Ultimately, the biggest loser on the Stupak Amendment is the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. The bishops who usually stay quiet due to tax code restrictions on non-profits, endorsed this product when the Stupak Amendment was added.
The bishops have an almost irrational concern over the treatment of (illegal) immigrants, which is why they were willing to endorse once the abortion funding was removed.
Most Catholics will be hearing about the endorsement over the next few weeks. Does anybody really think that the bishops connection with the Catholic community is so tight that they can do a quick about-face when the abortion funding is put back in ? I don’t.
The bishops will look stupid in the end, especially if this thing passes, as many Catholics will think that the Church has changed their position on abortion, a victim of a political “bait-n-switch.”

I wanted CSpan, and the HealthCare debate Friday and Sat. And the republicans had, for the most part, read the bill. The Dems, some admitted they had no time and did not read the bill. It was too long. Republicans are correct. The States are going to be socked with financial commitments because the Feds cannot fund all of the HealthCare programs. This means heavy taxes and depletion of educational funding, and job loss. $Billions and $Billions will need to be footed by the state. The Dems argument is that Rich people may have to mortgage their houses if they cannot pay their medical bills. They want to stop that.

These were all powerful women in important positions, ruling whole nations and partly even fighting on the battlefields. If the Stupek Amendment is not in the final bill if it ever gets to conference, all that is needed is 5 of those people who voted for Stupek to vote “no” this time.
Remember, campaigning starts in January 2010 for the November 2010 elections. Make sure that is known to those 40 who voted for Stupak and the abomination of a bill on Saturday that you are watching.
