University Reviewing Recent Reports on Climate Information
Professor Michael Mann is a highly regarded member of the Penn State faculty conducting research on climate change. Professor Mann’s research papers have been published in well respected peer-reviewed scientific journals.In November 2005, Representative Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) requested that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) convene a panel of independent experts to investigate Professor Mann’s seminal 1999 reconstruction of the global surface temperature over the past 1,000 years. The resulting 2006 report of the NAS panel (http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=11676) concluded that Mann’s results were sound and has been subsequently supported by an array of evidence that includes additional large-scale surface temperature reconstructions.
In recent days a lengthy file of emails has been made public. Some of the questions raised through those emails may have been addressed already by the NAS investigation but others may not have been considered. The University is looking into this matter further, following a well defined policy used in such cases. No public discussion of the matter will occur while the University is reviewing the concerns that have been raised.
This ought to be good.
Will Penn State end this investigation siding with truth and science?…
Or, will Penn State end its investigation siding with Dr. Mann and junk science?

Mann is going to pretend that this means he can’t comment. They’re hoping this will blow over.

As I said on the “Death Knell” thread – Kinda like Charlie Rangel being “investigated” by the House “Ethics” Commitee.

Penn State will do whatever it takes to ensure they still get tax payer money via grants etc. I wonder how much tax payer money is “donated” to Penn State for Mann’s climate change research? How much do they stand to lose if climate change is debunked?

they’ll drag out ‘climate experts’ to pontificate that Mann et al may have gotten incorrect results but that they used scientifically defensible methods. Expect to hear ‘peer review’ a lot, even though the ‘peers’ were cherry picked by Mann and company to be fellow travellers. [*shock*, *surprise*]

Please email Senator Inhofe (R-OK). He has called for an investigation. Encourage him to keep pressing and to include NASA and GISS (James Hansen) in the inquiry. Hansen has refused to release data requested in a formal Freedom Of Information filing. He is equally dirty.l

The Penn State investigation is a whitewash as evidenced by the NAS ‘report’ garbage.
The NAS report, its investigation was moderately critical of the Mann paper and methodology. The official assessment of the NAS hierarchy heads ignored their own investigation’s result and is that which Penn State deceptively calls the ‘report’.

Just that people know about the incentive structure operating on Penn State or any other research university.
On one hand, there is an incentive to stand up for one of your own, and perhaps to not imperil the Climate Science funding source.
On the other hand, there is a strong incentive not to put all of your other research funding in many other areas at risk by not following through on your agreed upon procedures for investigation of allegations of scholarly misconduct.
I had a colleague, well-funded by NSF, who was complaining about all of the bureaucratic hoops he had to go to to “reallocate” funds on his NSF grant. For example, if he didn’t spend his travel budget because he got cheap flights and stayed in cheap hotels for his conference presentations, he wanted to replace some lab equipment, and he needed to generate a lot of paperwork to make this change, even though “NSF doesn’t care.”
I tried explaining that “NSF doesn’t care” because he was getting that funding through a university that had all of this oversight bureaucracy in place. If one tried to get an NSF or NIH grant as “Joe Gentleman-Scientist” not affiliated with a university, you could do that, but the grant would come with a lot more strings from the Federal agency.
