or you need to decrease the need. Die baby (oops, granny ) die!

  7. My parents are in their ’70s, and they have home health-care insurance. Regardless of what the gummint does, they have made provision for themselves.

Is it really too much to ask, for people of ordinary and modest means to provide for themselves? If they can do it, the rest of us can, as well, and it will be cheaper to simply pay for it ourselves.

  8. When the cube farms in D. C. reject certain claims, the claims get not only more creative, they add fraudulent claims to offset the cuts. It makes it just more difficult for a honest home car providor.

  9. But, Valerie, if Obummercare is passed, will your parents still have long-term care insurance, or will that go by the wayside?
    .

  10. “The savings cuts would help offset the cost of subsidizing coverage for the uninsured.”

So, there’s not going to be any rationing, right? If it walks like a duck…, etc.

  11. To Just a Grunt:

This action by the dems is ABSOLUTELY RELATED to SEIU desires to unionize health care workers. Home health workers are almost impossible for union thugs to unionize. Even in heavily unionized Illinois, home care workers recently OVERWHELMINGLY REJECTED unionization. The union thugs don’t want granny living in dignity in her home with caring home care workers seeing to her needs — they want granny in a nursing home or assisted living facility, whose workers are much more amenable to organizing efforts by the unions. In this regard, the unions are also on the same side as the nursing home and assisted living facility industries, which view every senior living independently at home as lost business for their elderly warehouses.
